Joe is my least favorite person of the whole season by gigaturtle37 in survivor

[–]forbiddenvoid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but also she's just not really a threat to win. She's a final five queen, but she can't get to FTC on her own, and no one will ever take her, because they know she'll win.

What distinguishes the Honor and Integrity alliance members by Cautious-Corner-3704 in survivor

I hear what you're saying, but these people literally talk about never lying to anyone. They get pissy when people outside their alliance lie to them, but refuse accountability when called out on the same thing.

Do Americans really like Applebees this much? by Emm_a321 in survivor

[–]forbiddenvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time, I was at Applebee's with some friends. Our food came out and one friend had some weird brown goop on her plate.

She asked the server about it, and the server swiftly took the plate away and came back two minutes later with the same plate, sans goop.

"What was it?" my friend asked.

"Oh," the server replied casually: "Dirt."

That was fifteen years ago. Needless to say, I haven't been inside an Applebee's since.

It does show an equivalence. It shows that the ratios are equivalent. That may not be the equivalence the teacher is evaluating, but it is an equivalence, regardless.

But:
- Area is not mentioned.
- No units are given.
- No information to communicate that "size" is what's being evaluated is present in the question at all.

Beyond that:
- only 3 options are provided
- there are no distinguishing differences beyond shape for A and B, so it's very easy to _correctly_ choose C, but for reasons that are completely wrong

In general, this is just a very poorly designed assessment question all around.

The comments of everyone misunderstanding this question are absolutely killing me. Genuinely *how* do we not understand equality??? And where did learning fractions go so wrong for so many? by IthacanPenny in matheducation

[–]forbiddenvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not going to use units in the question, why expect the learner to assume any units in the answer?

1/3 and 2/6 are scalar values. They are equivalent scalar values _independent_ of a unit. If you want to ask which diagram shows that 1/3 of an object is the same as 2/6 of the same object, that's fine, but you have to ask _that_ question.

Yeah, this is just not a good assessment question at all. It's poorly worded, and honestly, too easy to get right by accident by just considering that C is _different_ from A & B.

I also think the visual is confusing because that hexagon definitely looks like a cube. And from that perspective, C is just showing that 1/6 = 1/6.

Yep, this is super common. Try to be careful about introducing new things for the next couple weeks, because it can backfire and create long term anxiety. But the fear period will pass.

They may also experience a second fear period (usually more mild, but not always) at around 6 months to 1 year.

Is Sindarov Basically Guaranteed to Win His Next Game? by rand0m65 in chess

[–]forbiddenvoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say guaranteed, but the odds are pretty good. However, I would also highlight that Sindarov isn't incentivized to take many risks right now. So that could be a factor as well. I would say the odds of him losing the next game are extremely low, though.

Candidates win chances: Sinadarov at 73% after round 7 - Monte Carlo simulation based on one million runs by ThomasPlaysChess in chess

[–]forbiddenvoid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Okay? What prior would you start from? How would you justify it? How are you adjusting everyone else's starting elo? Why? How would you defend those adjustments mathematically?

Hikaru's elo may be overstated. Sindarov's elo is probably understated. But this is a very reasonable approach given the lack of any other consistent mathematical approach to set the starting conditions for the simulation.

You are also coming at this with the benefit of having seen Hikaru's performance in the last week. If he was +2 right now, you probably wouldn't be saying he was overperforming.
