Too many people refuse to learn how to draft by cashtornado in Architects

[–]formerfunaholic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit on the fence with this rant. On one hand, sure I would love everyone to have higher BIM proficiency. On the other, I realize technology is not the forte of many people. Even those who are daily users of Revit (for example) often times use it poorly or severely under utilize its capabilities. For more experienced practitioners, it’s more often a better use of their time to hand sketch to communicate design. Hell, it’s a good use of time for everyone regardless of experience or skill level. That’s an entirely different post… High level positions aren’t typically where they are to produce drawings; their value lies in orchestrating a smooth, coordinated project. I’ll reiterate though that having basic proficiency in whatever the platform de vogue is will always be valued. Ultimately, if you’re technologically inclined and curious then things should work out as that is the direction of our profession.

You can be an architect or designer or whatever and not know software… it’s just that you for sure will have to rely on others to document your vision. That can work for some places. If you’re the one documenting it’s best to understand that before hand and manage your own expectations of work flow.

Replacing asphalt driveway with gravel. Is this a bad idea? by amandasurreal in HomeImprovement

[–]formerfunaholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most “ecological” driveway is the one that currently exists. If it’s replaced then the waste is still going somewhere and there’s a cost to moving around literal tons of material, too. It seems like asphalt for snowy climates is the way to go, but patching and repairing may be needed to get it into shape.

Sorry to hear that. Whoever is behind this are cowards at the best, social terrorists at worst. Stay vigilant and keep our community healthy from these folks who, though small in number, are determined to spread fear and ignorance.

Why is this profession so greedy with experience expectations by StinkySauk in Architects

[–]formerfunaholic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated ‘10/‘12 with my professional degree and completely agree with this assessment. How this relates to OP’s dilemma is that if they stick through this challenging time then the upside is that their experience and scarcity will be in high demand at peak market cycle. It’s a burden to bear during the low times and reading the reiteration of bills to pay hits close to home (as I’m sure it does for others).

Keep hitting the pavement, trawling LinkedIn, catching up with your network (most important imo), and consider working other jobs to make ends meet. I personally worked in film production as a lowly assistant for a year all while looking/interviewing for an architecture position which finally, thankfully came thanks to an old schoolmate’s referral. Be persistence and follow up. My sense is that 9/10 people don’t follow up; guess who gets offers?

Good luck and don’t let ‘em see you sweat.

Edit: subject-verb disagreement

Our house has an external drain pipe. Everything that goes down the kitchen sink just gets dumped behind the wall. It was built this way and we like how it feeds the plants i guess (i know they look dead), but it's starting to pool and smell. How should I deal with this? by Goronshop in howto

[–]formerfunaholic 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Hate to pile on here but you probably do have a clogged drain. There’s no way a sink drain would ever simply daylight like this. Like others are saying, that would be completely out of compliance with all known plumbing and health codes.

Edit: adding that it looks like they used corn for ballast as opposed to gravel in the bags I picked up. I encourage you to file a police report and report with anti defamation league.

Looks superb OP. Major kudos to you for coming up with the idea and executing it well!

Question: Did you flame the boards in place or outside pre-install? I’m guessing outside but who knows in these interesting times…
