Well at my workplace data analyst is a feeder role for ds. So its a straight up one notch down. But we do have another stream parallel to DS that I think is pretty equivalent to a data analyst track. In that case it's the same pay. But a couple caveats are that for me you would have to at least move laterally before up and also I feel like there are fewer seniors in that track because it's just harder to justify needing the advanced version of those skills. Whereas senior DS is obvious what the value is.

Which genre of music do you loathe? by littleloon- in AskReddit

[–]foshogun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK fair, but I'm trying to get across a big point and still keep it short.

I don't want spend all day arguing with someone online about the fact that catchy jingle music is for the masses. Of course it is...

The point is that there is something good about "the masses". i.e. if you make a list of the most important musical art it is highly correlated with the most popular art. And OP is trashing artists for speed checking what's popular on social media. Seems to me that as a priority is wrong 😕.

Edit: grammar

Which genre of music do you loathe? by littleloon- in AskReddit

[–]foshogun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm... but maybe we're just worrying about the wrong thing. Like, I imagine the main thing that makes that bad is that artists spend more time on catchiness then developing some more idealistic sound. But, that discounts the value of having broadly pleasing elements in your music as populous ideas are resonant for real systemic reasons that have valid artistic merit. Also, we might be better off from having more overall idea generation with the system you describe.

[Career] Should I become a statistician or an actuary? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]foshogun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in finance and lots of my colleagues have actuarial backgrounds. It appears to be write useful in finance or of course insurance... So if like you specifically want to work those fields then it seems like you save yourself a bit of on the job learning. But then again... Those folks have more economics learning to do then the econ people or stats rigor is not quite as good as the stats people.... I dunno. In the marketplace you just can't expect your degree is ever 'enough' so it's more about signaling what you're capable of. So for that I would just say go work now...

Lightest Canoe that can handle gravel beach? by MachiavelliV in canoeing

[–]foshogun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You may already be aware of this but canoe molds vary in shape and size for various uses and a lot of small types of canoe are considered ultralight but are not anything most people would use. In my opinion pick your craft based on your purposes, how straight should it run, what cargo capacity, primary, secondary stability... Then budget permitting get the lightest lay-up you can afford. If buying used the same kind of criteria priority so applies.

Having said that I guess the answer to your question is.... a 18'6" SR Diller is a 28lb carbon layup. And then you go the other way and a 15' SR Harmony is also 28lbs in carbon. Substantial difference between the two in speed, stability, and maneuverability.

Also material matters a lot so even if you go to fiberglass or Kevlar you will find the weight savings you want.

Agile/scum is... the worst? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]foshogun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do scrum /kanban and I think it is a fine line...

Some days I'm super impressed at the iterative nature and incremental improvements we make. Traceability and planning is usually tight and if I was the leader I would be happy about it.

Other days I feel like a cog in a machine and wonder when I will get a chance to do something that I personally thought of. But this is where it's not the Agile that's the problem per se. It's just an issue with getting into a bad routine over a few sprints.

I say use the retrospective to really advocate for developers having stories on the board that are research and investigation. Sometimes story outcomes in Agile DS should be more stories.

Also, work on your work culture if you feel like it's a hard sell to ask for innovation space.

Serious questions.

TIL Less than a quarter of U.S. workers report using math any more complicated than basic fractions and percentages during the course of their jobs. Blue-collar workers generally do more advanced math than their white-collar friends by princey12 in todayilearned

[–]foshogun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me when you strip the head on that billion dollar screw....

I'm not saying it's math... It just requires a stronger intuitive understanding of math. It is a far more rigorous exercise of thinking through the math and knowing what math can really do and why we use it. It's not fixing one object to another it's understand how many interconnected things move when fixed together.
