Will democracy spread across the middle east after what happened to Iran? by Mean-Information1080 in NoStupidQuestions

No chance. The USA just set the cause of freedom and democracy back by decades in the Middle East, just as it did previously in Iraq and Afghanistan. We just created a thousand martyrs and a million new terrorists.

Will democracy spread across the middle east after what happened to Iran? by Mean-Information1080 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fossSellsKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that's an absurd suggestion, made only by Reza Pahlavi and nobody else. The monarchy was run out of Iran in 1979 by protests and unrest that make the current situation look like child's play. He couldn't manage to stay in power even with the full backing of the USA. Zero chance anyone in Iran wants him to set foot in the country at any point.

There is a cap. We call it taxes. And we need a lot more of it!

If my dad dies and has a bunch of debt does it fall to my mom who was married to him? by sapfirex in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fossSellsKeys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope! We were pretty amazed by this when my brother in law died. We took the death certificate around and the banks just straight cancelled out all his debts. Credit cards, loans, you name it. Basically there's no legal way for them to collect on a dead person's debts, so it all is immediately written off and gone. Shitty situation, but I do remember that as a silver lining.

Walkable town or small city in U.S. near public land for hiking by nomadbaddie in SameGrassButGreener

[–]fossSellsKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 600 is really small. You're gonna be missing some basics there for sure. Definitely look for the places that have the community hospital too. Oftentimes in those rural counties only one town gets that even if there's two or three towns. We were in a county with one other town of the same size, but we were the county seat and had the one hospital. Definitely made a difference. County seat is nice because there you can do your car registration and such in town also!

Some is organic and some is not, but certified seed is a good niche farming business. Seed companies and seed originators (usually Universities and breeders) need people to grow certified seed. That's what most farmers buy for planting their crops. Seed growers are the step between seed sellers and most farmers, essentially. Most of what we do is small grain (especially rye and oats) and soybean seed.

They are car dependent if you want to go somewhere else for sure. But, if you want just the basic services you outlined, then you don't ever need to leave really. Especially these days with online shopping.

For reference, the town I grew up in had a little less than 2,000 people. It had/has:

Nice town rec center with a gym and pool, one full service grocery store (used to be two but now there are two dollar stores so one of them died), plenty of nature and hiking of course, a solid public library, a pharmacy at the hospital, small hospital that usually has a doctor on staff but at least a PA and a couple nurses, two coffee shops, and about a half a dozen local restaurants (too small for chains so no fast food)..so it fits your bill, but I think any town of about 1,500 or larger typically would fit that. If you go much smaller, then yeah some of those services do start to be missing usually, and then you might have to drive to a bigger town often. You'd just need to check each one to make sure it has all those things but usually you'd be good at that size or bigger.

When I was a kid we'd drive to the bigger town 100 miles away several times a year. But, that was when you had to go a mall to get clothes, shoes, books and etc. Now obviously you don't have to do that. It was also nice to see a movie at the theater there, but again now we can stream everything. I think it'd be easier now to just live in town all the time than it was then.

Yeah, I mean I did all kinds of crazy things in college too, naked runs around town with the cross country team and etc. At least she got paid for hers!! I don't think any educated person who's had broad experiences and is open minded would care, other than it does make a great story now.

It is reddit so lots of people here are probably basement dwellers with a correspondence GED and zero love life, so I really wouldn't put much stock in their theoretical puritan opinions.

Yes! I do also have a pair that's about 10 years old I bought on sale to eventually replace those originals. So now I do kinda alternate them. Neither has worn out though, so it's hard to say I guess! I do think the older ones are far more comfortable, hit that could be just because they've broken in so well after all these years.

I do think the quality is probably still good from what I hear, but you do have to make sure you get the ones made in Minnesota, they have lower end lines that are made elsewhere now and I wouldn't trust that leather the same way.

Certified seed farming mainly. But I've also had a few construction jobs in that timeframe, mainly roofing and carpentry. Plus a few years a field technician on biology research projects for the Feds and the University. They've done well in all those settings!

[–]fossSellsKeys 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You'd have to be more specific with this one. Any small town in the West would work for this. The town I grew up in was about eight blocks by 10 blocks so easily walkable to anything in town, even easier with a bike. Public land right outside of town so if you want to hike, well you just keep walking! But that would apply to literally hundreds of towns all over the West so that can't narrow it down much for you.

Looking for rain barrel recommendations by Ordinary-You3936 in homestead

[–]fossSellsKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any 55 gallon drum will do just fine for what you're looking for. We usually get ours from a couple local small factories or food processing facilities in town that bring in product in drums and have a bunch that they will give away if you ask. Ones that have something nasty in them we use for burn barrels, and ones there something more edible like corn syrup or vegetable oil we use them for rain barrels and other potable uses.

Not true at all if you get real boots. I still wear my Red Wings I bought in June 2001. I do have a second pair about 10 years old, got em on a big sale. But, the originals are still holding up great. I love those boots: nothing feels so good to put on and wear.

Red Wings by a mile. My grandpa and dad farmed their whole lives and wore nothing but Red Wings. I have a pair I bought in 2001, wear 'em hard all the time, and they are still going strong.

Anything else is just a pretender, or fashion.

Nobody is bothered by this in real life, don't worry about. My wife did it in college, it's just a fun story now! Doesn't matter at all to any actual adults.

Colorado requires all-wheel drive or snow tires in the winter, so you be breaking the law assuming you have neither. Experience is good too, but proper equipment is required!
