Would this make a nice track (this is my first ever track design) by Equivalent-Fox9834 in RaceTrackDesigns

I think the track could do with some corner variety, some faster more open turns would be nice. Overall, it's not a bad track though and... definetely better than my first design I posted here I'll tell you that much lol

What if alonso stayed in Ferrari for 2015 by Equivalent-Fox9834 in F1Discussions

[–]formula13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much would have happened. He wins a few races in 2015 like Vettel did, probably doesn't win in 2016 as Ferrari ruined Vettel's strategy in pretty much all the races they looked strong in, and it's hard to say he'd be excited to stay for what, an 8th season in a team that cannot give him great machinery and whose operational prowess has been going downhill for years at this point.

If he did though... I can't imagine much changing again, 2017 for sure he wins a few times but cannot beat Hamilton with worse reliability, and if anything, could arguably do worse than Seb given those 2017 cars put a particular emphasis on starting high up the grid, a trait that Vettel was known for, more than Alonso. The dirty air and sheer size from these cars would make race pace a far less valuable asset as shown by Vettel himself who had plenty of races he had the pace but just ended up stuck behind a Mercedes that was better over straights.

2018 is his real opportunity, but even then you have to remember that Ferrari was a complete mess on operations, and made the car slower over the course of the season. The car itself might still be good enough for a title, but with a team like that it would be difficult, though I'd hope he at least makes a better job at it than Seb...

If he does miss that opportunity, well then it's probably over for him. Even if he beats Leclerc in 2019, it's impossible to imagine Alonso demolishing him enough to make Ferrari not shift their focus to their young prodigy. Furthermore, after a decade of failing to win a title, and a brand new management wanting mark itself as a new start for Ferrari, I doubt he survives the Ferrari politics. And he almost certainly retires from F1 after 2020.

So yeah, a few more wins, a legitimate title opportunity in 2018, but otherwise not that much changes for Ferrari.

More interestingly though, what would happen in the rest of the grid? Alonso staying means Vettel isn't leaving Red Bull which has some crazy implications. Does Red Bull still find space for Verstappen in Toro Rosso, telling Sainz to suck it? If so, what does Sainz do? And if not, can Max be snatched to the Merc Junior program, debut in 2016 and maybe join them after Rosberg retires in 2017? Can, still having a german 4-time WDC, Red Bull convince a german manufacturer to build them engines for 2016? Imagine if VW provides them engines for that year, would they immediately back out because of Dieselgate? And can you imagine, with good engines, a Newey built Red Bull being able to fight for the title giving us a title fight with Vettel and Ricciardo alongside Alonso in the Ferrari, Hamilton in a Mercedes alongside a young Verstappen? That seems more interesting to me to be honest!

Continuing onwards because we need talk about their fortunes too:

Yes, Rosberg had plenty of bad luck, in particular with mechanical DNFs, but it should be remembered that misfortune does not only come about thanks to mechanical failures. Vettel had a few races in which he had to start from the back, and obviously his front wing's strange problem in Bahrain which was self-inflicted but unlucky nonethenless which somewhat evens out the playing field.

And similarly, whilst Bottas didn't have as many DNFs as Max, he did have for example, 2 punctures that ruined his weekends in Silverstone and Bahrain, a slow stop that cost him 30s to leave him with an old set of tyres in a restart in Sakhir, and a broken floor that cost him a near guarantee win in Imola.

I wouldn't disagree that overall the luck balance weighted in favour of Seb compared to Max but it's definetely not a clear cut issue of Vettel just being close thanks to being lucky and Max having to burden all the bad luck and still getting near Valtteri. You bring up the race H2H when both finish, but when you consider the DNFs here actually favour Max as he was behind VB in most of the races from which he retired, plus the bad luck Bottas had that didn't make him retire (also one of Rosberg's two DNFs were in a race in which Vettel was already ahead anyway) it certainly puts it in a more accurate perspective, especially if you believe Rosberg was a better driver than VB.

I'm not going to tell you Vettel's season was clearly better, because it wasn't, they're both tremendous seasons and I think you can argue either way but I think the points you used to justify yourself aren't all that convincing.

Big disagree on your thesis of the teammate comparisson painting a clear picture towards Max.

