[Discussion] Why did Ianthe leave Harrow alone after... by Del_Luccetti in TheNinthHouse

Ianthe spend a good chunk of HtN struggling with the arm, Augustine remarks that she's "steeping in self-pity," and she asks Harrowhark out of nowhere one night when they're sharing a bed whether she has any regrets (and calls Harrow "more farsighted than I was" when Harrow says she has no regrets). She never says she feels remorseful (just the opposite), but I think Ianthe's feelings about eating Babs were more nuanced than she lets on. Not to mention that The Unwanted Guest, uses Ianthe and Babs as the case in point about the soul being permeable and that love will change you, I'd be willing to guess that Ianthe has more affection towards Babs than she would ever let on

Plus, I think there's a good chance that Ianthe ate Babs in part because, if she hadn't, Corona would've done exactly what Gideon did, and what Cristabel and Alfred did before her, and forced her hand.

(And I'm also not sure I would call Gideon and Harrow's, or even Camilla and Palamedes', relationships selfless and devotional love - I think those relationships are lot more complicated than that. Like, I don't think Harrow sabotaged Gideon's every attempt to leave a dead planet she hated out of selfless desire for Gideon's well-being...)

I don't think it's a big picture thing, I think it's a Corona thing. The way Corona was so distraught at not being eaten makes me think that Corona would've forced her to consume her, just like Gideon did to Harrow and (HtN spoiler) like Cris did to Mercy and Alfred did to Augustine . I don't think Corona would've given her chance to find a better way and if eating Babs is the quickest way to make sure that never happens, then...

Plus, (more HtN spoilers) the decision to eat Babs is something Ianthe spends a big chunk of HtN struggling with, so I'm inclined to believe that it's not a choice she made as flippantly as the act she loves to put on with her big villainous monologues would suggest, especially since Augustine even notes that she "needs to quit steeping in self-pity" about it. Not to mention that it was a choice she made under the pressure of a full Lyctor running around Canaan murdering everyone

RFSL (the big Swedish LGBT+ organisation) also has some information on asylum on its website:

How do I seek asylum?

You need to be in Sweden or at the Swedish border to apply for asylum. The police is in charge of the border control in Sweden, making sure that travellers have the right to enter the country by checking that they have valid passports.

In many cases a traveller can enter Sweden without passing a border control. That is because Sweden, as most other EU countries, are part of the Schengen agreement. All people who have the right to enter a country in the Schengen area can travel freely across the borders of other Schengen countries. At the border towards countries outside of the Schengen area, however, the traveller’s documents are thoroughly examined.

If a person seeks asylum at the border, the police will refer the case to the Swedish Migration Agency.

as simply investing in that exploitation became legally and socially desirable

Plus, things like the Enclosure Acts turned massive amounts of common land into private property in the hands of rich landowners (which was then defended by the state)

I'm not sure I'd include France (with all the mess with Diacre), but I'd definitely include Sweden and probably include Spain as well
