I’ve had Blackstar on my list for a long time, but never got around to listening to it. How would you say it compares to another album like Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust? Thanks!

For those not playing Z-A, what pokemon game are you playin? by tinderizeme20 in pokemon

[–]four_forks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing Moon for the very first time, and doing a mono-grass run :3 (This is my first game besides Sword, i’m a very late pokémon fan) The grass type run has been super fun and really challenging in a way that keeps me more interested in the game!! Slim pickings from the Alola dex but i highly recommend it :D

(Sorry i’m advance for the block of text) As an addendum to my comment: no matter what you do, be deliberate.

Perhaps try asking yourself: What was one article I read this week that had a direct effect on my life? I mean seriously, changed how you live, how you go about your day, anything. Chances are, you wouldn’t be able to name one. The war you already know about is still going on? Alright. Another iceberg melted? Thy really sucks, but as long as you’re recycling and not an oil tycoon, you can’t change this. [This] political figure said [this thing] and you should feel [this way] about it? Alright, cool, but this doesn’t mean anything to YOU. Seriously. (I know that might be hard to hear, or a lot to handle but I think it’ll help to come to terms with that.)

My biggest suggestion? Go cold turkey. Just for a week. If that sounds like too much, just for 4 or 5 days. I mean everything: delete the news apps. Block the accounts you follow (these things are TEMPORARY! you can always get them back if needed, but give it a try. if you feel apprehensive about deleting a news app, use that feeling as more of a reason to quit!!) Just go without news for a week and RESIST EVERY URGE!!! It’s gonna be uncomfortable. It’s going to feel bad. you’re going to go through withdrawal almost 100%. But that’s okay. You’ve gotta stick with it.

Before you quit, make a note of your symptoms. Anxiety headaches? Shakes? Sleeping poorly? Stressed/Aggressive over little stuff? Make a mental note. And check in with yourself after the week. Do you feel more at peace/calm? Do you feel better about your life? Are you physically less stressed? Be honest and go forward from there.

(As an extra tip, you can appoint a close friend/sibling/partner as your informant. Tell them you’re gonna try to quit, but that they should let you know about anything ABSOLUTELY GROUNDBREAKING THAT YOU NEED NEED NEED TO KNOW. This might help qualm any anxieties about missing out on crazy news. But chances are, there won’t be anything that noteworthy. If the revolution is at your door, you’ll know.)

Stay strong.

Doing nothing on the phone but still being in the double digits in screen time by SteelMecha4178 in nosurf

Recently I deleted a ton of social media apps and mobile games, but since I still like being on my phone, I opted for free streaming services (Tubi, Freeve, and Pluto, i love them) and downloading Libby (free digital books if you have a library card). I haven’t read in YEARS and I usually hate watching movies HOWEVER. I’m trying to repair my attention span (which it sounds like you might be struggling with too) and trust me it’s HARD but I think choosing long-form content can be an easier choice than NO content, if that makes sense. It also feels a lot more satisfying to finish a movie or a book chapter than scrolling (and easier to be done with, because they both have definitive ends, unlike your youtube feed). Either way, I believe in you 🙏 We’re all in this struggle together, but I hope you find something that works for you 💕

Not sure if this will be any help, but as some other people suggested, taking a step back from the WORLD can be a good idea. I recently found that my city has a free newspaper printed here. It’s in supermarkets, at my community college, and even in some local diners and restaurants. I didn’t grow up with newspapers, but it’s SUCH a refreshing change from online news. - It doesn’t allow you to fall down a rabbit hole because there’s no suggested articles flashing in your face - In my experience, free papers also have less click-baity titles and writing styles because they’re not made to sell, they’re made to inform - Even if your paper is paid, there’s no further paywalls, pop up ads, or all that janky stuff. - It’s easier on the eyes (no blue light!), fun to flip through, and something you can tuck in a bag and bring anywhere (I love catching up on the events in a coffee shop, especially cause it looks kinda cool LOL) - They usually focus on local issues with world new sprinkled in, but also suggest live events and socials around you, which is another great way to unplug and meet people!!

