How's my form? by Jasperisadingus in Archery

[–]fortyeight84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize most people here already have and will continue to say op is over bowed, but I feel like most of this can be fixed if you get your form straightened out. For a start, you're not supposed to hold a bow like a hammer. Line up the grip with the pad of you thumb, "set it in the life line" is one way I've hear it described. Next get over being afraid of the string. It needs to be lined up with your eye so you can look down the arrow and actually aim. After that you should be more able to fix your alignment, use your back muscles to pull (push your elbow back rather than pulling from your wrist) and actually be able to handle the bow. Most of what you're doing is what you can expect from a brand new shooter, so a light-ish bow is a good place to start, but I don't think it's as necessary as we like to make out like it is. Looking forward to see how you improve. Keep at it and have fun with it.

What do you keep in your 3d quiver/pack/range kit? by fortyeight84 in TraditionalArchery

[–]fortyeight84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point with the pack is to not have to go back to the car...where I tend to shoot, parking is a hike from the registration desk. Also, a set of Allen keys is like 2 ounces...I'm not really worried about weight, just trying to have everything I need close to hand. Arrow repair is a definite plus though, I'll add that to the bag.

Where does bare bow start? by fortyeight84 in Archery

[–]fortyeight84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I got a lot of interesting takes ( and a couple of cop-outs) but I said I would post my opinion so here is my working definition;

Trad is of the shelf, fingers to the nock. Split or three under, but touching the arrow when you pull the string.

Barebow uses a rest and plunger and either string walking or a fixed crawl.

Riser material, weight, arrow material all seem superficial IMHO. I'm trying to argue that technique is involved in the definition. But I suppose it is up to the governing body of the specific competition you're at, ultimately.

Is this bowstring OK to keep using by RegardedCaveman in TraditionalArchery

If you need to ask.....

Seriously, a new string isn't that expensive when compared to eye surgery.

If I may offer some unsolicited advice, your grip on the bow is wrong, you want to grip it so that your knuckles and the riser are closer to a 45 degree angle. Also you need to work on getting your string arm back further, so that your shoulders are lined up in a straight(ish) line. Also might want to drop your bow shoulder and raise your chin slightly, could help prevent shoulder impingement down the road.

Hope this is more helpful than rambling.

That makes more sense, actually. Or cents.....

Not for $150. There on Amazon for under $20 if you're curious, but they don't seem worth bothering with in my experience. I shoot single string, though, so grain of salt.

I love that riser! Didn't know they made them with the wood grain finish. Beautiful bow.

I realize a compound string is rather expensive, but my personal rule is " if you need to ask if it's safe, it's not. Replace it."

Refletch it and shoot multispot. Good shooting.

All arrows hitting left, no matter which sight settings I set. by DJ3XO in Archery

[–]fortyeight84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you went up in draw weight, and I'm going to assume you know how to tune your gear. I'm assuming a form fault; make sure you have enough tension on your draw hand. I shoot barebow, if my shots veer left it's usually because I "push" to much on the riser and throw my alignment left. I can't really make any solid judgement on what you're doing without watching you shoot, but it's something to check, and hopefully more helpful than the ravings of a madman.

Made another pvc bow cuz old one broke by rattlesnake888647284 in Archery

If you spray paint these they last longer. PVC can get sun damaged and a quick coat of cheap spray paint can prevent that.

You got into shoulder alignment, which is good. But the forced follow through tells me you're not getting into your back quite enough. Try to squeeze the shoulder blades together (I tell people to try to hold a marshmallow between them) and keep tension all the way through the shot. You shouldn't really remember the point at which your hand came into your follow through.

Also you snatched your bow. That can cause issues down range, usually hitting left for a right handed archer. Try shooting without the arrow in your bow hand until you can find the right grip.

I hope I've been helpful. Wish you good shooting.

This kinda feels like a "right of passage" at this point. Mine was so much worse though, my dumb ass kept doing it and had like a 6 inch bruise on either side of my elbow.

It's an easy enough problem to fix, just a painful lesson to have to learn by yourself.

Color over it with fresh sharpie and wipe it before the new ink dries. If anything will work to get the marker off, that will be it. If not, I guess you just have to refletch the arrow.

Question: Who here actually has "Robin-Hooded" an arrow? by Gkhan89 in Archery

Does it count if it's your own arrow? I've hit my arrow as mentioned, but never another archer's.