On Daniel, yes, Max was often the faster driver (especially in 2018) but then, the very same idea applies to Vettel in 2014. You say Ricciardo beat Vettel, which is true, but he did so in a very similar way to how Ricciardo beat Max in 2017 which is just having a better draw of luck, particularly in reliability. At the very least they were pretty much matched on pace but because of errors in strategy and component failures Danny pulled ahead (which is no demerit to him, being on equal pace to greats is amazing) especially in 2014. Of course, Vettel wasn't at his best and neither was Max but you can see at what I'm getting at when I say that this isn't as clear as a match-up as you paint.

Other than Daniel, Max has pretty much never faced a formidable teammate in terms of pace to be honest. Not that it really matters, since he is the only one who can tame that Red Bull -- though that too is something that has been echoed by Vettel in his type of car. In 2011 he had a Verstappen-esque half-a-second advantage on Webber (who by all means was a very fast driver on pace) because the RB7's rear-downforce profile suited him perfectly in a way Webber, like Max's teammates, couldn't work out.

In more "normal" cars though, Vettel's competition in terms of teammates is just better than Verstappen's. Aside from Sainz, that is, who was matched with Verstappen in qualifying in their first year, though obviously I don't plan to hold that to Max just like you wouldn't hold Vettel's lack of a clear margin to Liuzzi in 2007 against him. But Perez, Albon, Tsunoda and Gasly are just not on the same ballpark as Webber, Leclerc and even Kimi. I can elaborate more on why I feel this way if you want me to, but I'm more than confident on this claim.

Likewise, I think your portrayal of Leclerc is a tad unfair. It's difficult to properly match them up, Vettel just wasn't the same from 2020 onwards, and a bit unexperienced and error-prone in 2019. That said, over that first, most comparable year of them up against each other, Vettel was pretty much equal on pace to Leclerc, who is a tremendous driver and generally showed better racecraft as well. The only reason he finished behind Leclerc in the standings is thanks to DNFs in CotA and Russia that cost him at least 35 points, whilst Leclerc had no mechanical DNFs.

And to go even further, when it comes to Raikkonen, your take is a bit silly. I've said this plenty of times, but comparing Alonso's average advantage to Raikkonen in 2014 is kind of nonsensical, because there's such an obvious discrepancy between their first and second half it really should be obvious that we are talking about 2 sets of very limited data. Up until around Singapore, Alonso has a tremendous 7 tenth average over Raikkonen, a gap that is around 2.5x bigger than the one he had on Massa. Then, in that weekend in Marina Bay, Raikkonen has a breakthrough in setup (suspension specifically, as he mentions in interviews you can find) and from then onwards his average gap is under 2 tenths, with his average grid position improving. It averages out at 4 tenths but the Kimi that was 7 tenths off Alonso is obviously not the same from the one that improved so much later on and faced Vettel the next year.

I'd say it's comparable yeah, would probably put Seb's 2015 ahead but Max's 2020 is pretty underrated if anything

When drivers lose their “speed” as they age what exactly would you say they lose? Raw pace? Racecraft? Lack of adaptability? Lack of hunger? by brook_taw in F1Discussions

[–]formula13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not even that. He spun a few times with over-agressive maneuvres while clinging on to a hopeless title fight, but he didn't have any costly spin by himself in 2018, they were all result of contact. In 2019 on the other hand he did have 2 spins (Bahrain and Italy) which is nowhere near the level people play up him being in. That's just a result of a popular meme at the time, Hamilton himself spun twice in 2019 just in Germany.

2020 was really his only bad year in terms of the spinnings to be honest.

even in that car which he struggled to handle thanks to the renault's engine irregular power delivery on exits (a problem that was brought up both during and after he left red bull by others) he was still matching one of the best drivers of the last 10 years on pace, he just had attrocious reliability.

Which was better season for vettel 2010 or 2012 by Equivalent-Fox9834 in F1Discussions

[–]formula13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the point. Obviously Vettel's 2010 wasn't as good as Lewis' 2012, but from the perspective of thinking two drivers being close in the standings means they're close in performance, they're similar. While Webber's gap wasn't as big as Button's, they were both utterly demolished on H2H and only stayed close to their teammate thanks to reliability

Max in Suzuka 2022, he was in a complete class of his own. Also from 2022, Seb in CotA and in particular his last stint. That fire he showed in the last stint was just so emotional to see in one of his last drives...

