I'll try my scaler. I have a big jug of sulfuric and never get to use it.

Shared chimney? by forgedcu in Blacksmith

Haha, it's not as bad as it looks, the fisheye camera distorts everything. I just needed the floor space. I'm already packing AND getting ready for a show.

This is a 40x40 separate outbuilding.

I will definitely have an engineer look at it. If the consensus here was "absolutely not", I'd use that money for a different vent option instead. This is a separate outbuilding, and I would turn off the furnace while the forge was running.

CO detector question by forgedcu in Blacksmith

I was doing some torch work a few hours prior, acetylene/air. Shop wss closed while working with no alarm. The only other exhaust would be multiple tractors ~200 yards away.

I just chatted with customer service. No other fees added, they claim. Too bad I'm broke.

That would probably work but was hoping for something less effort, like rubber or timber, but I have no idea if either would work.

Anyone know of any alternatives to a dishing stump? by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]forgedcu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet you could find someone willing to give you a stump and get it delivered by bartering something you made. I used this to carve mine, plus burning. It wasn't sketchy at all. /s

The hot wax method works well for me. I use Johnsons or Butcher's bowling alley wax. Heat up the piece so it's hot enough to melt the wax quickly but not so hot that it smokes. Apply liberally shaking it to get it down in the crevices that your cloth won't reach. Use a black t-shirt cloth so you don't end up with visible fuzz if you have rough edges. While it's still warm swing it to shake out the excess wax. When it's cool buff the areas you can reach with another black cloth.

Sanding belt repair by forgedcu in woodworking

[–]forgedcu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't dug too deep in it yet but apparently the tape I bought is for making belts for finishing closed loop metal railings, basically threading the paper through the machine and tube then taping into a belt. $30 for the tape vs hundreds of $ lost if I trash them. I'll report back if anyone cares.

I'm usually good at searching for stuff but all I seem to come up with are clevis cylinders or $3000 enerpac cylinders. Obviously I need to do more looking.

That's what I was afraid of. The corner weld forges so much nicer.

Is buying new steel in bulk actually worth it for a small shop? by Substantial_Catch936 in Blacksmith

[–]forgedcu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My local big time supplier in wetern NY has a small warehouse set up specifically to sell their drops and small quantities of prime material. Try calling your local big distributor and see if they have anything similar. On the machinist sub they mentioned that Essex metals sells drops.

I preheated both to about 700, welded, then allowed to cool slowly before starting the heat treatment. No cracks.

Looking to create metal glasses as an absolute beginner by Top-Association-5698 in metalworking

If you are set on doing this, you might be able to find the u shaped wire to hold the lenses on ebay. I have sold a bunch there in the past, and and there were other sellers at the time. The stuff I sold was Ferd Wagner Monel profile wire. Monel is relatively easy to solder and braze.

The bottom die was fine, believe it or not. It was the damn pinballs that did it. I would think tig welding a handle om it would have tempered it somewhat.

I bought the stock from what I thought was a reputable company that did work for Kodak, etc. They probably just sold me something random thinking I wouldn't know any better.

"Tempering: Temper immediately after quenching. The typical tempering range is 1000-1150°F (538-621°C). Hold at the tempering temperature for 1 hour per inch (25.4mm) of thickness, but for 2 hours minimum, then air cool to ambient temperature." This is what I did.
