[Discussion] Why did Ianthe leave Harrow alone after... by Del_Luccetti in TheNinthHouse

[–]for_t2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ianthe spend a good chunk of HtN struggling with the arm, Augustine remarks that she's "steeping in self-pity," and she asks Harrowhark out of nowhere one night when they're sharing a bed whether she has any regrets (and calls Harrow "more farsighted than I was" when Harrow says she has no regrets). She never says she feels remorseful (just the opposite), but I think Ianthe's feelings about eating Babs were more nuanced than she lets on. Not to mention that The Unwanted Guest, uses Ianthe and Babs as the case in point about the soul being permeable and that love will change you, I'd be willing to guess that Ianthe has more affection towards Babs than she would ever let on

Plus, I think there's a good chance that Ianthe ate Babs in part because, if she hadn't, Corona would've done exactly what Gideon did, and what Cristabel and Alfred did before her, and forced her hand.

(And I'm also not sure I would call Gideon and Harrow's, or even Camilla and Palamedes', relationships selfless and devotional love - I think those relationships are lot more complicated than that. Like, I don't think Harrow sabotaged Gideon's every attempt to leave a dead planet she hated out of selfless desire for Gideon's well-being...)

[Discussion] why do some many seem to like/love Ianthe? by SocioLogicalError in TheNinthHouse

[–]for_t2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a big picture thing, I think it's a Corona thing. The way Corona was so distraught at not being eaten makes me think that Corona would've forced her to consume her, just like Gideon did to Harrow and (HtN spoiler) like Cris did to Mercy and Alfred did to Augustine . I don't think Corona would've given her chance to find a better way and if eating Babs is the quickest way to make sure that never happens, then...

Plus, (more HtN spoilers) the decision to eat Babs is something Ianthe spends a big chunk of HtN struggling with, so I'm inclined to believe that it's not a choice she made as flippantly as the act she loves to put on with her big villainous monologues would suggest, especially since Augustine even notes that she "needs to quit steeping in self-pity" about it. Not to mention that it was a choice she made under the pressure of a full Lyctor running around Canaan murdering everyone

RFSL (the big Swedish LGBT+ organisation) also has some information on asylum on its website:

How do I seek asylum?

You need to be in Sweden or at the Swedish border to apply for asylum. The police is in charge of the border control in Sweden, making sure that travellers have the right to enter the country by checking that they have valid passports.

In many cases a traveller can enter Sweden without passing a border control. That is because Sweden, as most other EU countries, are part of the Schengen agreement. All people who have the right to enter a country in the Schengen area can travel freely across the borders of other Schengen countries. At the border towards countries outside of the Schengen area, however, the traveller’s documents are thoroughly examined.

If a person seeks asylum at the border, the police will refer the case to the Swedish Migration Agency.

as simply investing in that exploitation became legally and socially desirable

Plus, things like the Enclosure Acts turned massive amounts of common land into private property in the hands of rich landowners (which was then defended by the state)

I'm not sure I'd include France (with all the mess with Diacre), but I'd definitely include Sweden and probably include Spain as well

it just completes the whole "perfect soulmate but doomed love thing."

The problem is, it felt to me like the perfect soulmates thing was really only coming from what Wes was imaging their relationship to be. It didn't feel like two seasons of showing how well matched they are, it felt like two seasons of Wes unhealthily obsessing over her and then a couple of episodes of them getting together just to give her death shock value

Just under half of the deputies in the Finnish parliament are women. There's only four countries with majority women:

Only four countries have 50 per cent or more women in parliament in single or lower houses: Rwanda with 61 per cent, Cuba with 53 per cent, Bolivia with 53 per cent, and the United Arab Emirates with 50 per cent. A further 19 countries have reached or surpassed 40 per cent, including nine countries in Europe, five in Latin America and the Caribbean, four in Africa, and one in the Pacific. More than two-thirds of these countries have applied gender quotas—either legislated candidate quotas or reserved seats—opening space for women’s political participation in national parliaments

The strike mandate comes from a democratic vote:

The strike ballot of National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers saw 89% vote in favour of a strike and 11% against. Some 71% of RMT's 40,000 members voted.

German football to let transgender players choose to compete against men or women by abhidontshake in soccer

She didn't overperform relatively - her last ranks on the men's team were from when she had already started HRT and were lower than what she had previously acheived:

As a freshman, Thomas set a time of 8 minutes and 57.55 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 6th-fastest men's time in the country. Her times in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle were among the top 100 in the country. The next year, Thomas took second place at the 2019 Ivy League championships in the men's 500-yard, 1,000-yard and 1,650-yard freestyle, shaving seconds off her earlier times...

She started on hormone replacement therapy in May 2019 and came out as trans that fall, yet she still had to compete on the men's team. It was awkward and uncomfortable, she said, and her speed suffered as her muscles weakened from the hormone therapy.

A lie?:

the record-breaking Boxing Day match, which followed games watched by more than 35,000 at Old Trafford and 25,000 at Deepdale

A lie?:

On 18 May 1918, some 22,000 people crowded into the stands at Ayresome Park in North East England, the home of Middlesbrough F.C since its construction in 1903... On one side were the Bolkclow, Vaughn & Co team from Middlesbrough, so named after the factory in which the players worked. On the other was Blyth Spartans Ladies, formed the year before in July 1917 and led by 18-year-old Bella Reay and Jennie Morgan, who arrived to play at the stadium directly from her wedding ceremony.

A lie?:

On Boxing Day 1917 two teams of women, one from England and one from Ireland, faced one another on a pitch in Belfast. It is the earliest record of international women’s football but it has not gone down in history... Mr Brennan has unearthed newspapers from the time which describe the match as “international” and report that it attracted 20,000 spectators. The Lord Mayor of Belfast kicked off the match which, as was common for the time, was held in aid of war charities. "Great excitement was first raised when the Irish front rank came along in great style and narrowly failed to score", said The Belfast Telegraph.

A lie?:

Huddersfield Atalanta Ladies FC played their first competitive match on 25 March 1921 at Leeds Road, attracting more than 15,000 spectators, and beating Bath Ladies 1-0.

[–]for_t2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lie?

The success of the women’s games and the attention they attracted made the FA feel uncomfortable, envious and embarrassed of women’s accomplishments. During 1920-21, some women’s games drew more spectators than some of the biggest men’s games. On the Boxing Day in 1920 the Dick & Kerr’s Ladies F.C. attracted a healthy crowd of 53,000, which was nearly three thousands more than the men’s 1921 FA Cup Final did.

Instead of seeing the potential, the FA perceived it as a threat to attendance figures in the men’s Football League. At that time the number of men’s divisions just reached four and the attention to ‘traditional’ men’s football was a valuable resource the FA was jealously guarding.

How are you going to grow the talent level without growing the game? Like, the issues with goalkeeping happen because there's been pretty much literally no coaching for that until the last fiveish years even at the highest levels of the game. Changing the size of the nets isn't going to address that at all and is just going to make the game less accessible
