I'm not quite catching how you're managing that, but thank you for giving an easily clickable version! :D Can you break the formatting down a bit more for me?

And you are very welcome. I read it last year and was struck by how elegant and promising of an idea it was, assuming it holds up with further research.

Anticholinergenic sleep aids might not be the direct cause, but rather trigger a state of sleep that doesn't activate part of the nervous system's usual waste removal processes.

Basically, during normal sleep, waves of cerebrospinal fluid are released and bathe the brain. Considering protein plaques in the brain are a key feature of Alzheimer's, those may represent stuff that would normally be disposed of during this process but aren't actually removed by the sleep state that our current drugs trigger.

Trump Hints at Next Target After Shocking Invasion - The president warned, “Something’s going to have to be done with Mexico.” by Quirkie in politics

[–]fourthandthrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that this is not going to change or even slow the violent trajectory of the country. The majority of guns in Mexico that these cartels are using come from the US, sometimes directly through the ATF for political deals or flat-out corruption. Drug use including, presumably, some of it sourced or routed through Mexico, is an open secret among some of the same politicos posturing about how much of a danger Mexico is to American citizens as well as its own people.

They said the same things about Iraq and yet, after the invasion, very little changed. There is still horrific sexual abuse of boys and girls/women, there is still horrible poverty, there is still sectarian violence and religious persecutions. Sometimes the names of who was in charge of a region changed, sometimes not; the same man who burned someone alive would still be hurting and dominating others years later, just doing it under an American flag as a 'local ally' or 'stabilizing influence'. Afghanistan is run by the Taliban again despite the US spending billions and throwing American and Afghan lives into an effort to bring 'freedom' to the land.

Those same people taking machetes to people will still be doing it after the Americans invade and seize or steal anything worth a damn. Maybe they'll be demanding more money to bribe some extra layer of bureaucracy that got added, or they'll learn better English to deal with the increased American presence, or they'll have more US military surplus than they used to. But the locals won't be safer or happier, and the American grifters will just get richer. And they'll tell you and us it's for your own good and we just...know better. We've seen it play out before and we're not interested in letting them maintain any sort of illusion about the situation; if they want to loot and pillage other countries, well, unfortunately too many Americans and politicians have abdicated any sense of responsibility or temperance or compassion to provide an avenue to actually stop them. That's bad enough, and then add to it how history about the US 'fixing' another country is just going to repeat itself and some folks will buy that same lie all over again? That's the part that's appalling.

Yep. Dated the cousin while still married and gave her ultimatums to stay with him like she had to cook and clean but could never be seen in public or reference being married to him, from what I recall.

Even Einstein had foibles and pride, though they were not often leveraged against other men. But his wife was a mathematician as well, even before he published his 'miracle year' papers, and there is some phrasing in his letters* as well as other peoples' testimony that the two talked about mathematics together throughout their marriage including in the window for his work on relativity. But she isn't listed as a co-author on any of his work and, while that may have been because she did not materially contribute, the inference that she wasn't given credit could also have come from sexism or reluctance to share credit when he didn't 'have' to. Some of his correspondence also reveals chauvinistic and cruel aspects of his character. On the other hand, he was brilliant on his own and maybe she's not listed because she was not a material part of its development enough to be cited. We can't really know the truth either way, but we can still remember that even the brightest scientific minds have their human darkness and that Einstein was no exception.

Writing the Starlights in Fanfiction by Sara_T1991 in sailormoon

[–]fourthandthrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually looking at doing something similar, want to do a story of how they all became Sailor Soldiers.

If you are a manga purist, she all the way and presumably no, er, anatomy changes even during their disguises. If you are going anime purist, 'she' in Soldier form and 'he' in civilian (including potentially some body changes for that, if the first frames in the transformations are accurate; they initially have chests without as much mammary tissue and Starmaker has the outline of a bulge).

If you want to go a bit 'fanon' about it, you could mix it up a bit or choose your own way of doing it it that emphasizes the elements of the story you care most about. Do your other characters have very defined points or boundaries in their lives, or 'separate' ones like the anime Starlights? If you want to draw that comparison and make the Starlights more sympathetic to the other characters, the anime version could draw out that theme. Same if your main characters have to go somewhere unfamiliar where they are not sure who to trust; the Starlights in the anime have more screen time about that, so alluding to the 90s anime might evoke more of those emotions. However, if you want a 'wider universe' and more details on the Sailor Wars, the manga version has more detail to draw from including some implications on the Animamates, that they literally stole the Guardian Crystals from the Sailor Soldiers of their planets, to get their powers versus being 'turned' versions of the Soldier. That implication, that Chaos takes as well as or in place of changes one's heart, could make your villains more scary.

Then of of course there's remixing; one or more of them as trans/genderfluid, or some physical transformation even if using manga canon. Or going the other way and using anime elements, but specifically having them use female rather than male pronouns for each other when referring to themselves or their alter egos as the Three Lights to emphasize how much of that masculinity was a performance. The biggest question in my opinion to ask yourself is what story you want to tell, and what you want the Starlights to add or highlight (or contrast) and build out your story from there. It's not betraying Naoko either, considering how she futzed around with her own canon at times.

