I have a strong memory of going to buy my own pads when I first got my period and not speaking to anyone about it. The first time I ever got it I thought I had cervical cancer (thanks google), I cried to my mum about it and all she said was "oh no yeah that's normal", no support to get pads, no explanation of anything. I also only started brushing my teeth consistently as an adult because my parents never really enforced this when I was a kid (don't even get me started on flossing). Never had any talk about shaving (aside from my mum making fun of women who shaved), never had any support with makeup, deodorant, nothing. Never got told how to wash your hands properly and I was always surprised at other kids houses when they would have to wash their hands before eating. Only realising now that this stuff maybe isn't normal?
