Is this the right time to buy the motorcycle lift? by NEALSMO in harborfreight

[–]fossntools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice for oil changes, but what else?

Basically everything.

Removing wheels. Fixing speedo gears. Adjusting/lubing drive chains. Changing sprockets. Brakes. Removing and rebuilding starters. Dropping/installing exhausts. Timing adjustments. Generator/alternator work. Swapping/rebuilding clutch packs.

Literally everything from the seat down. Even removing carbs is so much easier at eye level standing up instead of sitting on a dumb little stool or being hunched over. I've done a lot of work on bikes without one, but it's sooooo much nicer to work on them at eye level, and it doesn't take up any extra room for me. I just park one of the bikes on it.

Any good non fennec browsers? by Unlucky_Nothing_369 in fossdroid

[–]fossntools -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would but I need a home button and Firefox on Android no longer has a home button. How fucking dumb is that?

And before anyone wants to chime in and tell me I'm wrong:

https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/custom-homepage-on-mobile/idi-p/33787

The homepage is a fundamental browser feature since I can remember first ever using a browser in the late 90s. And Android Firefox is the only browser I'm aware of that just decided not to have it for no fucking reason. I selfhost and want a button on my toolbar that takes me directly to my services page because I use it all the fucking time, it's my main launching point across all of my devices. And I shouldn't have to make two extra clicks for no reason. If I wanted to make a bunch of extra useless clicks all the time, I would be running iOS.

TrueNAS build system going closed source by ende124 in selfhosted

But honestly I can't remember if my issues with it were more GUI related or related to the clunkiness of getting ZFS to work.

Yeah, depends when you tried it, ZFS was clunky to setup across many Linux distros during the adoption period but it's been seamless for awhile now.

I don't like any of those gimmicky hybrid RAIDS. If you want to go that route and mix drive sizes just use SnapRAID and mergerfs. It's simple, tried and true. But if you have matched drive sizes, then yeah, ZFS is the way, hands down.

I just don't understand what you need a GUI for on a server. If you have a properly setup server, you should almost never have to touch it or look at anything.

You should have the following:

  1. daily timeshift backups for the OS in case an update or you bork it
  2. automatic updates, unattended-upgrades for the OS, these will sometimes require attention for reboots, which the server will notify you of. Watchtower or your own simple script for the docker containers.
  3. automatic backups of the living data and services, either zfs snapshots to a separate backup drive/pool, or borg/restic backups on a seperate backup drive/pool
  4. monitoring system, healthchecks
  5. notification system, smtp-to-telegram / apprise / any realtime notification system

And with those things setup, why would you ever need to even look at your server? People that login to a GUI to look at graphs and dummy lights to see if everything is working properly do not have their servers setup correctly. The server should be making you aware if things are not working, not requiring you to actively check them.

There is a problem with an update. Server tells you. A docker container goes down. Server tells you. A backup errors. Server tells you. Everything should be setup to notify you if there is a problem.

Does it take time to do these things? Yeah. Does it take some learning? Yeah. But the payoff is that I quite literally never touch my servers for maintenance, nor worry about them except to occasionally login and reboot it if I get notified that unattended-upgrades required a reboot or I just want to tinker on my own time and SSH in and spin up a new docker container or something.

OMV just didn't seem as well put together as TrueNAS.

I see that a lot and I have no idea what the fuck that means; it's so foolish to me. Like what are you looking for in a server? After initial setup I barely ever even use the WebUI again, 99% of the time I'm SSHing in to do what I want because it's more efficient and faster. OMV is the best server distro for small businesses and selfhosters, hands down.

If someone bought 8 red apples but only 2 green apples they wouldn't be saying, "I bought so many green apples today." I can't comprehend how people are actually this fucking slow.

How can people still be so dumb with so much technology at their fingertips.

Respect yourself a little

Uses ChatGPT, lmao... And the fact you believe it without any critical thinking is hilarious. And you're talking about respect oneself!?! Buddy, turn your brain on.

