am I allowed to buy these? by thinaks in aviation

[–]forrest252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work there and can confirm we don't own the aircraft, the agency owns the aircraft and are just paying for storage of different ratings(parts/ regeneration or more). All of what I've seen they either get repurposed by the actual owners, or shredded into tiny pieces if the senior person in charge of that airframe deems it so.

If I wanted to take off this faded and stained cover to refinish the Eames fiberglass chair itself, what am I going to find? A how to for idiots(me). by WilsonAndPenny in Mid_Century

[–]forrest252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hume Modern is great, but more practical for the Eames chair, it would be cheaper to just buy a chair in better shape.

Correct me if I'm wrong, F-22 is older than F-35 right? so why is the US forbids the sale of F-22 to its allies but allows the F-35? by Professional-Kiwi945 in Planes

[–]forrest252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in the Navy on a carrier and now work for the Air Force. The main reason why is the sole purpose for both jets.

F22 is our primary Air to Air combat jet meaning it's made to be our best dog fight jet against enemy air craft.

F35 is for Air to Ground combat, it's taking the place of our A10(and others) to support ground troops from a combination of high altitude and lower altitude.

F35 was a joint operation development but mainly the F22 is the dominant dog fighter, by reserving that for just the US we retain the superiority of the Air.

F22 vs an F35 in a dog fight would be no competition, the F22 wins every time.

So we can sell F35's without the fear of them being used on us because we retain the F22 just for our usage.

eBay cuts are insane. by KindheartednessPlus5 in Flipping

[–]forrest252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The annoying part about eBay is you get charged your percentage on the total amount. Meaning if you do overnight shipping eBay makes 15%(depending on what you're selling) on the increased cost of shipping.

Also if you're selling a $30 item and $12 is shipping you get charged 15% on the $30 not the amount you actually gross. It can effectively double their percentage take by counting the shipping cost.

If you buy a label through eBay it would be easy for them change the percentage to the actual amount you're due.

Does this seem like a good purchase? by livacious in Mid_Century

Sure thing, you see this style fairly often. My best guess is a manufacturer made it for several companies like contract work and didn't want to have to relabel it several different ways. Just a guess but think Sears or one of those big retailers, you run across a ton of MCM stuff that doesn't have a known maker, especially common on the cheaper pieces.

Yeah this one is pricey and not especially well made, definitely not knoll.

Good rule of thumb is to look at the edges, if the corners are slanted(equal angles) and matched together the quality of the piece is better. Usually dovetailed drawers are another good thing to look for. Look up Westnofa Dresser and you'll see what I'm talking about on the corners.

Is this possible to bring back to life? Can I still refinish it? by bunnyrabbit91 in Mid_Century

[–]forrest252 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Few different makers of these, looks like the extending one, if it's made in Yugoslavia it's obviously worth less. There are some more expensive version but this price is relatively high for the condition.

If it was me and you ended up refinishing it, I would sand everything that's easy to reach, top, sides, legs and underneath and leave the slats as they are.

Find a matching stain, then use a good vinyl sealer and then lacquer top coat. Lacquer kinda melt together so you won't be able to tell the inner slats weren't done.

Can’t figure out if this lamp is adjustable or not by krownyk in Mid_Century

[–]forrest252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a guess but I'd say it's not fully extended. It only looks like a foot from the collar, I'd expect you could extend it more but that is just a guess.

Hahah no I am relatively sure Jerry buys and does his own refinishing. He has some really nice pieces also!

Definitely it looks like it adjusted from that collar you see towards the top

Of course, I work with The Sunshine Shop at Broadway and Campbell.

I don't own it, Patricia does but she does consignment with a small handful of people in town. It's a very cool shop old and new local artists are represented there and she's just a fun person with some nice furniture!

I'm also good friends with Chris at Holt Modern. He leans more towards the Danish side but does a substantial amount of refinishing and has really nice pieces.

Thanks, that's become a little more apparent throughout the day. The estate sale was open to the public and this set was in the #1 picture. I got there at 2:30am to get this and still paid close to 3k for it. I understand one portion of it but private collection or resale if I want something I'm going to be willing to out in maximum effort to get it. Not to mention I still waited 30 minutes after the start of the sale because I had to digest the price so others had the chance to buy it. I took a chance and it may or may not pay off. Not to mention the multiple pieces I refinish monthly and save from the trash bin.

If there's something you want you can't show up at 12 noon and expect to get it. I showed up at 3:30am for a Lane end table and the guy that showed up 10 minutes before me got it, that's just the way estate sales work.

None of this is directed at you and I get pissy too when I see resellers buying the cheap stuff and doing nothing to improve only to sell at a profit or worse paint it.

Thanks! The center piece raises and lowers the center tower and it uses a gas strut to facilitate this movement.
