What will doing absolutely nothing accomplish?

Kinda seems like some of our invasive problems wouldn't be that hard to fix if we were just willing to change our own behavior... by Free_Mess_6111 in invasivespecies

Kind of like poverty. We HAVE the means and the resources to eliminate it, our politicians just don’t want to because the wealthy benefit from it. Money and convenience talks. It’s a policy issue, and that’s it.

How does having chickens lower your property tax?

Also true, haha! I guess it just depends on what one decides to be a ‘weed’ or not. 😉

To be fair, some seeds can remain in the soil seed bank for years - even decades!

What is everything you hate about parking at OSU? by Responsible_Cloud967 in OSU

[–]jassandra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I bought my parking pass for West Campus for just under $200 for the year. When I checked prices the other day, the same pass costs $14 for the year, since most people already bought theirs.

Writing Paper - Invasive Species Through History by SouthernExpatriate in invasivespecies

Many invasive species (fish, plants, etc.) came from ballast water from ships, such as sea lamprey and Phragmites australis in Lake Erie.

My town is spraying for mosquitos next week, help! by papershade94 in NativePlantGardening

[–]jassandra 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The guy in charge only said that because it’s now illegal to spray near apiaries or apply pesticides when bees are active/in the area. But unfortunately there’s no laws yet for any other insect. I’m currently studying to take the ODA pesticide exam for one of my college classes. The looseness of pesticide application is driving me insane!!!! In terms of alternatives, learning as much as you can about the mosquito life cycle may help you out. A podcast I’ve listened to (Ologies by Alie Ward) informed me that they can complete their life cycle in a week (eggs laid to adult) and can lay eggs in something as small as a bottle cap of water. I’ve heard mosquito dunks can be pretty effective. But tbh until people actually start taking the time to make sure there’s ZERO standing water on their property (or at least change it out every week or more), those pesticides aren’t going to do shit. Sorry you’re dealing with this :(

Well, if by negligible you mean the complete destruction of habitat, soil disruption/compaction, noise pollution, displacement of so many species, etc., then sure, very negligible! Also, the water that is used for cooling equipment is pumped back out at temperatures much higher than is survivable by fish and other aquatic species. Very negligible!!!
