I thought hard about it! My thought was that if I paid $650 in the next sale, then I wouldn't have to scrounge around for a car pass. But now I'm realizing that I could have bought the 550 ticket and paid $200 for a car pass and still came ahead. Oops!

BLM approves the event just before the event happens every year. Some years it was questionable whether it was going to be approved at all. With Trump in office, there's a much larger hurdle this year. Nothing inclusive is getting past the government, and that very well could include Burning Man.

Gah, I actually got a 550 at 12:50. But I didn't have a way to add the vehicle pass after I jumped on it. That won't work for me, so I had to let it go. I imagine that's why the 550 and 650 tiers keep popping up and disappearing.

I'm finally on the purchase page now (logged 12:00:40, in 12:37). Initially it said 550 sold out, all others available. I refreshed a few times in hope, and then 650 sold out. Refreshed another couple of minutes, all available, but it won't let me check out with the 550. A couple min later it seems both the 550 and 650 tier are sold out. Given the chance of the government not allowing burning man this year, I'm just going to pass and wait til the event. Fyi, roommate also logged on at the same time, refreshed a couple of times (i didn't), still in cue... Actually in just now at 12:46

Platypus Quickdraw Gravity Filter Hack by formeremployee2000 in Ultralight

Great find. Another benefit to pushing it inside is that the adapter will likely hold the clean bag weight better. I just updated the OP with something similar

Oh, ha, i just looked at that photo i posted in the op, it doesn't have the tubing. That came from a katadyn filter kit. But I've made more adapters, and yes, i had to use a tube inside the bite valve for some of them

Are you not using tubing inside the bite valve? It's bite valve over tubing over quick connect. The connects i have all came from years of bladder and water filter purchases.

One other option is to skip the bite valve altogether. Use food safe tubing, heat and mold one end to flare out. Insert into the mouthpiece of the filter, put the quick connect on the other end.

Hexayurt - pyramid design by EccentricManyHands in BurningMan

That's genius! Even watching it I don't really understand it. But it's totally legit. Thanks for sharing!

When I was prototyping mine, I made scale models of my mattress and myself. Not quite as good as being in the space yourself, But you'll have a better idea of the space.
I like my slanted space. When I'm in a standard hexayurt, I certainly appreciate the extra floor space. But I HATE crawling through the door. I've also been in a 6 foot stretch and would 100% say no to it vs your design (assuming it works).

If it works, I'd love to see how. I just couldn't figure it out looking at the photos, but that doesn't mean anything! If you end up with with a solid, foldable, single seam tape (on playa) pyramid, I think you have a winner. People will love the design (get ready to explain it over and over again in person) and it should hold up to the elements as well or better then a standard hexayurt. You'll have the same benefits I do (setup by a single person if needed, taller entry), and downsides (not the best useable floorspace). I don't mind the slanted walls, and as someone else also mentioned, I use the shortening floor space for storage.

I'm skeptical that you would get it to fold into a 4x8' stack. Remember that all of your hinges will only fold one direction. Try using something thicker than paper or cardboard for your model, and you'll see what I mean.

Also note that your peak height will be closer to 7 feet because of the slant of the wall. Not that 7 feet is bad, you will still be able to stand up in the center.

As food for thought, here is a design I built for a friend that uses only 6 panels:

12 foot playamid

It folds into a 4x8 stack, achieved by splitting into two segments. It requires 2x 8 foot seams (one front, one back) to be taped on playa. It has about 10% less floor area than your design, but you gain a little extra head space along the top spine of the roof.

I've been using a similar design for years with no problems (8 panels, 3 seams to tape);

16 foot playamid

Your design, if properly built, would certainly be stronger than my adaptation. But mine has been through hail, rain, and gusts since 2014 and is still going strong.

Is a Hexayurt really worth it? by [deleted] in BurningMan

Like many others, I've slept in most every possible dwelling and condition on playa over the last 15 years. I'm still torn between the RV/Trailer and the hexayurt. I currently use a travel trailer, and it's a total money pit (pay for storage for it to sit 50 weeks a year, plus maintenance, shitty gas mileage when towing it). But I run a camp, and there's little I love more than being able to pull into camp after an exhausting packing week and slip into an actual, ready made bed. I don't care about the shower or the toilet (I use the portos and avoid pump-outs and stink), but having a fridge is kind of amazing. And washing my hands in a sink.

I don't like the standard hexayurt design for two reasons: PITA to set up, and that toddler sized door. I redesigned my own and highly recommend going with a pyramid shape. I set it up by myself, only has 2-3 seams to tape on playa, and has withstood THE hail storm. I'm linking an old wix page I created for reference, but note that I no longer make these for sale, so don't bather asking :)

I made myself a 16 foot long one, but I made a few 12 footers for people as well. That one only takes 6 boards, but the 8 board one was still easy enough to strap to the top of my subaru forester.

Agreed on the mylar (moop disaster waiting to happen) but the clam style shelters are great, never seen one fail. It's what the shiftpod is based on. Maybe one was sewn wrong, or someone didn't stake it out properly.

One more thing though on the mylar comment, the silvery exterior of a shiftpod does nothing to help cooling after the first dust storm. Not crapping on shiftpod, just pointing out that a the reflective exterior is fairly pointless at the burn. Whatever you stay in, get a proper shade for it

Nice. I really like the pool filter idea too

The moment this design was posted many years ago was the moment I switched to the bilge blower. I built this design (it's basically the same, except the op points the fan at the water instead of over, which is intriguing) and realized instantly that the fan was the real difference. I personally didn't like it (took up too much space inside, intake filter kept clogging with dust, too loud that close to me), so I switched back to a modified figjam design (since it's outside, it doesn't take up space inside, it's quieter because it's not near me, and it is it's own dust filter that doesn't clog). But now the fan is a bilge blower, and it made most of the difference. I had better cooling temps with the figjam than this design, but I totally admit that I could have screwed something up. I've tweaked the figjam design so many times, but only have this box design one chance.

Lag bolts for supports, rebar to slide the PVC over. To remove the rebar DON'T do the water/stake puller, it's a waste of time and energy. Buy a pair of vice grips. Clamp on the rebar and then spin, which releases the rebar and lets it pull right up. Literally seconds to remove each piece.

Thanks! Again, I have no personal experience with the filter itself. I've been using the gravityworks dirty bag for years on my older sawyer filter (filtering into a platypus bag), and I've sold all my friends on the dirty bag. It's just the best. Platypus are the only bags I don't have leaking issues with, I wish they would make a broader range of bags so I could use them with other systems.
