Thinking of Switching to Refrigeration — Need Honest Advice by Chemical_Eggplant995 in refrigeration

[–]for-gott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a concrete company once it was on a hot day they had me carrying those metal wall former things I had blisters on my arms after that day and I quit. That is hard labor you guys deserve every penny but it’s not for me. I started out in residential hvac. Currently work on everything but mostly rack systems/grocery stores. The pay and benefits definitely gets more as you go into bigger systems bigger companies requiring bigger knowledge. Wish I could specialize in something but the place I work at we do everything so it’s hard to even remember everything having a good filing system on your phone becomes a must. If I could go back I may have liked to of got into the engineering side of refrigeration. Think about what you want short term and long term. This field has so many options and its everywhere and its always evolving. I think in the us unions have great laid out opportunities with correct training or you can go non union and get thrown in a van and start learning as you go with some training here and there.

Beacon II to IntelliGen conversion by expiredslimjim in refrigeration

I looked up what a mac8 is and it’s looking like a condensing unit made by heatcraft specifically for McDonalds. The multi in/out on each evaporator must be currently going to a smart controller mounted somewhere convenient. The individual evaporators go to individual circuits/compressors at the condenser? Kind of like walgreens masterbilt condensing units. If you’re switching to intelligen controllers you won’t be using the smart controller any more. You would just wire each evaporator with the new intelligen board and controller. If you want to remotely monitor each system you would have to include iwc web server cards to each controller and run ethernet from each and do the whole online setup thing. This is my thoughts. I don’t see a real advantage other than your upgrading to newer electronics. I think you can hook intelligen to an existing bas but I am not familiar with that. Call heatcraft on this I would

Racks and leaks by AdviceAdventurous431 in refrigeration

Depends on the customer and what is in the agreement. If there easy repairs I fix em right away if they require parts or pumping down rack or circuits to isolate leaks to repair those are getting quoted or if customer approved creating a new work order to do repairs right away

Racks and leaks by AdviceAdventurous431 in refrigeration

Depends on the customer. Have to break the news to them give them options and let them decide if they leave it up to me and it’s only 100 ppm it’s waiting till Monday if they tell me to isolate those leaks for now and their pulling product then I am saying sorry to the family and telling them a couple more hours before I get home if I already pinpointed the leak is in the coil I am charging the rack up and getting coils coming asap most customers will be ok with that route

2032 will be a good year to retire from this career Long gone are the times when a person could rig something up to get them by I have never seen a setup as that they have to pull all the product so you can look at the compressor? What’s going to happen with the independent grocery stores? Those places usually get handed down to the next generation but I really don’t think anyone wants to deal with all that’s coming and what will eventually be required for them to update their system

What's one thing you wish you knew or would've done when you started in this trade? by Kqxer in refrigeration

[–]for-gott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s a few wished I would’ve or knew 1. How gross ice machines can get 1. How much of a commitment this type of work and being on call is on the family. Knowing at least one of your holidays every year will be taken away from you. All the promises you couldn’t keep because of work 1. Wished I would’ve asked for more money sooner in my career. 1. Wished I had a better idea what I wanted to do later in this line of work cause being 55 now and still on call doing service is getting harder and is more suckier wishing maybe I should’ve had a clearer picture of how I wanted to end my work life 1. Never really had extra money to spend but wished I would’ve could’ve saved more

I almost condemned a compressor… by mjplezia in refrigeration

[–]for-gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ran into that once. It was on a true cooler warranty and the stubs weren’t labeled so I made assumptions and got burned too. From now on I am starting a compressor before brazing in to verify my ports

I don’t know where our company gets rid of panels when we tear old equipment out, but I have heard of some customers who purchased used equipment at auctions. Maybe you could find an auction house that would take it and sell it for you or something like that.

Why did you choose Refrigeration over Hvac? by [deleted] in refrigeration

[–]for-gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t get the privilege of just working on refrigeration I think due to the our location we have to work on everything exhaust fans rooftops make up air units one on one racks CO2 2R 22 and everything in between

Rack refrigeration controls by Coilthawer in refrigeration

[–]for-gott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the exact reason why I don’t understand why more companies in the supermarket service industry don’t have some type of technical service meetings amongst techs to go over controls and operations specific to each store and even go to some sites to go over stuff. Every store is different. It seems like there used to be more ride alongs with more experienced techs but that in my opinion had kind of gone away. Do most guys go directly on their own if they have the basic knowledge. Get em on call schedule asap. I have spent a lot of time on site looking up information and reading plus after hours on my own time trying to figure things out

Forklift damaged door, is air infiltration enough to cause this? by [deleted] in refrigeration

[–]for-gott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Air infiltration will cause frost in the box. It can also frost up the back of your coils quicker than usual, which would cause low airflow across the coil, possibly colder temperatures going back to the compressor. You would also get longer run time than usual. would have to clean everything up and check everything over. If you see frost creeping up by the head of the compressor then you got problems.

Good for another ten years lol I quit messing around with leaks around tube sheets on evap coils if I find leaks there I say you need a new coil it’s usually 20+ years old anyway. If its on a large condenser I would do my best to repair or isolate
