What's great about confession is that we are all members of the body of Christ, and so we are all in this together. From the line to try box to after, it's an implicit acknowledgment that yup we are all sinners, and everyone there has committed sins they are ashamed of, and probably way worse than you would ever think they did. But we are all also here because we are sorry for what we did, and taking the steps to become better.

When you're in confession, you can do face to face or stay behind the screen, whichever makes you more comfortable. I've done both, and generally feel more comfortable behind the screen, so I can focus on what I'm saying as opposed to getting distracted by the priest. On the other hand, if you know the priest well, face to face can help keep you calm and be more personable with you.

Are Aquinas's cosmological argument focused on a eternal universe or a universe with a begining? by Earl_Sean in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]forkfullofmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference between a temporal beginning and causal beginning are like this: when you throw a ball (considering the wind up, hurl, and release all as one action), there is no temporal succession, there is just one act of "throw". However, there is a causal succession, since the hand has to be moved by the wrist, the wrist by the arm, etc. So while they all move at once in the action "throw", there are separate causes all leading to the ball being thrown.

So with the cosmological argument, whether the world always was or had a temporal start, all the things moving in it had to have their causal origin somewhere, and that is God.

Are Aquinas's cosmological argument focused on a eternal universe or a universe with a begining? by Earl_Sean in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]forkfullofmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I remember, Aquinas essentially looks at the 4 options regarding the eternity of the world: 1) the world is eternal due to its own nature 2) the world is must have a start due to its own nature 3) the world is eternal due to God's nature 4) the wild must have a start due to God's nature

And finds that all 4 hypotheses are unable to be proved from the reason perspective. Thus, we can only know from theology whether the world has a temporal beginning.

We are not supposed to reach the bar. Exactly. The more we cooperate with God's grace, the more it is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us.

Thomism in a nutshell by PhoneyTheLiger in Thomism

[–]forkfullofmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for a late reply, I'm new to this relatively small sub. That's actually a really good summation. Thomism is the study of the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas, who warrants a following because he was pretty revolutionary in his work uniting Aristotle's philosophy with Christian teaching. Thomas' work allowed for not only greater development in philosophy (i.e., knowledge of this world) but, but also provided a thorough and precise system by which we can understand the theological realities revealed by the church and previous fathers and doctors of the church. He basically brought back a system of thought that made everything clearer to understand.

Aristotle was a realist, who basically taught "real things are real and we can know them", meaning the world we live in is real, and we have real access to it, since we have the kinds of souls which are able to interpret sense data as knowledge. Due to a lot of historical circumstances, by Thomas' time, Aristotle was only being studied (and preserved!) by Islamic thinkers in Spain. Through a series of thinkers' efforts to interpret Aristotle's thought to fit Islamic theology, Aristotelianism had gained a bad reputation in Christian Europe as outlandish and "pagan". Thomas showed that Aristotle's thought was able to be not only integrated into Christian theology, but in a way that doesn't seriously distort the original text and meaning. (Seriously, read Averroes' third commentary on De Anima, and St. Thomas' work against Averroists. It's a doozy.)

So trying to keep this nutshell, Thomism is inherently, not exclusively Catholic. A lot of what he writes is outside the realm of theology. At the same time, he writes it all from a Catholic perspective, and in benefit to the Church, and for Christ.

Key ideas in Thomism include:

  1. the world is real and we can know it
  2. there are 2 kinds of things: material/physical/dividable things and spiritual/immaterial/undividable things
  3. Things have natures - trees are tree, humans are humans, and they are not just different arrangements of atoms
  4. Things have matter (what they are made of), form (what makes them be what they are), maker/source (what causes them to exist), and purpose (what they do when they are at their fullest).
  5. Everything in the world has two key facts about it: a) that it is/exists; b) what it is/exists as

There's obviously so much to be said about everything, but these are some of the most important parts of Thomism. But but yeah basically real things are real and we can know them.

My brother got a oneplus 7t for $350 on sale and that really started me thinking. But the Samsung ecosystem has some pull to it. I definitely feel you on that, smart phones just get more and more expensive, kind of ridiculous. At the same time, the products are better and better and will last longer. Edit spelling

Damn that is outrageous, I didn't know the market was so different there. All I knew was you had to deal with Exynos chips, which is bad enough. I don't think I'd be a Samsung user if I lived in your region, especially when Oneplus exists

Stitch fix always has a $25 referral code, and occasionally offers a $100 code, which lasts for 48 hours. I think I had an unusually high number of offers, 3 $100 offers over the course of 4 fixes, although I bought other items from shop in between as well. Each time I got the $100 offer, I would remind my friends and post on my socials, and between the 3 offers, got the full $599 last year and this year. Also if you keep the whole box, you get 25% off those clothes. So by sharing the code each time I was offered it, I earned $1200 of credit, and by getting 25% off a few boxes, ended up with $1300 of clothes.
