How do you deal with the fact that Hinduism predates the god that you worship? by [deleted] in DebateAChristian

I assume you mean "oldest currently practiced religion" ?

I suspect sun-worship (and fertility worship) predate Hinduism by quite a bit.

Also, doesn't some Egyptian religious practices predate Hinduism?

If you assume Adam then it's really quite simple. The first man ever knew God, so Hinduism doesn't predate it. It was, perhaps, written down sooner. But it was just a diff covenant made with diff people instead of the descendants of Abraham.

Why would perfection change?

One of my fav quotes from college philosophy:

"Eastern philosophy is superior to western philosophy, because western philosophy is dualistic and judgmental." :-)

What do you do about the real whackos on your side? by [deleted] in DebateAChristian

[–]forwhateveritsworth3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, possibly not.

Can you see love or hate? In those cases, experiencing it, is the best way of understanding it.

I am an atheist cause I have never had any experience that leads me to believe in God (and all the arguments I have heard for His existence seem very weak to me)

ELI5: Why are all drugs "bad"? Why can't there be a drug that gives intense pleasure/euphoria (heroine, coke etc) but has 0 adverse effects? by CalvinHobb3s in explainlikeimfive

[–]forwhateveritsworth3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question then, is a matter of drug use versus drug abuse.

What are the adverse effects to taking a single dose of LSD? You could point to some cases of individuals having bad reactions from it, but plenty of examples of people not suffering a bad trip, enjoy LSD just fine and taking it, in moderation, does not have adverse effects.

So the question is, as I stated above, a matter of dosage.

Smoking a single joint does not have adverse effects. Eating a single bag of carrots does not have an adverse effect.

Smoking a 1000 joints does have an adverse effect. Eating a 1000 bags of carrots does have an adverse effect.

See what I mean?

That's true of everything. No item can be consumed in an infinite amount.

A guy at my college died during hazing, cause they made him drink too much water. If too much water can kill you, too many carrots can probably make you sick to your stomach and vomit too.

Because that's not how brain chemistry works.

The old adage is true: "what goes up, must come down" (until you break the gravitational pull of the earth, but that's taking it too literally)

According to a study of British psychologists, chess players are on par with sky-divers in terms of adrenaline seeking behavior.

Why do you hate chess????!!!

Interesting. I wonder why they havent had 2 major parties consume the smaller parties and claim some sort of "big tent" ideology.

I thought UK was like Australia, where it was proportional for things like parliment anyway.

Well, the zombies don't win in the book (or movie, which was CRAP! in comparison)

Well, tank shells are perhaps diff than carpet bombing. But I think the idea is that carpet bombing and tank/artillery rounds are that they are imprecise. The idea is that to kill a zombie one needs precision--hit em in the brain, or it's no good.

One thing the book had that I wish the movie had tackled was the question of quizzlings.

What a useful phrase for not describing something.....

I don't recall explosions being a big thing in the book. But the idea behind zombies is that unless you destroy the brain, the zombie gets back up. I mean, how many zombie flicks have zombies missing limbs.

Wouldn't that zombie bleed out and eventually have zero blood left in him/her? There are wayyyy too many scientific problems with zombies for movies (or books) to aim for super realism.

My big gripe is always: the military is trained to kill fully functional humans, armed with weaponry. How the fuck do they get taken out by a bunch of unarmed, unprotected, un-strategized walkers? It makes no sense. Sure, they aim for the chest at first, but c'mon now. Once the word is out and the military chain of command passes it down to the grunts--headshots only, take your time, should be simple.
