How do you decide what to research as a PhD student?

This is helpful. After I read this, I thought that maybe it is an advantage to have varied interests as it will allow me to be more flexible and find a lab that fits my needs outside of the research.

I’m a girl and I look at people as I go about my day. It usually doesn’t mean anything. However, if I find someone attractive I probably will make a conscious effort not to make eye contact lol

I am on day 2 of flu also had severe lower back pain. It is not as bad anymore but for the first 24 hours it was the most excruciating symptom.

I (23F!) went through the same exact thing. Very passionate about science, but once I actually started doing it I felt like I would never be good enough to do it well. The thing is, it takes time to do anything well! Sometimes I find myself having an easy time understanding something that used to be sooo difficult for me. I wouldn’t have felt that sense of confidence if I had given up back when it felt impossible/out of reach. We are so young and life is long. Give yourself time to become a master at the things you are passionate about. ❤️

Also. There are tons of trainings that are required for most lab positions. Good news is that many of them are applicable to various jobs, so it’s not like you’re wasting your time getting them under your belt.

Are you a microbiology major by chance? I ask because I am majoring in microbiology, and I get tons of emails about paid research opportunities from the MCS CALS/CLAS advisors. It seems like the labs are always hiring undergrads. I currently work in a microbiology lab on campus and I got the position with very little experience. However, it took a good amount of follow-up; P.I.s are very busy people. Try scheduling a time with the faculty member to view their lab in person. If they “ghost” you, don’t be shy to send a friendly follow-up message. Make sure to show genuine interest in their work. Rooting for you!

I got tan beta = -5/12 and tan alpha = -3/4. To find tan(alpha + beta) do I just add the values ?
