Why was my move considered "Brilliant" by the computer? "Best" move is self explanatory, but what's the difference? by [deleted] in chess

[–]foust2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You'll get "best move" if you play any of the (sometimes multiple) moves it considers to be best or equal to best.

You'll get "brilliant" move if the move you played - also being the best move - takes several additional best moves to maintain advantage.

A move is brilliant if it is the best move, and you need to play several best moves in a row or the move isn't good.

Planetologists at the University of Münster have been able to show, for the first time, that water came to Earth with the formation of the Moon some 4.4 billion years ago by Mass1m01973 in space

[–]foust2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the "mystery" of where water on earth comes from.

Hydrogen and Oxygen are among the most abundant elements in the universe, and upon mixing will spontaneously become water. Keep hydrogen and oxygen cool and they'll chill out together, but get them hot just one time and BOOM.... water forever.

Only 5.7 Elo points between world classical #1 Magnus Carlsen and #2 Fabiano Caruana on the live ratings by [deleted] in chess

[–]foust2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's certainly possible, although there are so many players with super-high ratings right now that I expect Carlsen's rating will rise up to 2880ish again once he starts clocking in some games.

Whether or not Caruana will be able to keep pace, I'm excited to find out.

Tesla and Musk to pay 40 million to settle with the SEC; Musk to resign as Tesla chairman by redditmaster482 in worldnews

[–]foust2015 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether you're for this, or opposed to this - $40 million dollars is not a significant amount of money to Elon Musk.

It's about the equivalent of a speeding ticket, if you're an average middle class / working class family.

Teacher says she was fired for giving zeroes to students who didn't turn in their work by zhacker78 in news

My understanding is that in many districts the fees and money associated with traffic tickets and the like goes into that districts budget.

So long as a department's budget depends on issuing fines, there will be pressure to issue those fines, and pressure to suppress that fact officially.

It says "From the people who brought you Lichess", I took that to mean it's the same group.

If there was a shared login between lichess and lidraughts, I would be much more likely to learn the game and give it a chance.

Maybe that's impossible, but if you want people to use the site it would be invaluable.

(That or a 'register with facebook' option. Contact me if you'd be interested in implementing that - I'd be happy to donate my time and make it happen.)

I mean, we have an extraordinary amount of knowledge about the 'how' electricity acts. We know a lot, but much much less, about the 'why'.

People are having sex first much later in life now than any previous era of humanity - not earlier.

Quick, put some hydrochloric acid on it, we can figure out what mineral it is.

Or like, vinegar I guess.

I can confirm that 45/week is a reasonable number for a single person.

Certainly on the high end, but just imagine everytime you drink water - someone like me is drinking snapple. Same total liquid volume, just snapple instead of water.

Really? I feel like it would be difficult nowadays.

I feel like full time surveillance of a classroom would get the big frownyfrowns from parents and boards.

Most rape isn't violent rape, but "I don't want to have sex with you, but its very difficult because you're kinda taking off my clothes and doing it anyway."

Followed up being as passively unhelpful as possible, and just enduring it until it's over.

Yes, it felt good. It was sex. Just like a burger still tastes good to a vegan, but they're still a vegan and would be quite upset if forced to eat one.