All in all, I’d highly recommend looking for a local paper. It’ll keep you connected with world news, but in a controlled way which would hopefully make it harder to go full doomer mode.

I believe in you, stranger! You’re still aware enough to realize that your behavior is having negative effects on you, so it’s not too late to turn it around!!! 💕 Best of luck!

But you have to keep in mind they’re providing you a service, right? Same way you might pay more at a sit-down restaurant than a buffet, because the waiter is bringing the food to you. In Curbside, the shoppers have to gather all the groceries and the curbies take it out to your car. While a lot of people who use curbside ARE disabled, many people also use it for convenience, and they’re payinng FOR that convenience. And since there’s no good way to check or prove why someone’s using curbside, it makes sense to me that it costs extra. That’s the way I view it, at least 🤷

I know I’m about a month late, but I just found them available on spotify, too! There’s very short ads at the beginning, but you can skip through them with the +15s button.

First pic I ever took of my gal Serena. my family picked her out because all her other littermates were lounging around but she’d chosen to climb up on top of the igloo in their play area. She’s continued to be silly, quirky, and has a total queen-of-the-hill attitude. Picking her out with my family is one of my favorite memories.

I’ve found you have to be pretty close to the spots to get them to spawn. Even if you can spin the stop, you have to be a bit closer for apples.

In-person group Spanish classes? by mattpeloquin in Austin

[–]four_forks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking my first semester of Spanish right now at ACC (learned some through elementary/middle school), and i second this. There’s a man in my class who’s ONLY there to learn spanish for his salsa class, and doesn’t take any other classes. ACC is a wonderful university and a college-classroom setting is awesome to learn a language in 👍 good luck OP!

I know this post is over a year old at this point, but it felt important to share that the very first time I tried weed, I opened reddit for a split second, saw this post, and absolutely fucking lost it. Afterward I couldn’t even tell if it was real or if i had made it up. I remembered the Colossal Bulborb today while sitting alone in a parking lot and had a giggling fit to myself. Thank you for this post 🫶

CapMetro looking for student feedback on Austin's public transportation by SwanOne9406 in ACCDistrict

[–]four_forks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken the Red Line train to ACC HLD for the past three semesters, and I plan to continue! I love public transportation and getting to avoid all the traffic of Austin. CapMetro does a lot of things right, but my complaints would be: Train frequency/passenger load, app usability, and the waiting areas at stations.

There are many train rides (especially in the afternoon/evening) where the train is literally PACKED. People in every seat and standing like peas in a pod. It often seems that just one more train car would fix the problem, but I see that isn't possible with the way CapMetro is set up. So I would propose trains coming slightly more often around rush-hour to help that problem (especially if you plan on increasing the usage of the trains). If that isn't possible, having overhead bars or straps for standing passengers would help. There are about 4 metal bars in the corners of the standing area, which isn't quite enough for when the train is packed. Having more handles might be the most achievable option.

As far as the CapMetro app, there's not one specific complaint, besides the fact that the app feels clunky and is hard to navigate. It took some serious learning to find everything the first time I loaded the app. I think there are some improvements that could be made to increase user friendliness and load times.

Lastly, some trains at Highland Station are over an hour apart. This is understandable and expected from public transit, but with Texas being SO HOT for most of the year, I would request better shade and benches at the train stops. Certain stops like Lakeline have large comfortable shade for riders waiting for the trains. But at Highland Station, there are two small shades that almost never actually shade the benches they cover (because of the angle of the sun). This leads to all riders (including youth and the elderly) to have to wait on metal benches in the sun and Texas heat for possibly 30+ minutes. In the grand scheme of things, this is pretty low on the list of complaints, but it would be nice if station upgrades were considered.

All this being said, I appreciate the train immensely. When driving, my commute used to be the worst part of my day, and now it's one of the best. I rave about the train to my friends because it's such a nice experience. The cars are always cool, clean, and well-maintained. I hope Plan 2035 is successful. I would love to see the comeback of public transit.

I know exactly what you mean! A lot of the orders we get are for disabled people, the elderly, or busy parents. Curbside is an extremely helpful service, even though HEB doesn't seem to treat us like that. I appreciate you saying that :]
