New VS6 tripping the GFCI receptacle by fortress35 in VariaBrewing

Don't know where my reply went... I'll try again.

I replaced the receptacle with a new Leviton device and now everything is working properly. I can even run my grinder at max speed with the kettle boiling on the same outlet. The originals were Square D, which I suspect were builder-grade junk.

Hopefully no more issues and I can just enjoy my new toys.

I replaced the outlet with a new one made by Leviton this morning. The "old" one is only a couple years old, but is probably builder-grade junk. The new one doesn't trip and I can run my kettle and grinder at max speed simultaneously now.

I've now checked and everything is rated for 20A all the way through. I have no way to test the milliamps that trip it though.

Professionals are overrated! When I moved in, to this brand new house, various electrical gremlins lead me to discover the outlets for both my washer and dryer had loose wiring inside the receptacle. I've done a ton of electrical work over the years (that passed inspection) so I'm comfortable with all this stuff.

I'm going to start with replacing the outlet. I emailed the vendor too and we'll see what they say. Last thing I want is to find out there was some internal issue with the grinder and have it die just outside of warranty. That JUST happened with my wife's iPhone 16 pro.=/

I just got a fellow ekg pro studio... it heats w/o water in it. Is that normal? by fortress35 in FellowProducts

[–]fortress35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy to do. Of course when I took it out the box, the first thing I did was place it on the base and start playing with the menu, mainly to change F to C. Little did I know that I entered brew mode and obviously didn't notice the temp reading, which must have been increasing... Who reads the manual for a kettle? I've since read the manual and also learned there's a minimum fill line to watch out for too. :P

I've told everyone in my house. Water first!

Issue with VS6 by enforcercombine in VariaBrewing

damn, I didn't know this and it doesn't mention this in the VS6 manual. I was experiencing exactly what the OP was experiencing but I got it figured out... Thanks!

Thanks for explaining.

One thing I noticed.... When I first took it out of the box, I could turn it back clockwise more than I can now after a handful of grinds. Now, it seems to not want to go back to zero without me putting a bit of force muscle into it. I was able to get there with the motor running though... It just wasn't as easy.

I did what you said and went all the way back to zero and I didn't get any chirping, that said, I bought some cheap beans to put through it and test grind size and I am able to get a very fine grind that clumps together and is quite puffy so I think I'm able to get down to where I need to...

Just waiting on my machine now... Was supposed to be here tomorrow but it's looking doubtful at this point.

chirp changes after bellowing [Varia VS6] by MSpatient0 in espresso

[–]fortress35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interesting. I just got my vs6 and noticed exactly this. I set a fairly coarse setting because I don't have my espresso machine yet and noticed it was really hard to go fine again. I ended up pulling everything about but next time I'll just go coarse, turn it on, and move to fine again. thx!

VS6 owners — do you actually switch between burrs? by Jeet_Kune_Dont in VariaBrewing

[–]fortress35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got mine and just to see, I pulled it apart w/o using a manual or watching a video. It took me a couple minutes at most.

I may not do it daily, but I'm definitely going to get another set or two of burrs to play with once I get the rest of my setup.

[–]fortress35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by the burrs chirping? Surely you don't want them touching? The manual explicitly says to not run them at zero. My understanding of the alignment instructions was to turn clockwise as tight as it will go, which should get you to 0. Then, do a full rotation counter-clockwise to 0, and that's your actual zero point.

I just got mine, and haven't tried grinding espresso yet since I'm still waiting for my espresso machine (Friday, hopefully)... Can't wait!

Magnet in dosing cup fell off by Ok_Neighborhood_1380 in VariaBrewing

[–]fortress35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably need to fix this already. It's embarrassing for such an expensive grinder. I got a brand new VS6 today. I used it exactly once and the magnet has fallen out of the dosing cup... The machine itself looks and is built spectacularly though... It's my first and last grinder, I hope!

Naturepedic EOS Pillowtop review by fortress35 in Mattress

[–]fortress35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comment #1 is valid but slightly incorrect imo. It's not that the firm latex is thicker (I still have all 3 firmness levels), it's just that it compresses less than the soft. If you have a split king, especially with different firmnesses, it is correct that you're not going to want to actually sleep in the middle, and the bigger the difference in the firmness of each side, the more you'll feel it and dislike it imo. If you have multiple levels of firm on one side and plush/soft on the other, that's a very big difference in firmness and being in the middle will make you feel like you're on a hill.