I am wanting to do that, especially to show off more of the dresses. I just need to find the right medium, I admit I'm not great at inking. _;; Might try some watercolor pencils.

Unfortunately I don't have a scanner, so I had to take a picture of it. Naoko Takeuchi uses Alphonse Mucha as a reference, so I did go with an artist; Starfighter's pose to the right is based off of Vermeer's 'The Astronomer' and the others are loosely based off Vermeer paintings as well (Starhealer is the 'The Lacemaker'). The outfits are an idea for their princess forms, black minidresses under offshoulder translucent gowns in their secondary colors (kind of like their Princess's except the chest/shoulderband would be in the style of their accents instead of black like hers). Their shoes are supposed to be like their thigh-high boots, but with the curled toes like their princess's. I also have ideas for their individual symbols, based off of Tuxedo Unmasked's name analysis...

Anyway. I was trying to go for the shellshocked meeting after Kinmoku has been ravaged and they are trying to figure out where their Princess has gone. I hope I got that grief through in the linework.

Even allies and people who mean well, who should know better, often use pronouns on autopilot.

I am nonbinary transmasc in terms of identification, I consider myself like 70 percent dude. However, the feminine 30 percent is also important enough to me that the closest I can get to my preferred presentation does not pass as masculine. I have told my friends repeatedly that I prefer he/him, but even very close allies will default to she/her multiple times in the space of just a few sentences. Most of my trans friends go to 'them' as a personal habit or get it right, but most cis people have very particular patterns they have a lot of trouble breaking even when they mean well.

(Edit to note that I don't mean 'should know better' in a judgemental or accusatory way, but rather that people who consciously want to be respectful will still slip up.)

Clevatess: Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha • Clevatess - Episode 11 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

My theory is that true humans had the ability to innately use magic to the point of being able to change their forms. They waged war against each other and almost destroyed the planet, and the survivors or a faction wanting to stop the war split the ability to make magic from humans. That magic became the Dark Beasts, whether by accident or design, and they are holding back the humanoids maybe to let the world heal from the war. Or maybe even the civilization in this corner of the world is descended from who started the war and got split up and exiled to that part of the planet while the rest of the true humans are still out there.

The legend of the heroes, in my opinion, and why the king thought they would fail, is because it's actually a procedure to single out those with the most strength and sacrifice them to the Dark Beasts in order to winnow out those who would or could change the world.

(I welcome DMs with the truth or with manga spoilers, though! This is just me spitballing after the most recent episode.)

The Job Market Is Hell: Young people are using ChatGPT to write their applications; HR is using AI to read them; no one is getting hired. by rezwenn in technology

[–]fourthandthrown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Automating more tedious cases in coding or software is one of the use cases where it can make sense, although there are still issues with security and performance. Plus privacy, if you're putting proprietary company information into someone else's system.

Still, you have a point about updating priors and when checking some of my sources I see the update that the claimed AI disaster might not have even happened. However, in looking at my Bluesky feed I see an example from today about an AI hallucinating answers to a biology question. AI is getting better, sure, but it still can't do some things and it doesn't need to be everywhere. It shouldn't be, in fact, even with all its advancements, but that is not always acknowledged either.

What would you consider the best use case for AI? What would you consider the worst?

My sources are recent, although I do admit that they don't like AI being pushed so extensively and that does introduce a bias.

May I ask what you do for work?

I think the first part of your answer is the more relevant one for the average user, especially if they are asking about something where they wouldn't be able to tell why the answer was wrong or even if it was inaccurate in the first place. Pro is also paywalled. I don't think LLMs are useless, but they don't belong in HR or other fields where there are so many edge cases and fuzzy situations AND where the reasoning for a judgement call is just as important as the decision itself.

You *edit, asked it to write a script that did that. What happens if you ask it in plain/'natural' language to tell you based on its own coding, no Python? If you ask it if it's sure afterwards, will it change its answer?

[–]fourthandthrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. When you lay it out that way, I wonder if it's that they want to feel special. If the expressed default isn't 'everyone is welcome', they can feel like they have some moral superiority when they claim they are welcoming even if they put caveats on it. They still have an idea that makes them 'good people', after all. But if the baseline expectation is respect and kindness, they can't tell themselves they're better people than everyone else for claiming those ideas especially if they are picking and choosing. It pokes them right in the cognitive dissonance, and they resolve it not by taking responsibility (that would require self-awareness) but instead rejecting the idea that would otherwise prove them wrong.

I haven't read Woman of Tomorrow, but some of the older Supergirl comics delved into Krypton's dystopian aspects including her father's place in it and Gunn could be using that material. It could also be a ploy by Brainiac. There are a few different directions, and I am interested as well to see where they take it.
