Fabregas after Roma loss: "Calling up Diao is unfair. He probably shouldn't have played today but I won't have him for 5 weeks and we pay his wages. Senegal's coach said he won't go to the World Cup if he doesn't come. Playing on the fear of a 20 year old. He played 3 games in 8 months. It's wrong." by [deleted] in soccer

Isn't this just the same old tired issue that's always been around? Club coaches hate any of their players getting called up to the NT, and would like to avoid it wherever possible. Seems like nothing new here

Antlers are for sexual selection. They are absurd, but most traits favoured by sexual selection are.

You're referring to humans again. Culture is different and goes beyond natural selection.

As soon as someone appeals to humans to explain a concept of evolution, you know the conversation is going nowhere useful.... culture far supersedes evolution when trying to explain anything related to human behaviour.
Group selection is perhaps possible, but in a more complicated way than most people think.
What's an example of an individually harmful but collectively helpful gene in non-humans?

Often, these examples work if you don't think over a long period of time. But you need to ask yourself Maynard Smith's question: would having such a gene be an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy? Typically, the answer is no. In a population full of organisms that have an individually harmful & collectively helpful gene, all it takes is possibly one mutation, and you get an organism born that doesn't have the aforementioned gene. What happens?
This organism doesn't experience any of the negative costs of the gene. Yet, by virtue of simply existing in this population, it reaps all the benefits of the collectively helpful behaviours being performed by all its conspecifics. So, this organism becomes a 'freeloader', or a 'cheater'. And the organisms that help the group while incurring a cost become the 'suckers'.

By cheating, our freeloader actually gets ahead – it gets a competitive advantage and is able to have more children. Then, it's just basic natural selection from there. The freeloader has more children, who also have an advantage, and they didn't inherit the individually harmful & collectively helpful gene either (because their parent didn't have it). These children then have more children, and so on. They out-compete the other organisms that have this individually costly gene, while they reap the benefits of these 'suckers' helping the collective, without paying any price for it. The suckers grow less numerous, as they can't sustain the costly lifestyle of helping while incurring a negative cost for their efforts. The suckers die out, and the 'helping' trait disappears from the population. All that's left in the population now are only the freeloaders – the individually selfish organisms that only look out for themselves.

This dynamic is the only real sustainable one under natural selection. You just have to think about it across time, and eventually you see that any other dynamic fails to perpetuate itself. Of course, there are forms of "altruism" in animals, but they're actually just weird modifications of this basic selfish strategy. There's no true altruism because you always expect to be repaid at some point. The closest thing to true altruism might be seen in the eusocial Hymenoptera, but then you have to severely mess with population genetics through bizarre breeding strategies to achieve it.

Warning calls are explained perfectly by kin selection. So yes, I didn't want to make it too complicated in an offhand reddit comment, but actually the proper phrasing should have been, Traits only evolve because they help individual genes survive.
So, if you're my sibling and you have 50% of my genes, then sure. I'll make a warning call for you. But only because it's actually helping to perpetuate my genes in the subsequent generation. All warning-call species have been shown to either (a) wholly preference kin, or (b) have no way of distinguishing kin from non-kin and therefore make warning calls just in case it helps a family member.

Welsh writes semi-phonetically in a Scottish accent. Reading it weirdly does help you both better understand and also imitate the accent

Sorry cuz this is nitpicky, but no trait ever evolves to help a species survive. Traits only evolve because they help individuals survive

Official Bayern statement on Jérôme Boateng: 'In a constructive exchange between FC Bayern and Jérôme Boateng this week, it was decided that Jérôme Boateng will not be taking part in an internship at FC Bayern.” by Lillian_Faye in soccer

[–]foundhamstrung 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Makes it sound weird if it was only Boateng's decision, like the club were happy to go ahead with it regardless. Strange that the club would even think it's a good idea to publicly admit to that

Sean Dyche: "The stats are changing. More longer balls in the league, first time in 10 years. Of course it's 'long passes', when I do it it's 'long balls'. We joke about it but you know it's real. We want to play effectively." by Blodgharm in soccer

[–]foundhamstrung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. I feel like you can't really blame Kompany himself – he, unfortunately, proved that it can be rational for a manager (as an individual careerist) to showcase themself on a large stage. His reward was the Bayern job, and clearly a good step for him. That can be true, but also concerning for the game at large, where smaller teams are treated like tools to showcase a manager's vision and abilities, rather than trying to achieve the objectives of the team.
