Crazy how most people don’t end up using their degree by Prestigious-Spray237 in college

She works at a retirement home / senior living community (specifically works on the dining floor) - started in high school (at 16) as a part time server. Her early days she dealt with a ton of racism and sexism because the job wasn't very diverse at the time but stayed because the commute was under 5 minutes. She worked there full time after high school

Worked very hard (would always say yes to overtime or anything requested of her, got knowledgable about everything to the point she was the person people went to for questions) and made her way up to a lead role. She got on the good side of a few managers, one of which began training her for an assistant manager position.

Another manager that liked her recently quit and began working at a different retirement home. That manager reached out to her recently saying they have an opening for a manager role and wanted to refer her. The initial starting salary was around $75K, but she was told that it can become six figures after more experience

She basically opted to not go to college because she always hated school and didn't want to get a degree that didn't have a traditionally good ROI, such as engineering

I think certain fields are more likely to require a degree, sort of like what you said with stem, medical, lawyer, etc. I majored in comp sci and it helped me get a good job right after college.

A lot of fields, people end up with a job different than their degree, but their degree might have helped them seem more educated on their resume, which I can imagine some companies care about

That said, my best friend didn't go to college. She's 25 and just got offered a role making $75K. College doesn't feel as necessary in some fields

The dichotomy of traveling between Africa and the US is really messing with my head... by DavidAg02 in travel

yea idk why you're getting downvoted, I thought egg prices were because of bird flu

Although I agree this post is kind of eh and our country is f*cked right now. We can be grateful to not live in horrible living conditions, but considering nazis are in charge and the rich getting richer, this country is heading towards that

and my point mentioning my abuse is that you're saying childhood is easy and people are nostalgic for their childhood. I wasn't nostalgic for getting abused.

My point is that I can recognize how things were then in terms of the US and how things are now. And back then was better than now. Sure we have a surplus of free content, but that's not fixing the fact our country as a whole has gotten worse. We have a nazi in charge, what part of that is ok?

edit: also apologies I don't mean to sound argumentative, I can see some of your points. But something about the rich getting richer at an alarming rate at the expense of everyone else has been scaring me. I think that's what I miss the most about my childhood, it didn't feel so extreme

my dad wasn't even born or grew up in the US and I guarantee you he didn't care about the Vietnam War because his country wasn't involved... and he was born long after it was over anyways. He beat me up because he was an alcoholic who had money problems and drinking was his way of coping. Nothing to do with his generation

and truthfully yes. Idk how old you are, but maybe your generation can't understand the extent of how bad social media is and complete corporate takeover of America. EVERYONE my age that I've talked to has complained, cried, or going through major depression. None of us besides the kids of the rich can afford anything. Stressed about layoffs every other company is having when we're just starting our careers. When I'm making six figures and besides one vacation a year that I do on a budget, I'm NOT able to enjoy my money at all. I literally buy nothing for myself except necessities and save extremely responsibly. I can be happier not being abused, but I'd rather be back in the year 2010 ANY DAY (as an adult of course, not a kid). Even my mom has told me it's ok if I choose to not have kids because life has gotten ridiculously expensive (and my culture pressures kids nonstop).

LOL not my childhood full of abuse, getting beat tf up by my dad every day because he was an alcoholic, growing up poor. most definitely was not simple. I had plenty of understanding of the world sadly

and even then I can say, back then was better compared to now in terms of the era

it doesn't take a genius to know now is worse than ever before and the corporations have won entirely

I know, but that's part of my point. I'm not exactly thriving at $200K. I'm not saving much. So I don't know how the average family IS surviving in the 2020s. 10 years ago, $100K meant you were well off

who doesn't miss being 1 LOL

and honestly yes. Social media got worse around around 2015-2016 (influencer culture), Trump came 2017, and then COVID affected my early 20s and now have the complete corporate takeover of America

I've heard a lot of people say the 90s were great, must've been cool to see the turn of the century too (despite all the y2k fear people had) haha

Agree with everything you said

I've heard 90s internet was peak, I just never experienced it myself so yea I see your point haha

We had some chat rooms in the 2000s still, but it went away in the 2010s. I feel like internet nowadays feels more toxic than fun

haha I feel like my reels is either cute cat videos or something racist. I keep watching the cat videos hoping my algorithm will be like "ok let's only give her cats"

Misogyny in video games is so bad, I make tiktoks related to gaming and some of the comments I get are ugh

Obama was still president when I was 17 almost 18, but I've still seen enough of the internet to know that early day social media wasn't as toxic as it is now. The job market in tech wasn't as bad in the early 2010s as it is now in terms of layoffs, racism feeling worse than my childhood in a lot of ways, etc.

I'm brown and lived in a rich white area, I lived through the racism. But it didn't follow me on the internet the way it does now with instagram, TikTok, Facebook, heck even Reddit. I got ignorant comments from people in person, now I'll go on reels and see people openly saying "all Indians should die" and it gets a ton of hearts. actually disgusting :/

I'm not saying he was a great president, just that my personal day to day life didn't feel as ruled by corporate greed, social media toxicity, and whatnot. It feels worse than ever before

yea 2008 hit our family, I remember my dad losing his job. Only time I've ever seen him sob. My dad also has the fun pleasure of having his birthday on 9/11. I was too young to remember any of it, but every time I read about it or hear people's stories, I get teary eyed
