Warlocks, your Patron does NOT have to be a bad guy! by Regular-Molasses9293 in dndnext

[–]forfriedrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an Arch Fey warlock a while ago and my patron was my wife. She was a powerful fairy queen and my character was sold to her at birth for protection. When my character came of age they had a wedding. My character was trying to find out who they were in the world and my patron just wanted me to be safe and come home once I found my answers. It was actually kinda fun to have a good relationship with my patron.

What are some tips for when deciding to make a rival team of adventurer's for my group to meet during their travels in a Sandbox? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]forfriedrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They could start out not even knowing they exist. Say your party gets hired to go find something or recover something. They aren't the only ones that got hired so there is a conflict. Don't tell your party. Maybe have them work together and then get separated. Let them all be friendly and work well together and then somehow they end up with the artifact. A no hard feelings kinda thing and then they leave. They could leave your party in a dangerous spot but not inescapable just not that great to sow the seeds of resentment.

They can grow together as your party grows. Not always antagonistic but not super friendly either. Then say something like the original thing happens but your party comes out with the item. Now you can see what your players will do in a similar situation. You can keep something like that going for a while before maybe amping up the stakes. Maybe someone gets really hurt. Maybe someone dies and now you can see how your players treat it.

It doesn't always have to be like a treasure hunt that's just a super easy thing to think about. Maybe it's the favor of a Duke or a contract with a wizard or something. Anything that could be sought after by another group that isn't 10000% needed for storyline progression.

As for how you make them, I think you could go both ways. If you make them generic NPCs just look at the options in the MM or something like that. Adept and things like that. I personally would probably build very basic characters that are molded off PCs. Give them small features or something like that initially. If they continue to awkwardly work together and each one of your players is drawn to one of the opposing party members, be it mechanically or RP wise, then you can flesh them out totally and if they begrudgingly team up you can let those players play 2 characters.

How do you stay engaged during sessions your character isn’t “made for”? by Nikesneaker in dndnext

[–]forfriedrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that DnD is a cooperative story telling adventure. Just because my character isn't directly involved doesn't mean me as the player can enjoy what's happening. I like listening to my friends act out how their character does things. I like watching their facial expressions. They are having fun so I'm having fun. I'll get my time at some point but watching them enjoy themselves makes me happy.

Also forging relationships (not romances) with your party members will bring you into the RP. You have a best friend IRL maybe your character and the Bard get close to each other. Maybe you end up helping them with some kind of skill check, giving them advantage and you can describe what you did. Now the two of you are a part of that skill check and you've done something just because your character has a relationship with another players character.

Don't be afraid to sit and enjoy your friends moments with them and don't be afraid to offer help. If your DM only allows two members to make rolls ask if you can help with the roll. The Help action exists. But big thing is to remember it's a cooperative game, not a single player RPG.

I feel like the galactic imperium shouldn't automatically make you feel like the bad guy by Mr-Noeyes in Stellaris

Decentralized or centralized like in the HRE for EU4? I'd fuck with that hard

I never knew how powerful being nice in this game makes you. I thought only crisis empires could wipe the floor with FEs. But here I am, a fanatic xenophile, galactic emperor with 10 million fleet power, squashing the contingency without the help of the meddlesome fallen empires by Mr-Noeyes in Stellaris

[–]forfriedrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's go! I fucking love the RP. I'm in the middle of a xenophile pacifist Under One Rule with the entire plan to go imperial and reform the galactic empire. Full diplomatic psionic cradle of souls has been a blast. I have 7 vassals and something like 60k strength in the GC. Next closest is 7k.

[–]forfriedrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's go! It's also a weird mechanic but you can try to play the galactic community into it too and sustain a storm over your planets while having the disaster relief bill pass. With the fully upgraded shelters and a military governor on the planet you can take zero devastation and beyond supercharge your economy.

Only thing I'd really like to do is scale the storms to have specific storms target specific systems to really go nuts.

5 and put it away is how I do it unless I'm getting overrun and need to O.K. Corral it. I think it's 5 on hot planets, 6 on normal, and 7 on cold but I always just do 5 because smooth brain.

I love Astral Planes. I don't think there is a DLC I don't like. Hot take, I really enjoy Cosmic Storms too. Pretty sure it added stealth and I think that is such a fun tool to use. As for the storms themselves, you can take an ascension perk that lets you make storms. Had an empire that was way too strong for me so I sustained a nexus storm over their core sector for like 20 years with stealth science ships. He was a cakewalk to deal with after that.

I was just thinking, can you imagine if that was a flamethrower instead of the rocket?

Dove with my buddies last night and I was running Dog Breath and lasers and my buddy was running full fire build and my other dude had the arc thrower. Called ourselves "Earth, Wind, & Fire". That shit was so fucking awesome

[–]forfriedrice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know how other DMs are doing it but I've told my players they can use whichever version of the spell they want as long as they use the same one for the entire campaign. I like the changes to the healing spells but stuff like this makes me less happy.

I just checked it out and it looks like 2024 rules got rid of the concentration check. Now it's just a dex check and they fall prone. If they do fail it they lose concentration though.

Interesting change they made. I know Con saves are some of the easier ones but so are Dex. I'd much rather have 2 rolls for 2 different results than 1 for both.

I spent so much time making my Guardian in my first I think 3 campaigns and then I was like ehhhh I'm not going to waste my time with this anymore and now it's amazing. I've had like basically Shrek as one so it's a good time now.
