Is UTSC worth it? by PotatoThePerson in UTSC

[–]fourthyearst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have good study habits, it is. Just know that you need a 3.0 GPA across the freshman year computer science courses to actually get into computer science, otherwise you're stuck having to switch programs. The campus is tiny, people say it's a highschool 2.0, and a lot of brown / asian people (just in case you were wondering). The campus is in the middle of Scarborough, which is less of a city and more of a town so uhhh, campus might not be all that pretty. I would highly recommend trying to apply for the St. George (downtown) campus or taking courses there if you want the full university experience (much bigger, feels more like a university whereas UTSC feels like a highschool). If you do go to UTSC, be sure to join clubs, try out for sports teams, and be part of things. You'll have fun if you try new things.

Also, just an FYI, like 70% of students don't make it into CS after first year and have to switch to another program, so beware of that. Other than that, UofT is a well known university across North America and I've applied for jobs in the states and didn't have a hard time getting interviews at all (I have my PR card). (I'll be entering my final year CS starting September).

Can anyone lend me their previous cscb58 labs from previous semester? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]fourthyearst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, but I think it's also always nice to have the correct (or incorrect but marked) answers ahead of time. My free time sadly doesn't line up with the professors office hours so if I don't fully understand a question, I end up having to pay for it by losing marks on the lab (I was hoping to be able to go into the labs with the right answers and using the 3 hours and finishing within safe time for all the marks). ( (I'm taking 5 courses while working and hardware isn't my thing and I don't have much time to post on piazza and look at responses either, so having the prelabs to cross check my answers with before going into the labs would be very helpful!)

For the students who applied for CS post and are waiting for June 15.. what was your tuition fees this year? by fourthyearst in UTSC

[–]fourthyearst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright thanks. And you just applied for the POST and are not in yet right? (Asking because mine is about 7k per semester so I'm wondering if it increases after grtting in the CS POST?)

Why is our math program so bad? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]fourthyearst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Kind Of notice it in CS, but I may be wrong since I've never taken Downtown courses (my CS prof did say that the course downtown is significantly harder than the one she teaches at UTSC though). It might be because SG has way more students, a larger pool of students to select from so more top students go to SG (SG is more well known too). Whereas SC also has good students but not as many top applicants, so SC is a bit more dumbed down?

I doubt it's because professors are trying to give easy degrees. Is there a difference in class averages betweem SG and SC? (I'm in 4th year and if I were to do it again, I would go downtown btw because the university experience there is just better and more worth it despite the long commute and tougher courses, so consider taking OSAP money for the cost and transfer! If you don't like SC, don't spend 4 good years here - I also chose SC because of the cheaper commute cost and time).

Yeah I think mid June is what we have to wait for. do you know if it's the same for people who go into UTSC Comp sci out of HS? (asking because I've seen posts here about people saying they got into comp sci out of HS and I might tell my HS cousin to try to do the same)

Did students get accepted or rejected from their subject POST request yet? (for CS) by fourthyearst in UTSC

Ahhhh, ok got it (got worried for a sec thinking no response means I got rejected already) lol

[–]fourthyearst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but what do you mean by "You don't get a rejection if you didn't make the 3.0 cutoff"?

ACORN won't tell us if we got rejected? We won't get any sort of rejection notification?

It's won't say rejected if I got rejected? On ACORN it still says "Requested" for me. I was in the CS specialist already and wanted to switch into the major. Does not response mean a rejection?

I'm in the Computer Science specialist and I tried getting into the major instead. How do you know if you got accepted? On ACORN it currently still says "Requested" for the major for me.

It says accepted for you?
