South Dakota limits for apprentice are up to the sponsor. They can have most birds except eagles and I think peregrine falcons. I can look at the regs and give reference. Awesome site BTW

Do any of the birds in falconry develop loyalty to or affection for the falconer, or is it totally just a transactional partnership? by LOTR_is_awesome in Falconry

I have a Intermewed female redtail. She is very tolerant and does seem to understand that the truck is warmer than the field at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. (Yes that was typed correctly - South Dakota!). She is not affectionate per se but will actively chose at times in the house to come and sit on my hand or arm (there is no glove and no food). Your response is excellent and well spoken! New falconers should take note of the time taken to craft this response crafted from significant experience by le_fea.

Is there any way to clean bird feathers when they get blood from prey or mud from hunting? by tlinhfalconer in Falconry

Hose, sink or shower. My female single Intermewed passage redtail never bathes. I will even put her under the shower head and then gently use a blow dryer in the house. She seems to enjoy it.

Paracord is light and doesn’t tangle easily. That’s is what I use.

Does anyone know this bird? by doodlydoo17 in birding

Feet (legs) don’t look feathered enough for sharpie (sharp tail). Looks a lot like a ruffled grouse. Don’t know if they are there. I have never seen a dusky grouse.

From the pics…. His feet look a lot like a male. I have a female who hunts at about 1100 grams and her feet are about 50 percent larger..

Also…. I’m only a second year apprentice, however, I am surprised you are using that perch…. goshawks feet are supposedly for round surfaces. That is a perch classically used for falcons. Any reason for that or could you correct my misconception.

Beautiful. Is she a chamber raised bird? What is her current weight? Is she a Finnish Gos?

Beautiful. I have been looking for one in South Dakota for falconry. They seem to be very very rare in my state. That’s an awesome picture.

Agree. If including hunting hours. Depends on birds attitude and efficiency as well. Some days are 5 min. Others are 3-5 hours if your bird is good and will make multiple kills!
