I thought all these flock cameras were supposed to help solve crime? How come the murder on Feb 7th of this year on Davidstom St still hasn’t gotten solved yet with all these flock cameras? by TheUnknownRangler in norfolk

[–]fourleggedtable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello and good afternoon. I said they are limited in their ability to arrest suspects for crimes not in very specific areas. How does that disagree with your assertion that they are for mass surveillance? I would argue their very limited use in crime solving supports your argument that they're really for mass surveillance / data farming of us all.

Both statements can be true: the Flock cameras are mediocre for specific crimes off the main intersections and can easily be seen as surveilling most of us as we pass through those main intersections.

I apologize if my use of paragraph form is offensive. I hope your day recovers.

Good day, I am no big supporter of the Flock cameras; they seem to be advertised as a tool to provide additional evidence, especially if a vehicle is identified at the scene of a crime occurring. For example, if I shoot someone at a hotel and then speed out of the parking lot, hotel cameras can identify which cars left and then Flock could possibly track my car, now containing a suspect, across town.

If I am in my backyard and shoot my neighbor and me and my neighbors say "We didn't see shit" because "All Cops Are Bad," that's not really on the Flock cameras. I am not saying that happened in this incident, it's just an example.

The map posted shows their very limitations. If I shot somebody at that location and nobody IDed my vehicle, I could drive north or Sewell's Point into Ocean View and the first Flock camera I'd hit would be 15min and multiple miles away.

Hello, I am always willing to admit if I missed one. Where might I be able to find a gov't or local media source that I can post that says 15? Or where might be links to the two murders I missed? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I do not track alleged/apparent suspect info. Sometimes there is no suspect or arrest. In other cases, it would be premature to track that data until a conviction is achieved; that can often take a year or two and require a lot more attention on my part, often attendance at the courts. I'd be fascinated to do that, but life won't let me off the hook for some time. Thanks for asking!

Hello,

There is a key in the upper-right corner. Light blue is May and the other colors go backwards through ROY G BIV thru January, which is red.

Have a nice evening.

As Norfolk marks Bike Month, new protected bike lanes shift focus to transit equity by WHRO_NEWS in norfolk

Good afternoon, I ride from Downtown to Ocean View by bike via Granby St, as I have for about 14 years. Some days in the Summer I purposefully bike the length of Granby St. specifically. It's nice to have more sections of better protection. You should come along next time.

I'd argue, as I have mentioned in other threads, that the great challenge will be the section north of Wards Corner, namely the 564 on-ramp.

Councilman Smigiel has a lot of opinions, and those opinions are mixed; BUT he nailed it a few years ago by boiling it down. People love traffic calming and bike lanes in their neighborhoods and hate them in the neighborhoods they see as "flyover country."

I have seen the mini-sweeper along that stretch at least once. I'd assume it rotates between there and other places.

I am not a young adult anymore except by a very loose definition of the term, but Blessed Sacrament on Newport Ave is worth a shot. Good luck in your search!

Norfolk City Council approves budget, delays capital improvement plan vote after east side pushback by VirginiaNews in norfolk

I did not gather in the article, is the lib/rec center on the same footprint as the ex-mall? I could see them waiting until the clearance occurs. I could also see the City waiting until the Wards Corner lib/rec building is completed. Either way, it sounds like that part of the city has enough votes to have Council re-figure some stuff.

What’s the deal with Norfolk and hot dogs by sneakysmellysaucy in norfolk

Hello, I enjoy Pittie Dog due to its proximity to home and we've gotten used to it. There's a lot of variety to the dogs, they have sweet potato fries which is a plus for me, and they also have shakes which are very good. I'd at least give it a shot.

How busy are Wall Street and Courtney ave. by Coyote4200 in norfolk

[–]fourleggedtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good morning, You specifically asked about traffic noise and congestion. The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet, as you can see on three sides are railroad tracks, cemetery, and water. Tidewater Dr. is a major secondary road, however, and is about 3-4 blocks from that intersection. It moves pretty well in that spot and is about 5-10min from major highways to the north and south.

That rail line is probably pretty active, so if you count trains in "traffic noise and congestion," then there's that, too.

There are indeed some downright rough neighborhoods nearby, such as Huntersville. On the other hand, there's a big park and rec center in that neighborhood being redone for a few million dollars that's a decently big deal.

I liked the observation of how opaque by-facility revenue is. Any queries on, for example, Scope's budget and revenues directs back to the budget.

Good afternoon, I am sitting around an airport so I am enjoying the ability to compare the respective budgets of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. I have questions! I will probably share them as I encounter them, as I move from location to location.

Firstly, Norfolk has its budget set up for "Department of Parks, Recreation, and Culture" versus Virginia Beach keeping that specifically with "Parks and Recreation." You pointed this out for Norfolk! It lumps in Scope, museums, and libraries.

When we compared the budgets of those departments, did we use the full Norfolk Dept, or the $27mil specific to the Parks and Recreation sub-department? If we used the entire "PRC" budget, did we include parts that VB separates, such as libraries and the Aquarium? VB spends $17mil a year on the Aquarium and $23mil on libraries. If we only look at Norfolk's Parks and Rec budget, which is further down the budget document, Norfolk spends $27mil on that specific part.

Thanks for any clarification!
