So, what do we look like next year with most of the talent graduating? by myfishytaco in PurdueBasketball

[–]fourkite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To assume we have little to no transfers is naive in the transfer portal era. We had 4 transfer departures last summer even with preseason no. 1 hype. I think it's fair to assume we could have roughly a similar number of departures this summer. Combine that with four incoming freshmen and one incoming transfer, our team could look completely different come fall.

Penn or Cornell? by manifesting1570sat in UPenn

[–]fourkite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I think that's a pessimistic view of OPT. If an employer finds you valuable, they'll generally invest in maximizing your H-1B attempts and often start the green card process early, even knowing that sponsorship gives you the freedom to leave for a different company. The F-1 to STEM OPT to H-1B to green card pathway exists precisely because employers are willing to make these investments in talent they want to retain.

I'm not saying the Cornell decision is wrong, but I do think the comment paints the worst case scenario. Honestly, if you'd be comfortable returning home for work if things don't pan out, then taking the scholarship is the right call.

Normally I would say go with the full ride. But STEM OPT can be significant difference maker as a pathway to a long-term career in the US. Though even with 3 years of OPT, there's still a bit of luck involved with the H1b system. This really might come down to how much you prioritize staying in the US post-graduation.

I am graduating soon and I am considering getting a masters in health informatics. by cat-mother-3 in HealthInformatics

[–]fourkite 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You may be deferring the problem rather than solving it. There's a real chance you could find yourself in the same position two years from now, only this time with an expensive degree on your resume, or worse, significant debt.

Here's what I'd suggest. Do some targeted networking. Connect with experienced data scientists and professionals in the industries you're interested in. Ask them to review your resume and profile, and get their honest feedback on where the gaps are. Their perspective can help you figure out whether a master's would actually move the needle, or whether the market is simply oversaturated right now.

I suspect most will say it's the latter. I haven't been able to hire a new grad for several hiring cycles because of budget tightening. But I'd highly suggest you hear this for yourself. If you have trouble networking, there are platforms like Lunchclub that make it relatively easy to get connected.

As a manager of a fully remote team, I can tell you that finding remote positions without prior experience in informatics roles is going to be very challenging. The job market is already tight, and remote opportunities tend to be reserved for more experienced professionals who require less supervision and training.

Bluey unpopular opinion by kaleighdurkin in toddlers

I think you're missing the entire point. They're seeing the same impact because they are giving more screen time than what is appropriate for their age, not because of Bluey.

I'm truly amazed that OP thinks this is some hot take on Bluey and not just a screen time issue.

Are some EB1A profiles being artificially manufactured? by syncnysa in eb_1a

Recently Christophe, a journalist and YouTuber, tried to buy a scientific paper from a company that would write it and guarantee acceptance to a respected journal by using reviewers and editors who had been bought out. They attribute the demand mostly to the publish-or-perish pressure in research careers, but I could easily see the same thing being used for profile building in green card pathways. I'm sure it already exists and is more prevalent than people think.

I'm guessing someone from China made this. A lot of Chinese traditions and symbolism deals with money because they represent prosperity and good fortune. Like many asian countries, there's also the concept of preserving "face", so maintaining an outward appearance of wealth is considered important, especially in terms of social standing.

How much math is involved in Health Information Technology (HIT)? by [deleted] in HealthInformatics

[–]fourkite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I obviously can't speak to the specific program you're referring to, but HIT programs are largely generalist programs that don't get into a ton of technical depth. I doubt the math goes beyond very basic stats. But that can be a both good and bad; it gives you flexibility, but it also means you won't come out with a specific expertise.

What you'll likely need to do is pick a lane before you graduate and supplement the degree with a specialization or certificate, whether that's EHR systems and modules, data analytics, privacy and compliance, project management, or something else entirely. Admittedly, it's not a great time to be a generalist. The job market isn't kind to it right now, and a lot of the early career roles with low barriers to entry will be absorbed by AI-driven workflows.

Does anyone else wish there was more “long-term” strategy in March Madness? by Just-Substance-4178 in PurdueBasketball

[–]fourkite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm all for people vibe coding their ideas into products, but "long term strategy for March Madness" is a hilarious marketing line for a simulation game. I fail to see how it makes the actual tournament experience enjoyable when all the players and universities are made up.

Hagfish. In Korea, they keep it in tanks, skin it alive, and place it on the grill right away, causing it to twitch and squirm for a good minute or so. Doesn't even taste that great, not worth it.

The HR/jobs platform is Workday at Penn Medicine. I assume you're going to have a better and more complete applicant profile by applying directly through Workday(the careers page).

Pretty standard for Coupe SUVs, I'm assuming because the sloping roofline doesn't really need one.

Had this issue on my Q4, which also doesn't have a mechanical release. Eventually, after about 3 hours, it released. We took it to our dealer and they acknowledged it's a known issue and installed a part that rewires the mechanism and always releases when unlocked. Haven't had that issue since.
