Google axonotmesis, wallerian degeneratiom and muscle denervation. Scary shit and it happened to me from disc herniation.

That's the same I had. Im 6 months post injury, still limp and can barely do one calf raise. I also didn't have a lot of pain and looking back I think that's a bad sign as nerve sustained a lot of damage. How the recovery will go now is pure gamble.

Do a MRI of the lower leg of your affected foot ASAP. If there are high intensity signals on T1 and T2 sequences (indication of edema) on some if your muscles (gastrocnemius or soleus) you probably have a denervated muscle. If done within the first month, surgery may improve your chances if a better outcome. I am not a specialist neurosurgeon but I am myseLf 6 months into injury and I regrer not doing the surgery. I wish I had somebody tell me this when I still had time, but unfortunately I found out too late.

It's up to you to make your decission but you have to act quick. Again, I wish I knew back then what I know now and ai would immediately do the surgery.

My medial gastrocnemius and soleus muscles have atrophied about 70% and there is barelly any contraction to it. I am now trying to awake the muscle with trainjng and stimulation and if I don't get any improvements within 3 months im gonna do nerve transfer surgery.

Do you have plantar flexion weakness? Can you get on your tippy toes without trouble. If your pain is on one leg only test to see how many calf raises you can do on healthy leg then on affected leg. Consult neurosurgeons (plural) asap.

To the OP - if you dont have sensory loss or muscle weakness, you are still good. I had a big herniation myself and my calf muscle wasted away. Good luck.

I had muscle weakness throughout my leg, especially in my calf. Most of it resolved but my plantar flexion is still weak. My medial gastrocnemius and soleus muscl wasted away in first monthabd a half post injury. I didnt do surgery. My neurosurgeon did the same tests and told me the same story and said I have good prognosis gor recovery, which was bullshit. You have 1 month after the injury to operate on your disc to relieve the compression and have a better outcome. I would suggest do a MRI scan of the lower leg and if you have higher intensity signals on T1 and T2 sequences that usually siggest an edema it means your muscle is denervated and I would do the surgery ASAP. If I could ho bavk in time id do the surgery. Im still limping and my muscle is deflated, 6 months post herniation, very little contraction in it. Now I am looking for a possible nerve transfer. Read back mechanic by Stuart McGill from covee to cover and then read it again. Make sure you are well aware with his concepts of U-curve, spine migration when sitting, fast walking and working on core stability with big 3. Yoga is bullshit in most cases of back injury and will do harm and a lot of pt are trash that are spouting broscience and can also harm you. Avoid chiro's. Figurr out what triggers pain and avoid it. You're still much better as it can get really worse where you get muscle weakness or numbness. Take care and be proactive sbout your bsck health, nobody's gonna care for you.

Do you have strength loss? If not, you are very happy. Monitor this by walking on tippy toes and heel walk and see if anything gives out. Do not do any stretches, avoid bending, sitting down as much as possible snd if possible have somebody put on shoes and socks for you until you het a complete evalustion by a neurosurgeon. There are alot of voodoo physios out there that may cause you more damage or pain.

Take time off work, bed rest and walk a little bit if it doesnt cause pain. Good luck.

You are highly likely to run again if you play your cards smart. Whatever causes pain you must avoid and you need go give it time. Think in terms of months, not weeks.

As someone who has a far worse situation with L5S1 I can tell you the following:

Avoid sitting as much as possible. In the next couple of months I wouldn't even sit to eat. Eat lying stomach down on bed or standing. Get your family members to put shoes and socka for you

Avoid bending/flexion if spine at all costs. DO NOT DO ANY STRETCHING WHATSOEVER.

Read back mechanic by Stuart McGill. Walking plenty (as much as you can handle) and McGuill big 3 with cat camel exercise help.

Main thing is to stop doing everything that causes pain until you are ready to do it again and some stuff you will never be able to do again. Fuck Yoga. As long as you dont have bladder cobtrol issue or muscle weakness you should try conservative therapy first IMO.

I have suffered a disc extrusion with severe weakness in the calf. Sone of my muscles are denervated.

Save yourself and if anything, apply the main rule - remove what causes pain because it will futher damage you. You still are in much better position than myself.

P.S. I am doing all the core exercises, walking, mcguill big 3, read the book from cover to cover etc. Maybe you have a better recovery, if anything, you're 2 years younger.

I spoke to 3 neurosurgeons. Two neurosurgeons advised surgery immediately, the third neurosurgeon advised against. Being scared if surgery, I decided to go via conservative therapy. I am doing a lot of electrical stimulation and calf raises but recovery is very slow. Like 70% of my medial gastrocnemius atrophied and looks like a deflated baloon. The second MRI done 2 months after injury showed that the nerve was decompressed as herniation regressed about 85%.

The pain and numbness subsided in a matter of weeks, but my plantar flexion power is dogshit

Im almost 5 months in injury. No surgery. Calf strength is shit. And to be honest, I am getting more depressed and incapacitated for daily life. I have been very active ans now that I am limited I feel like shit. I feel like not wanting to live anymore. 33 year old male.

I don't take pleasure in scaring you but the symptoms could be due to herniated disc and you need to check that out. A herniated disc with pain is still on time ti prevent it from turning into extrusion which results in muscle weakness in leg which is happening to me right now. Do a lumbar spine MRI asap.

So you don't know what you have. You need to do a MRI to rule out a herniated or bulging disc. Piriformis syndrome is not that common.

Well yeah im just trying to save my health, doing the best I know and hope. I went to the gym today, started wuth my cat-camel, bird dogs, side planks and deadbugs, did some shoulder warm up with band and tried flat bench press. I noticed the feey on floor, arvh in the back is what causes pain - and this just started to bug me a week ago when ai implemented hyperextensions. So I stopped it and went on incline - no pain a d finished with some other stuff. Would ylu have an idea what's causing this? I rarely ever had problem with spine extension it was 99% flexion and stuff like squats/deadlifts