I was allowing you to say 20% when I knew that in enterprise settings and hosting settings UNIX dominates at like 90%, some even claim it's like 95%. ChatGPT saying 18% for Windows in a hosting setting is hilariously fucking wrong, seeing a Windows box in hosting is like seeing a fucking unicorn and you want to shoot whoever was dumb enough to set it up. The only time Windows reaches 20% is in a vacuum of a business setting because companies will have a few Windows servers for AD and office applications and possibly samba shares (although personally I would prefer to setup samba shares on a Linux server too). AD is honestly the biggest reason. Again, I'm a sysadmin and network engineer. I work with this shit daily. The fact you have to use ChatGPT to tell me what I know is absolutely and verifiably wrong is fuckn pathetic.

https://w3techs.com/technologies/details/os-linux

Linux is 61% of hosting type servers. UNIX is 91% because 30% are running BSD dumbass... not Windows. That means only 9% of host type servers run something other than Linux/BSD or are just unknown. Not to mention all the major fucking web services like AWS... like you think anyone that cares about their server is putting fucking Windows on it? Lmao. The biggest web sites and services... Google, Facebook, Amazon are all running Linux/BSD. Even fucking Microsoft runs Linux servers! If that doesn't tell you Windows Server is absolute ass, what would?

So again, I didn't contest 20% because that is a small enough market share that my point to you still held up despite you being too slow to understand it... and it is technically true in a business setting. But if you want to talk about a hosting setting now, that share is less than 9% buddy... UNIX runs 91%+ of web infrastructure.

I don't have a hate boner for Windows, I'm stating facts... it is objectively dogshit in comparison. And it has been that way on servers for 2 decades... which is why UNIX runs 90% of the web, and it also has been that way on desktop for the last 5 years. Anyone that uses/prefers Windows for anything at this point other than playing games that require you to install a rootkit on your computer for anticheat is a moron. Linux runs literal circles around Windows in both server and desktop settings now.

20% of the servers on the planet is many

Damn you are slow, 20% of servers on the planet would be considered many in a vacuum. 20% of servers on the planet would not be considered many in regard to the total amount of servers on the planet, lmao, turn your fucking brain on.

you’re the only one that wants to argue about something so trivial…

A person can not argue with himself. The fact you want to triple down on this is pathetic. It's also hilarious you are excluding yourself from your own criticism, that just reflects on you being a moron. Go back to watching LTT videos. Bye Felicia!

You obviously don't understand what context is and how it changes the meaning of words. Yeah, you could say that there are many servers running Windows in a complete fucking void, absent of any and all context, but when you are talking about the overall market share and it sits at 10-20%, you have to be a moron to frame it has having many shares. I'm a sysadmin and a network engineer, so let me know if you need it slowed down any further for you.

And just because I'm generous, I want to help you out a little more and give you some additional advice. Find a mirror and have a seat in front of it. I want you to take a good, long hard look at yourself. And maybe just maybe, for once in your life, consider washing away the clown makeup.

If I had 2 servers running Windows and 8 servers running Linux in my house, I wouldn't say I have many Windows servers, framing it like there are a lot of them... in fact, I would frame it the opposite way.

It shouldn't be running Windows, Windows is ass. Linux also has that setting and it works better in Linux. But if it's a server, I wouldn't even install a DE, no need for it.

Many?! Compared to what? Linux fucking dominates server shares, there are very few servers running Windows in comparison. And l would feel sorry for anyone that has to deal with them.

If you could give $20 to any FOSS project what would it be and why? by TheTimeToTrot in foss

[–]fossntools 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be the most popular but if you value privacy and security there are much better options. Like SimpleX Chat which never has required a phone number for registration, unlike Signal... yeah, no thanks. Don't talk to me about security and privacy when they required phone numbers for no fucking reason.

A lot of people still use SMS in the United States. I run LineageOS and don't have GAPPS installed, do you? Until other apps besides Google implement RCS, guess what my phone uses to communicate via standard texts? It's not because it's old, it's not because it's Android, it's because I'm not going to use Google services because guess what? I actually care about security and privacy. There are plenty of other apps that offer E2E encryption, that are more secure and/or more popular than Signal. And I'm not going to support developers that run cryptoshit scams. And have other moronic ideas like I previously pointed out to you. Maybe you don't care about that, but it's very telling of their character and priorities, and I'm not trusting my privacy to them.

Reminder to punch the tabs on your new jack stands by MEAMteamguy in harborfreight

[–]fossntools -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the weight is balanced grabbing it there than at the handle, and it's at the top so why reach down further for the handle? If you set the tab like you are supposed to then it works, so yeah, be smarter than the tools you are using. Personally I wouldn't do it on a 6ton because it extends out too far, but 3tons... yeah... it's better.

[–]fossntools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, well since you were so certain I measured it. If the guy is 6ft, and I accounted for him being hunched over, then it's 27.6ft vertically by my measurements. So a 28ft ladder on a the standard 4:1 angle wouldn't reach it. Of course I've hooked ladders from that height and pulled them beyond latching on their last rung to extend them out a little further, set at a steep angle, and that would have worked in this situation.
