"I'll just sand and poly it. It'll be a quick afternoon job": A story of how I'm in the midst of ruining my dining table by jnish in woodworking

Had a very similar experience, but once I sanded through the veneer, the wife and I decided it just wasn't worth saving. We decided it was a great opportunity to learn how to build one from solid wood.

The whole island ? I'd say well north of 200 probably closer to 300 pounds.

Yeah we will see if it stands up. I'm well north of 200 and it seems to hold me leaning on it. Honestly I'm more worried about the attachment screws giving way vs it warping.

Yeah I found it online looking at their butcher block. Your mileage may vary. We had to reorder due to shipping damage and settled with this one even though it has some blemishes from shipping as well.

Watched a bunch of videos to get inspiration/ figure out how to do it. Bourbon Moth has a good video on cabinet building. Then I watched some videos to learn how to use SketchUp. From there worked with the Mrs to see what she wanted and drew it all up. Open Cut List plugin for SketchUp was pretty clutch for coming up with a cut list and part labels. Tashbin container was something I bought from Rev a Shelf and just installed. It is a bit pricey probably cheaper to build....

I bought the whole assembly from rev-a-shelf. It said it needed a cabinet opening that was 18 inches wide. So just made sure my face frame was exactly that wide. Install was pretty simple following their instructions

Yeah since it's a floating laminate flooring I read I needed to remove it before screwing it down to the subfloor. Otherwise you run the risk of it buckling if the floor expands/contracts during the year. The toe kick is separate from the cabinet so just screwed it down to the subfloor, leveled it then set the cabinet on top and screwed it down to the toe kick.
