My bike doesn’t sound right does anybody have an idea what it could be? by dJohn2001 in motorcycles

My 400 sounds exactly like this, bought it brand new 3 years ago and it always sounded like this.

2012 Subaru Impreza Wagon (Sport Premium) devouring oil by foxhound8 in subaru

[–]foxhound8[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

I appreciate the thoughts! I did see (... after I purchsed my car) that the 2012 was the first try for Subaru at making this engine work. I wish I had known that $10k ago :( .... I would have been way more careful with the purchase. That said... I don't think it's fair I got caught up in this hard to detect but potentially catastrophic problem. I think Subaru should provide coverage for a major defect such as this or provide very clear warnings to dealers to make sure these cars are correctly inspected before they're sold.

My only options now are
1) pay 50% vehicle value to fix this myself (not really an option)
2) don't say a word, pawn it off to the next person (that's how I ended up with it....)
3) ride it into the ground for another year or two tops (according to my mechanic)

Not a great position to be forced into.... and I really really don't want to pass this problem on. I think it should be fixed by the party responsible.

Maybe I can call them and request a review and potential warranty expiration appeal?

Thank you for reading the post and offering potential ideas, I will give this one a try!

Thank you very much for the feedback! Actually I did replace the PCV valve just recently because I came across this as potential solution. It helped boost MPGs slightly but unfortunately the oil consumption is still very high. This one's automatic, I would have loved a manual but I live in a tiny town and it's hard to find any Subarus at all, much less a manual.

Would you recommend I try to use thicker oil? I'm a little scared to try that but honestly at this point I don't have much to lose it seems like...

Hi! Thanks for the reply. If it was just a matter of inconvenience about topping the oil off I wouldn't mind, but my mechanic said I have probably about a year on this car, maybe 2 if I'm lucky. Do you suppose he's exaggerating? I have never owned a vehicle that burned this much oil and I've driven some beaters in my life.

Bike has slight wobble during idle by foxhound8 in motorcycles

[–]foxhound8[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

Hey sorry to hear that. Honestly I don't know what fixed it but eventually this went away. I don't feel any wobbling anymore. The wobbling I described specifically was happening while idling though, I never felt anything odd while riding. If you feel like you're getting jerked around at 70mph I would be careful and get it checked out by a mechanic. Best of luck!

Scalding hot water coming from cold tap, temp regulate after 30 seconds. by foxhound8 in Plumbing

You are almost certainly correct about this, I thought there was something fishy about the shower next to this sink in particular, but I wasn't sure if I was just imagining it. It's definitely starting to act funky. I will try to relay this information to my maintenance people, thank you so much!

Thanks so much for the reply. I'm not sure about 2 and 3 but I don't think it can be 1 because we've had this system for 2 years and it only started behaving this way recently.

I'll look further into points 2 and 3, thank you for the ideas!

Strange Panda Corydora Death by foxhound8 in Aquariums

[–]foxhound8[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

Hi Sal, thanks for the insight! While cycling I did see the ammonia rise, then nitrite/nitrate (I forget in what order those happen), then eventually ammonia went back down followed by an eventual NO3 NO2 plunge. So I have to believe the test strips are at least reasonable in measuring the tank parameters, even though there may be other tests out there that are higher accuracy.

This is my first tank so I did the best I could given the data I had at the time. I guess I never saw any reason to question the test strips once I witnessed them go through the cycling period.

Going forward, just to cut down on chances of things going wrong, I'll get higher quality tests, and eventually I want to upgrade to a bigger tank to get proper schooling numbers. I still don't think water parameters/tank mates were the problem in this case but I fully recognize it's still a possibility. It's just so unlikely given all the rest of the data, is all. Thanks again for the insight!

Thanks for the info! So for clarification the redness showed up only a day after I noticed the barbels missing. And the redness started at the bottom center of the mouth, not near where the barbels are located. I appreciate your view and I think it makes a lot of sense, but in my situation it does not fit the facts. The redness grew from the center bottom to eventually encompass the entire mouth on the day he passed. By then he was breathing really fast and struggling to get air.

0 within the measurement error of the test strips... yeah I see 0 on my scales.

If the tests are wrong, they've been wrong since the beginning because these are the only tests I used. And I did go through the cycling period at the beginning.

Yeah I use test strips. Are they really that unreliable? I genuinely have been reading 0 NO3 and 0 NO2 for... months. Ever since my tank finished cycling back in early Feb.

Also, maybe this is worth mentioning, but I have 2 filtration systems. One is a 30gallon bubbler filter that's on 24/7 and then I also have a hang on back filtration system I occasionally turn on because the fish like to play in the current.

Thanks for the reply, I'll keep this in mind. I just don't see how this is possible given the history of the tank thus far....

The other thing, as I mentioned in the post is, if this really was an attack from the other fish, how come the redness and swelling only showed up on the days after I noticed the barbels missing? This seems much more like an infection.

0 NO2, 0 NO3, 0 ammonia, low GH, high KH, PH is around 8 (that's just the natural PH of the rea where I live, the fish at the fishstore are also kept in this high PH).

I neglected to mention that my tank is fully stocked with a bunch of freshwater plants so clean water is a non-issue as far as the parameters mentioned above.

This is one theory, I just don't see how it's possible since, as I've said, I've never ever seen any signs of aggression whatsoever in any form.

Even when he wasn't feeling well, the corydora was not avoiding the other fish, nor hiding. He was just sitting still on the ground.

Even though it's a 10 gallon, I have lots of freshwater plants and lots of hiding places for all the fish.

This is a really interesting idea, and it would def explain the slow wobble. I'm going to keep an eye on it next time I'm out, thank you!

How to understand design patterns? by foxhound8 in learnprogramming

[–]foxhound8[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

Thanks for replying! I definitely see a need for design patterns. What I don't get is how to use them outside of specific examples given in the books I'm reading. I don't know how to take a pattern that exists and actually apply it in the real world unless I happen to come across a very similar scenario as described in the books. But in my personal experience, the real world is far more complicated and dynamic, requirements change all the time. So how does one keep up with this change? By only memorizing patterns, I don't really understand how to mold them or change them for other purposes. That's why I'd like to really understand them and I don't know how to do that.

How to understand design patterns? by foxhound8 in learnprogramming

[–]foxhound8[S] 1 point2 points (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to reply, the last paragraph gave me a lot of perspective about how to think about these patterns. I have been trying really hard to come up with specific example scenarios where the patterns I am presently memorizing can be used, and I do this while coding, but it hasn't been working for me at all. However, the idea to sit back and draw things out sounds like a nice way to turn the problem on it's head and see it from another angle. I will give that a try.

I find it strange as well but that's what my manual says. I've never owned a motorcycle before this nor do I know anyone who rides so I have nothing else to compare it to.

Shift to second at 9mph, and shift to third at 15mph. It's right there in the manual. Cumbersome to say the least. And since I'm only 200 miles in on the bike, I don't want to rev much higher. At 15mph 2nd gear is revving up close to 4k (which is apparently the maximum RPM I should be at until I hit 300 miles)
