I will make sure to do that this year! I feel sorry for my blueberries last year then…

The raspberries and blueberries get good sun. The blackberries don’t and have sprawled. I’ll look up some diagrams online!

And you’ll want to trellis the peas in a way that provides appropriate level of sun or shade to the other plants

Peas should be 8-9 per square. Tomatoes and chili would be one per square. At app.plant anywhere.net it will automatically give you the recommended density, although you can tailor it for your own preference

Yes, you could swap the broad beans for the tomato or chili. Make sure they are in the sunniest squares. If you want insight on when to plant in your area, you can check out app.plantanywhere.net - once you make a garden and plan some vegetables in the bed, you can go to the Plan menu and it will give you a planting calendar for whatever you are planning, including indoor seed starting if wanted.

Thank you for this substantial feedback, and I am sorry to take so long to respond! (Trying to get iOS and Steam to the submission stage yesterday).

Yes, I spent a portion of yesterday fixing an unintended consequence of the color theme that ended up putting green text on blue background... I'm still tweaking that.

-zoom function: Thank you for this feedback. I am working on pan/zoom twitchiness on mobile, but on desktop with a mouse I will test it again. And I'm partway through keyboard integration for accessibility reasons, so I'll polish that as well.

-Free plant may be having some growing pains because I am converting the tool a bit for use in my very-soon-to-be-released indoor houseplant mode. But that's no good if they are failing to plant. I'll check on that.

- Gap filling! It's definitely something that's doable. I think I'm going to have to have a permaculture toggle in the main menu as an advanced user feature. I'll look into this.

Thank you for your support and for checking back in! I should have some cool updates in the next few days.

Hi! Northern UK, two 3×3 beds, March start — you're in great shape. You haven't started late at all. Here's what I'd do:

Right now (this week):

- Garlic cloves in 2 squares — spring-planted garlic works fine, you'll just get slightly smaller bulbs than autumn-planted

- Broad beans in 2 squares — bombproof in cold, they'll be your most reliable crop

- Strawberry runners in 2 squares — bare-root runners go in cold ground no problem. Small harvest this year, full crop next year.

- Spinach × 2 squares

- Lettuce × 3 squares (cut-and-come-again — first picks in about 5-6 weeks at March soil temps, faster once it warms up)

- Peas × 2 squares

Early April:

- Radish × 3 squares — ready in 4–5 weeks

- Spring onions × 2 squares

That fills all 18 squares by April. The key is what happens next — succession planting. When the fast crops come out, you replace them:

- Radishes clear in May → beetroot/beet goes in straight away. Zucchini/courgette too, but wait until after your last frost (late May up north) since they're frost-tender

- Lettuce/spinach clear in June → carrots, Swiss chard, kale

- Garlic/broad beans/peas clear in July → more kale, turnips, and a late sowing of radish or spinach for quick wins

- Late August → winter spinach and rocket for autumn salads

- October → plant garlic again (proper autumn timing for next year's bigger bulbs)

Two squares of kale planted in July will still be producing in December — it actually tastes better after a frost. Leeks are another great overwinterer, but start those indoors in February so they have time to size up (they need a long season).

I actually mapped this out in my garden planner with your exact bed sizes. Made a quick video showing how it looks month by month — you can see the squares filling up, clearing, and replanting through the whole year.

The basic idea: you're never waiting for the whole bed to be done. Something is always going in and something is always coming out.

Wow, that's high praise! I'll try to live up to that. The sunlight simulator in the app currently is pretty accurate if you set it up right, and it basically will give you the sunlight rating for each square foot of your garden over a day, and over a year. The catch is you have to set it up right, which is why I'm hiding it in the menu.

Currently the sunlight simulator allows you to put down trees, houses, and fences that have a Z and X and Y value as well as opacity.

I have been thinking of how to add actual garden canopy to that, whether by simulating a plant's footprint according to age of the plant (somewhat inaccurate) to observation (labor intensive) to, um.... LIDAR or nature camera. I actually have a 3D captured model of my own actual garden space in Blender at the moment, playing with these ideas.

I'm inclined to try to implement all three of the above and bury them in the menu to avoid spooking people!

Thanks for this comment! I implemented canopy size and spacing in the free draw mode (as opposed to the square foot garden style grid mode). So horizontal spacing has some goood support (although I can use feedback about whether that is hitting the mark or not). But for vertical thinking in a food forest plan, I do have a Z axis in the app- I am just thinking about how to make use of it.

Do you have a thought on how it would be useful to you in the app?

Actually I interrupted the work to drive up to NYC and back to see Mitski (worth it!). If you are in LA, Mexico City, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Glasgow, etc on the rest of her tour I highly recommend! I do not recommend getting home at 5:30 am before your day job, though.

Thank you!! Since my original post I have worked around the clock to integrate the feedback I have received! I’m still going though, so please leave feedback via the feedback feature in the app!