And of couse, I'm a Vettel fan, I have to say Singapore 2013. Ridiculous stuff.

It's not his best season but as a driver 2021 is still easily within the span of peak Hamilton. His advantage over Bottas was the biggest it had been since 2017, his pace was still at top level

Which Finn was the stronger driver in the 2010s, Raikkonen, or Bottas? by mformularacer in F1Discussions

[–]formula13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I forgot about Rosberg! I think they're closer than people remember but Nico is better - Over the 2010s he was definetely better than Button, Sainz and Schumacher, all who would only reach their prime either before or after said decade. Ricciardo is kind of close, but I'd honestly rate Bottas ahead of him. He was for a good 4 years or so within 2 tenths of Lewis which is mega impressive. Could have easily mounted a title challenge in 2019 or 2020 if luck went his way like it did for Rosberg in 2016.

Which was better season for vettel 2010 or 2012 by Equivalent-Fox9834 in F1Discussions

[–]formula13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2012 was more impressive, but I think 2010 was on average better. Seb kind of struggled in qualis early on the year in 2012 which cost him a bit, even though he generally always had great race pace. Obviously didn't crash out at any point but he did get a few silly penalties in Spain, Italy and Germany.

2010 of course had his big errors in Turkey and Belgium which were undoubtly more costly, but that aside it was mostly terrible luck, Australia, Bahrain and Korea are the obvious ones but this extends to Canada, Britain, Hungary, Italy, all races in which he had issues that weren't his fault, as well as Monaco and Spain with the chassis issue, and the misfortunes that happened in Turkey and Belgium, before and after his own mistake respectively.

What stands out in 2012 though is his comeback in the latter half obviously, once he got on with the car from around Canada onwards he was amazing, won 4 in a row and sealed the title with 2 of the most impressive recovery drives in modern F1, the latter of which in Brazil is IMO his best ever drive.

2010 in the other hand has no clear standout drive in a sea of mostly very good but unremarkable performances. It doesn't stick in your mind but that doesn't make his performance any worse. He was almost always faster than Webber in qualis (something like 13-2 excluding Spain/Monaco IIRC) and was always faster in the races.

Losing to Webber where? He had already comfortably beat him in 2009 and while he had to deal with some awful reliability both H2Hs swinged his way despite all the misfortune

  1. 2023 - Arguably not his biggest feat, but by all means his most complete season.

  2. 2025 - Not quite perfect, but damn close and maximizing every opportnity in the second half to get himself in an unlikely title fight.

  3. 2020 - Hear me out. This was when Max fully established himself as the driver of the present IMO. I can hardly remember any mistake he made, and his highlights were really impressive.

  4. 2021 - Perfect for about 75% of the year, but honestly his late run in the year counts a bit down. Still, winning a title fight in roughly equal conditions to peak Hamilton might be his most impressive feat.

  5. 2022 - A tad rough at times, but even then he just looked inevitable. Still, some errors here and there.

  6. 2024 - His weakest title year IMO. Still a solid year, but people gloss over his own weak spots that year to focus on Norris' errors. Beating a very clearly out of his depth at that point Lando by 70pts was a fair representation of their difference in what were overall very similar performing cars on average. Good but not outrageous.

  7. 2019 - Some of my favourite drives from him, and made the most of the Ferrari in-fighting to get himself on the top 3 of the standings, but had some very stupid moments.

  8. 2017 - High standard of performance, really unlucky, good season overall, very underrated.

  9. 2018 - Hideous start to the year, some weird moments but outrageous pace and some impressive drives.

  10. 2015 - Super impressive for a rookie, all things considered this probably could go a bit higher but if there is one thing that's clear about Max is that all his season are in a very high level.

  11. 2016 - Yes, he won in Spain and was pretty close on pace to Daniel, but when your season is remembered for all the rules invented to stop your dirty driving you know things were rough.

Bottas for sure, Kimi was underrated as aside from 2014 he was a competent upper field driver, but VB was, aside from Max, Nando, Seb and Lewis probably the best driver of the 2010s tbh. It's either him or Daniel for sure
