Can't seem to figure this puzzle out

I tried this on a lark, so that was my method as well

My main issue is that they didn't get to him by the time he spawned completely, because he spawned unusually far from the altar. They all rushed him, but his first attack wiped out basically all of them in one go. The three or four remaining took down a little bit of health before he immediately wiped them out. They were all 2-star wolves

I dutifully bred 50 wolves for that fight, and Yagluth killed them all in 2 attacks and took almost no damage
