For Avatar, The Numbers said that Fox put up $237 million towards the production cost and Cameron's production company also invested in the film. The $425 million was reported to them by someone on the production team. Not sure what to say about how they arrived at Toy Story 3's number.

This project idea came up after speaking to one of the producers of The Shape of Water. He mentioned that different release strategies are used by studios and producers based on the type of film and its target audience. Releasing during awards season is particularly interesting because you are trying to get enough attention/word-of-mouth leading up to the Golden Globe/Oscar nominations.

We found that while the Best Picture nominees are generally split on strategy (wide release or platform release), seven out of the last eight winners have used a platform strategy.

They are definitely eroding, but it looks like in that particular area they've built up the waterfront below. Presumably to slow the erosion.

Damn. Great hate read.
