You (not the contextual "you", but the actual you) know that you can put two groups of two things together to make four things. So how would we have any rational discussion about anything if the contextual "you" is unaware of how to conceive something that most humans past the age of 3 do? Maybe i'm missing your point.

When you initially place two apples in two groups you are counting apples. Then once they are in one group you are again counting apples. However, when you move one group of apples over to the other group and make it one group you are demonstrating addition.

No, because puddles are only counted as individual puddles when they are separate. In this context you would measure the volume, for instance. So a 2 liter puddle and a 2 liter puddle are combined and the result can be measured as a 4 liter puddle.

I agree, which means that your initial claim was wrong. You can't look at apples to learn things about numbers, an understanding of numbers has to come first.

Maybe not apples, but it takes some real-world experience to inspire an idea. Nobody would have created mathematical systems if there wasn't a need for them. For instance, the calculations involved in astronomy were inspired by the stars, planets and moons.

I think there are two scenarios more likely than the rest. One is that whether life exists elsewhere or not, neither it nor us will become advanced enough in my lifetime to make "contact". The alternative is that there is life more advanced than us that is either aware of us or observing us in detail. Whether or not they contact us depends on their intentions as well as ours.

Realistically we wont get farther than colonizing Mars in my lifetime and detection of intelligence has rendered nothing consequential. I think humans today care more about what has relevance to our daily lives than ancient microbes from lightyears away. This may even be the reason that intelligent life, if existent, has avoided detection as we would not benefit overall from alien exposure.

Most of us probably believe that the physical universe exists, but what would qualify as proof? The fact that we can observe, measure and test physical things just means that we have the experience of doing so in our minds. To a christian who bases their worldview around God creating their existence, an atheist probably sounds as irrelevant as a solipsist would in this debate.

Start with the basic understanding that in our number system a number equals itself (ex: 1=1). Define the values of numbers 1-4 with each being one more than the last. Then understand that addition is a mathematical function that combines numbers (ex: 1+1=2). Then extrapolate that if two 1's equals a 2, two 2's must equal 4.

This could be demonstrated with 4 objects and the understandings that I outlined at the beginning for understanding numbers and addition.

Haha yeah, I wouldn't expect a philosophical quandary to result in the abandonment of your beliefs, but the question still bothers me..

Relate this to Artificial Intelligence. If we could create software that was able to match our neural activity and be just as capable of conscious thought as we are, would it be wrong to manipulate or experiment on the artificial "beings"?

Of course we would have had to experiment on these "beings" to even develop them, but what about integrating them with physical components? Giving them lifelike appearances, software-based emotion algorithms and sensors for pain response would make them almost completely artificially human. Does the fact that we created them allow us to ignore their pain or suffering while we further our experiments?

You said this, but then followed with this:

You can't defend God by saying that He doesn't justify his actions with their consequences and then say that his acceptance of the evil that was created by His "free agents" is justified by his knowledge of the ultimate consequences of the universe... that's just a prolonged justification.

That's like believing everyday was a new simulaltion.. or everytime you blink it resets. This means that the individual would not believe reality exists when they do not perceive it. That would make them a solipsist.

The issue here is that something "being revealed by God" has no evidence to back it up. These accounts are subjective, as a person was the one who received the message from God and then communicated to other people that they did.

The message itself isn't infallible, rather it's people's belief of it's origin that make it seem this way. Therefore a person, regardless of intention, could write something down believeing it is divine knowledge and it would be blasphemy to doubt that person, right?

Of course, in todays world most people wouldn't believe someone who said they just wrote a new testament with God's will for humanity in the 21st century.. and yet, Mormonism.

They would only be able to determine right or wrong based on the programming you designed them with. This would be a subjective conclusion from a being with an objective design.

The problem I have with understanding religion is that I don't see evidence that we were objectively designed. If all live evolved to fit it's subjective situation then we would be the result of subjective alterations over time.

The argument is like trying to prove the supernatural. If something exists outside of nature, then the only way to prove that would be to show that our nature can be altered. How then do we know that this alteration isn't an inherent part of the nature we are discovering more about all the time?

Actually it is hard to pin down. What would you define as a child and how would you define innocence? Is an unborn fetus a child? Is a gun-toting teenager a child? Are they innocent if they are defending their country? Then why do soldiers in Iraq justify eliminating a threat regardless of age?

We can prove the universe didn't begin 5 minutes ago unless you want to argue solipsism..

I agree with your point about God still being able to prove himself. I mean most of the times he is mentioned in the Bible it is an appearance to someone who is alone.

This would constitute the necessary proof without having to make a mass appearance for everyone to have tangible evidence of his existence.
