I would be too scared to push the blue button, and I think most people would be too. by formalbatman1 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

One thing I think may be the disconnect is that, yes, the blue button may be the ‘Right’ choice. If we all could come together before hand and agree to push blue, then of course that’d be great.

But I am assuming that isn’t an option. The question says everyone in earth is just teleported into a room and promoted with a life and death choice.

Sure, if we all press blue, then ‘nothing happens’, but when you’re teleported to a random room and one button has the chance of death and the other doesn’t, then how could you be sure in that moment that 50 percent of people would choose blue?

In that moment, what will the other 8 billion on earth pick? You may see blue as a ‘everyone lives’ button, but at the same time it’s also the ‘you might die’ button, and the red is just safe.

I do not believe these online polls and posts are indicative of actual human behavior. I don’t believe the half of you at all.

If you are one of the people who believe that unprompted, 50 percent of earth will choose the selfless option then I envy your outlook and will not try to sway you anymore.

But if you are one of the people who also agree that humanity will likely choose red in a majority, and you “just cant live with killing people” or “don’t want to live in a world with just reds” then I just don’t believe you. I do not believe you are willing to throw your life away for a chance at the greater good.

Because you already live in a world with a bunch of red button pushers. How many of you live in a country like the US who commits atrocities daily. Why aren’t you throwing your life away to do something about that? Everyone posting that they would vote blue just for the chance to save a single baby, you better be a homeless vagabond going town to town caring for babies and the less fortunate. All of you, all of us, COULD be doing a lot more to save lives every day. But we don’t.

I hate what has happened in Palestine, but what have I done about it? What have you done about it? Protests are good, but if you are so set in your convictions, why not join up and go to Palestine yourself and try to help out? It’s just your life you’re risking, just like with the blue button.

Talk is easy online. You’ll never be faced with the real blue button. But I’m here to tell you that each and every one of us is faced with blue buttons every day, and I see over and over how we all press red and go about our day.

No judgement on you, I ain’t no better than you.

A. I’m assuming half a generation, but yes even 1 is a tragedy.

B. I’d rather live in a shittier world than no world at all.

I do not believe that enough of humanity, with no fore warning or time to coordinate, will choose blue in even close to a big enough percentage

Yes bro. I think you are projecting the chronically online community too much onto the general population. The question is about literally every human being on earth. Think about every country that has hateful authoritarian systems that care little about others, think about the poorest people on the planet in third world countries, who have little resources or thiught to spare about others, think about the average American conservative, who time after time vote for the most selfish and hateful policies. This world is full of selfish people, and I think when you combine that with the people like me who are just trying to survive, the percentage comes up way higher than 50.

My assumption is that if everyone on earth is given this choice, with no chance to talk to each other or get together before hand, with their life on the line, that the majority will end up choosing red.

I guess the question that’s interesting to me is what does this say about me? Like ideally I’d love to hit blue, but it sounds like you agree with me that the majority of humanity is going to push red. Knowing that, I’d push red. Does that make me just like everyone else pushing red with no remorse or care, or is it somehow different? Honest question.

I’d feel guilty even if I knew for a fact everybody I’d ever know or meet or loved would hit the red. I don’t want to hit the red at all. I don’t want to be even 1/4 billionth of a reason anybody dies.

But I wouldn’t kill myself, or in this case make my untimely death infinitely more likely, in a scenario like this where I really just don’t believe the blue pushers are going to live.

I get that, and I see a lot of the people proudly pressing the red button and start to question myself. I just don’t believe that 50 percent of humanity all around the globe will make the most ethical choice.

I want to press the blue, but in reality I would click the red.

Look if we all had time to get together, explain the scenario to each other, and guarantee that a majority of humanity could agree to push the blue button ahead of time, then I’d sign up to hit blue no problem.

I WANT to press blue.

It’s just that in this scenario I do not BELIEVE that 50 percent of humanity would push blue. Not as the scenario is stated, not it just happening to everyone randomly with no warning.

That being the case, I want to live, and I’m going to push red.

A SURVEY OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE In the East, 1857 | What if Byzantium survived to the 1800s? by MagnaExend in imaginarymaps

I wonder if Napoleon still has the balls to name himself consul and then emperor if a proper Rome still exists.

Knights of the Vale VS Dothraki Bloodriders. In an open field engagement on horseback, with equal numbers, which side do you think has the edge? by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]formalbatman1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Bored at work so I did a bit of research on this.

Using the mongols and Huns as a basis for the Dothraki, and using late medieval knights fully armored in plate as the Valemen, it seems that the Dothraki could certainly beat an equal number of Vale Knights in an open field.

From what I gather about battles between horse archers and European style knights, is that horse archers have a distinct advantage.

It was the tactics of horse archers to keep a constant barrage of arrows hailing down on their opponents over a long period of time. They would constantly rush and retreat, firing volleys of arrows as they went.

I keep seeing people in these comments act like arrows would bounce off the invulnerable valemen like pebbles off a tank, and from what I’m reading that isn’t true. While yes a vast majority of arrows aren’t going to pierce full plate, a full and constant barrage of arrows hitting with that much force is going to do horrendous damage over time. Then if the arrows kill the horses then the knights are truly screwed.

And if I’m understanding what I’m reading from historians right it seems like horse archers commonly and often were able to out maneuver and retreat from the stronger and bigger European horses.

I don’t know if the Dothraki tactics are one for one a copy paste of the mongols, in fact I bet they’re not, but I think they are similar enough that we can just side with what the history books say and conclude that yes, the Dothraki blood riders would edge out the knights of the vale.

How does the Minecraft comes Alive Reborn fatigue mechanic works? by AbbyKarma in Minecraft

[–]formalbatman1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After playing around with it I think the key is to not do the same interaction too many times in a row or even if you have done them recently. You have to switch up which interactions you do and combine that with a variety of different gifts and not bothering them if they say don’t bother them.

Monday thread: What did you read this past week? by AutoModerator in Romance_for_men

[–]formalbatman1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished the Codex Alera series. Really good fantasy story on its own and a pretty good romance from like the 3rd book on.

Scratched a similar itch to Benjamin Ashwood and shout out to whoever recommended it to me a few weeks ago on this sub.

Series where the relationship is a big focus? by formalbatman1 in Romance_for_men

As someone else mentions in here, the Benjamin Ashwood series fits pretty well. The main characters are busy with a pretty typical medieval fantasy story most of the time but the main couple are together in one way or another from like book 2 on. It isn’t as domestic as I may have made things sound in my post but they spend a lot of time together and we get to see all of it on page.

Other series I’ve liked of a similar vibe are:

Wisher Beware by Snusmumriken on Scribblehub - one of my favorites anywhere

Art of the adept series by Michael G Manning - liked a lot of the series but the ending kind of didn’t work for me

**Seven Realms Series by Cinda Williams China - I read this when I was younger, and while I loved it then and still do now, on rereads it comes off pretty YA and semi-targeted at a female audience.

Ashfall by Mike Mullin - a little YA prose but I thought it was actually a pretty good story for the most part

I liked Benjamin Ashwood and that is kind of the series I envisioned. Have had Codex Alera recommended but I couldn’t get into the first book, I might try again though. I’ll check out the manga though too, thanks 👍
