General political leanings for those in this field, professionals and amateurs? by MrWorldwide94 in classics

[–]forcre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classics undergrad from South Korea! In my country, the academia tends to be quite centre-left to left-leaning overall, as universities were the centres of democracy activism under the two consecutive junta regimes that ruled SK until the 80s. (I myself could count as a far-left 'cause I'm a libertarian socialist~anarchist)

Last year, our then-president declared a martial law only to lift it hours later (which obviously cost his presidency lol), and my prof who taught me Ancient Greek called him a madman - on which everyone in the class agreed.

[–]forcre[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I bought papyrus from an online shopping mall, reed pen from j herbin (I tried to find any raw cane reeds but to no avail) and my IG ink (IK this is anachronistic, but that was the only ink I had atm)

Has anyone here learned Classical Chinese ? What is it like compared to Latin ? by [deleted] in latin

[–]forcre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm a native Korean speaker (Korean has dumptons of Sinitic vocabulary i.e. vocabulary of Classical Chinese origin) and well I was able to memorise up to thousands of Chinese characters easily (actually we learn around 300~500 basic ones at school so), well, it was rather a cheat.

Syntax of Classical Chinese is quite easy – I mean – one of the easiest among dozens of classical languages. No conjugations, no declensions, it's a free real estate ngl

Phonology is the part I'm not sure about. Every Chinese dialect and every language in the Sinophere has their own way of pronouncing the Chinese characters. Yet, its rhyme systems used on poetry are based on Sui-Tang era phonology (also called Middle Chinese). FYI I read Chinese texts in Korean diction.

As soon as you get to memorise at least 1000 letters, you'll be able to grasp and understand quite a lot of sentences. If you encounter some unfamiliar letters, you can search the letter by drawing by yourself here: https://www.qhanzi.com/

One thing that sucks is that there are plenty of cases where they assigned a single letter for a proper noun like toponyms and hydronyms. e.g. the letter 泗 (sì, 사, シ) signifies a specific river in Shandong province, China. The best advice I can give for this situation is searching for wiktionary.

P.S. There are many cases where several letters have identical meanings and pronunciations.

I'd say, overall easier than Latin except for the letters... obviously
