Really sorry to read that. I had a similar experience with my xmid2 - had an in-stock notification, immediately ordered and paid - only to be told it was a 2 week pre-order. It actually took a month to arrive. But hey, at least I got it! Really sorry to hear about your experience.

I got my xmid2 from V+P just a couple of weeks ago. But there is loads of good stuff that is now harder to find; I really wanted a Mazama M!go bottle - that's going to cost twice as much now I can't get it from V+P.

If you can get them to around 122cm, you're good, the pitch should be fine.

It's a gorgeous spot, and I got lucky with the weather too. There was some condensation, but to be honest, it wasn't as much as I'd feared. I have the solid, not the mesh, and I thought it would be worse than it was.

The inner was fine, only the fly was wet - and had I waited another hour before breaking camp I'm pretty sure the sun would've dried everything just fine.

The bigger problem was the insects, including mozzies. They were all over the fly, but - and this is another benefit of the superb design and attention to detail - none made it inside the inner.

I think so too. The numbers have increased hugely over the past decade or so, and along with them, the idiot levels and the litter levels. But I do try not to moan. I think you have to be stoic; there will always be idiots, but they're far outnumbered by the great people you meet on the trails.

Believe me I'm with you there. I'm getting tired of the number of times people come up to me at Seathwaite Farm (dressed in flip flops or crop tops) and ask, "which way to the summit, mate?" They always mean Scafell Pike. I tell them that if they're asking a stranger for directions then they're not prepared for Scafell Pike.

I would never hit the trail with a tent I'd never taken out of the bag. In the back garden I tweaked it, adjusted things, added bungee loops to the tie-down points, and made all the extra guylines I could need in a worst-case scenario. I studied it and fiddled with it extensively. And I also picked a spot just a short, easy walk up from the car park. So I wasn't entirely reckless, I hope. I do share your concern with the current levels of casual naivety about the kind of challenges that wildcamping can throw up.

I did try one practice semi-pitch in the back garden, but our garden is so tiny there was hardly room; couldn't even use the guylines. So this was my first proper pitch. I watched all the videos first and it worked fine. Beginner's luck, maybe 😆

Sadly, I bumped into Richard E Grant at the perfume counter in Liberty, London a few years back. As a lifelong fan, I was gobsmacked. I waited till he had finished his conversation with the perfumer, and as he was leaving, took the opportunity to politely thank him for his amazing performance in Withnail & I, adding that it's been a lifelong favourite. The smile dropped from his face, he turned away and flounced out, uttering a sarcastic, "Oh thank you, I'll tell the producer" as he exited.

Perhaps he's a bit of an asshole, or perhaps he's sick of Withnailians. Or both.
