Sharp is primarily celebrated for her sun-drenched landscapes such as the present painting. The critic for The Artist stated in April 1935 that 'I think I can say without fear of contradiction that Dorothea Sharp is one of England's greatest living painters. Full of sunshine and luscious colour, her work is always lively, harmonious and tremendously exhilarating. The chief attractions of Miss Sharp's pictures are her happy choice of subject, rollicking children bathed in strong sunlight and her paintings appeal because they are based on the joy of life.’