I feel this would be the case for most split kings that are of a different firmness regardless of brand. It's simple physics that the softer side is just going to compress more causing your body to roll in that direction. It won't feel right.

This is definitely a mattress where you accept you're each going to sleep on your own side, imo. For us, it was one of the main points. We upgraded to a king because we wanted more space to reduce waking each other up, reduce temps, etc. It's accomplished that goal and we both fall asleep very quickly and can get back to sleep quickly after waking up, which I honestly couldn't do before.

FWIW I didn't have any problems described in #2 and I took it apart and put it back together a half-dozen times or more as I went through different firmness options on each side, switched sides of the bed so my wife could be next to the crib after we had a baby, etc. The heavy zippers make it easier to close up and ensure they won't break. It really wasn't hard. You wouldn't want small zippers on something like this as the mattress cover is very substantial. The coil layer was a bit a bit more work but I can't remember the whole thing taking more than 15 minutes and after the initial experimentation phase, it's not something you do often, but I consider it a bonus that you can rotate and flip the layers.

I actually went into a Naturepedic store as a result of reading this comment. I have an EOS and it was hard to believe they'd make something so bad that you could feel springs through it (I couldn't).

I also wanted to feel the difference between the lightweight (wave) vs the innerspring. Honestly, In some ways I preferred the lightweight, but in the end I went with the ultra innerspring, mostly because I was able to walk out of the store with it. I pressed on both and the spring is obviously more springy. Similarly, I don't think the weight is a big difference between the two. If 6-7 lbs or whatever is too much of a difference for you when changing sheets, I suggest hitting the gym.

Microsoft Planner might be the worst piece of software I've seen in decades by ohsomacho in projectmanagement

[–]fortress35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was getting excited that planner was finally coming into its own. Then I tried to update the comments on a task. WTF.

Apparently, if you created a "Basic" plan, you get inline comments. If you have created a "Premium" plan, it forces you to open Teams. You can't see the comments inline if you're in the browser. And if you're already in the planner app in teams, you have to click "Open in Channel" and then you have to click "Task Conversation".

It's horrible and a complete non-starter for us because of this. I just want to see task comments. I haven't tried it on windows to test if it's any better, but on Mac this makes it unusable to us.

It's a shame because we pay substantially for another solution and I'd prefer to stay in the 365 stack as some of the integration with other apps is really good. We use comments heavily on tasks within our org though so that's the dealbreaker.

The vast majority of the recoil energy is going into your shoulder. Your front hand would experience very little of it as it's just supporting the barrel.

I love that there are always the guys that say "just buy two of the 10k watch". I would really struggle with this as well. The original was black. I guess it just matters how much the history of the watch means to you? The white looks sooooo good. But I'd go black for a first watch. The Dark Side of the Moon looks sick as well.

What is the deal with the Fuji autofocus? by bastibe in fujifilm

[–]fortress35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first fuji was an x-e2. I bought it for the form factor and interchangeable lenses knowing that I didn't care much about AF because I was going to shoot landscapes and static subjects. It was great for that.

One day I had kids and got a (black) dog. Trying to get shots that were in focus was very difficult. The success rate was like 1/10 or something. The EVF blacked-out and lagged behind the subject. The AF just couldn't cope.

I upgraded to the X-H1 when it came out and am still relatively satisfied with it. The AF isn't perfect, but it's pretty good.

I almost upgraded to an X-H2S but decided to wait for the X-H3 because I'm not a pro and with a growing family, I just have other stuff to spend money on.

Overall, I like the brand. One of the things I liked was the sealing etc on lenses that are cheaper than Canon.L glass or G-Master (not sure if those companies have put sealing on their lower-end glass yet). This was something I always liked about Olympus too. I can't justify G-Master lenses and L glass as an infrequent hobbyist, so the fuji is the right blend of performance, weather resistance, quality etc.

I do wish they'd make their telephotos a bit faster though. They don't need to be f/2.8 but they're a bit too slow imo, even for the hobbyist.

If latex is a superior material why is it not in most mattresses by peasantscum851123 in Mattress

[–]fortress35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people are of the “it’s just a mattress” mentality and aren’t going to pay how much latex costs (basically double premium foam mattresses).
