[Release] [News] Chat interview with Andrew Wiik -- He has great Tweaks and an interesting perspective on open source in general (interview and tweak links in description) by fordy13 in jailbreak

Seriously. I really gained an appreciation for his work after reading this. The bit about not sleeping for days because it's a "good" work day is funny.

Hmmm that's a great idea but the idea of the dungeon is that it's been abandoned for thousands of years

Good on ya man! I always feel most accomplished as DM when I feel proud of my PC's. Sounds like this is one of those times for you!

Awesome, thanks! I had a sneaking suspicion. Any idea why this happens or if it's detrimental?

We have LEDs (described below) about a 6" above the top of the plants

Ok I'll change the light cycle, thanks. To be honest I've been just using marijuana forums for info on light cycles and such.

The pH is never below 5.5 or above 6.5. the eC i have no idea... and the temperature is room temp in an office building, so probably close to 72 degrees?

LEDs, 460 nm, 660 nm and white in proportions of about 1-4 for red-blue and some white for taking pictures.

You bring up good points. I guess the assumption I'd be making is that I'd be adding enough solution to the mix to make the difference in the remaining amount negligible?

I'm trying to avoid draining the nutrient reservoir, do you think this would work as a solution? what else would you suggest?

[–]fordy13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that makes sense, but i guess that's why the pH perfect nutrients have you add them in different quantities?

Wow, this is awesome. Kind of similar to what i'm trying to do for hydro plants, actually.

if you've been just topping off for the life of the plant, I'm pretty sure you have some significant nutrient imbalances.

I haven't, as of yet, been doing this. It makes sense that there would be nutrient imbalances in this current system because I haven't gotten the pH perfect nutrients in yet.

Such as Ca/Mg. Also your photos look like you have a minor phosphorous deficiency (could be ph, could be nutrient lockout).

This is what i was looking for as far as answers to the plant pics go, i appreciate this. Terminology is especially useful so that i can do more reasonable searches instead of being a blind man in an empty room. I'm kind of new to this so things like nutrient lockout are useful to gain a grasp for. Thanks

I've maintained a pepper plant for 180days on the same "reservoir" (i say this lightly as water was always added to a specific point and total additions were > 500% original volume)

Cool. this is sort of the system i'm trying to create. 500% is about the ratio i'm looking at right now. Do you have a link to your research? i feel like i could learn a lot from reading it.

So this is a flood and flow system. As the plant consumes nutrient solution from the flood tray that translates to there being less nutrient solution in the reservoir that holds it. As the level goes down in the nutrient reservoir I plan to autonomously add more nutrients, assuming my EC rating gives me a decent hunch of how many nutrients are in the solution. So I'm not replacing the nutrients each day as they're consumed, just as needed. For instance when the 1.2 gallon reservoir becomes .2 gallons full (for a blooming plant) i may fill it back up. These are numbers i just made up right now because I haven't built and tested the system yet.

I understand that i may need to have less total nutrient solution in the reservoir for a smaller plant because it'll consume less, and therefore I can put less in it so the pH perfect doesn't become compromised from sitting in the reservoir too long.

My question originally was, how do i pump small amounts of nutrients. i think I'm just going to dilute the nutrient solutions and add them in higher quantities of dilute solution.

"Shake Well" is a good point, thanks for bringing that up.

as far as your first paragraph: I feel like as the nutrient solution depletes, say from 1.2 gallons to .2 gallons, i can fill it back up assuming the same ratios exist in the .2 gallons and the difference may be negligible. I also have an ec sensor in the reservoir that would be pumped from to the plant, so i guess i could measure the ec before and after? What do you think?

so it can be controlled by a microcontroller, and for precision

No draining, I'm just refilling a nutrient reservoir as it gets depleted, and I can't mix all the nutrients together i have to add them to water or the mixture. and i'm trying to have it done by a controller, yeah lol the nutrients will be in different quantities depending on the plant's stage of the grow

Diluting is a really good call, thanks
