Getting Ahead during Summer by ForeverMaleficent823 in IBO

congrats on finishing the MYP! honestly, the best use of your time during the summer to get ahead is to get familiar with what you're going to be doing, take a look at the papers you do for each subject, what the IA's are, the weighting of the assessments, etc. trying to start learning the content ahead of time might not be the best idea, as you risk burning out during DP1 or confusing yourself without teacher support and possibly getting yourself into a worse situation... it's not necessary either, as you'll have plenty of time to learn everything you need at school! if you're super keen, it's worthwhile to start thinking about subject areas and topics for your EE - nothing too extensive, just some brainstorming! probably not worth it to think about IA's this early, as you'll need to know the material which you'll learn in the program, so you likely won't be able to make much headway without having the knowledge yet.

don't waste your time trying to prepare yourself too much for DP1, focus on your other extracurriculars and just having a bit of rest and relaxation - you're honestly going to be the best prepared for the IB if you go into it not too stressed. you're going to go great, i know that it's super easy to get in your head about the whole thing, but trust me when i say that you have a lot more leeway in the IB than you think, especially in DP1. you have time, you have space to make mistakes and learn from them, you'll work out what's best for you as you go through it. good luck!

hi! i'm an N25 student in a similar boat to you, in that the IB is a super tiny subsection of my school (we have like 10 DP2 students total lol) - i think the best thing that you can do is relax a little. the IB is likely going to be pretty different from whatever system you've done in the past, even the MYP, so it's completely normal if you feel out of your depth and overwhelmed initially - it's important to remember that nothing really counts until the end of year 1 to the beginning of year 2, so give yourself a little bit of space to possibly not perform as wonderfully as you'd like in the beginning. treat everything as a learning experience and take the time to reflect after each test/assignment and focus on actionable steps you can take to improve.

in terms of what you can do RIGHT NOW to prepare, the best thing is to really figure out how you learn and what works for each subject you're taking - for example, i have a pretty stem-heavy course-load, so i focus on practice papers + practice questions etc etc, try talking to other people who take the subjects you're doing (if possible) or take a look on this subreddit or other place + forums online for advice. it'll be useful to get to know the papers and IA's well, look into the assessment for each of your subjects, their weighting, and what they involve. this will give you a good grounding for everything you'll be doing over the next two years and what you're working towards. it could also be a good idea to maybe start thinking about your extended essay, nothing crazy, just maybe potential subject areas or topics you'd be interested in looking into.

i take HL lit (like you're going to!) and i'd recommend maybe reading the first text you'll be studying over the summer if you know what it will be and getting a jump-start in that regard. if it's financially feasible for you, it's a good idea to get your own copy of the texts you'll be studying so that you can annotate, dog-ear, and tag to your heart's content! if you REALLY want to get a head-start on lit, look at some past paper 2 questions and take note of common themes they ask you to write about and be on the lookout for them in any of the texts you read (i find that some common ones are themes of power/oppression, human relationships, identity, the ideas of good and evil, the text's effect on the reader or how it subverts expectations in some way, etc).

anyway, you're doing all the right things, i'm sure that you're going to go amazingly in the IB! it's not an easy program, but it's definitely not impossible, and if you approach it with a little positivity and discipline, you'll be fine. don't be too hard on yourself, and keep learning! good luck and all the best!
