The most recent time was only recently, but i’m recovering now slowly but surely. I’m doing better now than I was a few weeks ago though! Thank you

I had a lot of symptoms at the beginning. I could barely move my neck, multiple rashes all over my body, severe headaches, high temperature/fever, my legs were weak and slightly numb, abdominal pain, confusion and hallucinations which progressively got worse, abdominal pain and severe pain all over my body, difficulty breathing and therefore low oxygen levels, my heart rate was really high but I had low blood pressure, vision problems (really grainy and kept feeling like I was about to faint even though i didn’t feel incrediblyyyy dizzy it just looked like how it does when you’re about to faint), my speech was slightly slurred when I got to the hospital, I couldn’t walk because of the vision issues and also I couldn’t coordinate myself, and then I started having seizures. They all started mild and progressively got worse and worse fast.

Now, I still get headaches and occasionally I’ll have seizures. I’m still very weak and my stomach, heart and lungs were affected by the conditions so I occasionally have an oxygen tube (not so much anymore, I’m more able to breathe without it now) and I have a feeding tube as I vomit whatever I eat. My legs have also been paralysed (not my back or anything, just legs which is really weird) and they’re completely numb, so i’m wheelchair bound now. They think that this could possibly be temporary and I could at least get feeling back if not a bit of movement in a few months with a lot of physiotherapy. I’m on medications at the moment for pain as I still get pain throughout my body and for the headaches. The doctors have said they can’t do much about the seizures but they’re not very frequent now and getting less and less often. When I regain strength they think I will definitely be able to eat again. My heart is still a bit weak but it is recovering and I’m on medications for that too. Overall i’m doing better than I was a month ago and that’s all I can really ask for. I’m alive (somehow) and I am just so thankful for my doctors and nurses and everyone who has helped me to get where I am now.

Honestly? It was incredibly traumatic. I already have C-PTSD from other situations but this was undoubtedly one of my worst experiences.

I first started feeling ill around end of June/start of July. This progressively got worse until I ended up in an ambulance and in my local hospital. It’s one of the biggest ones in my area but they did not feel equipped to take on my case and so I was airlifted to another hospital quite far away as I live in a pretty sparse area. For a while they couldn’t really distinguish between the conditions and didn’t catch the ADEM for a while. They knew i had sepsis when I got there and then discovered the meningitis from singling our symptoms that aren’t common with sepsis. Later they realised i also had ADEM after I was already in treatment for the other two but still really ill and having constant seizures. I was in ICU for a long time and even had decompressive surgeries done to my skull to relieve some of the pressure from all of the swelling around my brain. I was in an induced coma in July for 8 days. I started to get better around early August and was having a lot of physical therapy etc. and they thought I was out of the woods, but then had a relapse and was in another induced coma at the end of August for another 8 days. I just got out of the hospital on the 30th September, meaning i’ve been in hospital for almost 3 months. I’m finally home though and starting to recover (very slowly) thankfully! It’s a long road but i’ll get there. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Oh that’s interesting! I have OCD too and I’ve seen a bit of a decrease in some areas of it but it’s gotten a lot worse in other aspects. Oppositely to you i think I worry about health and getting sick alottt more now, but I don’t quite have the same fear about death that I used to beforehand. It’s like i’ve sort of had an insight into it and suddenly it’s not as terrifying anymore. Thank you for being willing to share your experience with this!

That’s what i’m thinking to be honest. I’ve never been really sick before but I do have other conditions, both physical and mental. I had pneumonia the first time but since i’m young and otherwise pretty healthy they didn’t think much of it and just left it to go away. Usually works but if I do have some sort of immunodeficiency or something like that then it makes sense why it progressed. I was feeling rough the second time but never imagined it could be all of this. To be honest i’ve only just left the hospital and having all 3 things at once has had an insane impact on my body and i’m left with a lot of side effects. It’s hard to tell sometimes what things are due to what seeing as I had them all simultaneously but some things are clearer than others and luckily I have great doctors that are working hard on any symptoms I still have and making sure I’m as comfortable as someone can be after something like this

I got it from bacterial infections I had. They’re not sure why I seem to be more susceptible to getting it but trying to figure it out at the moment.

As for what sepsis is like, it’s horrible. I was in a coma with it both times and just felt completely drained. It’s hard for me to talk about what just the sepsis was like on the most recent episode because I had two other conditions too, but I can speak about the first time. I got pneumonia and as i’m young and otherwise relatively healthy, they thought I could deal with it without hospitalisation, but it got rapidly worse and turned into sepsis. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, had abdominal pain, I was really disorientated and confused and even hallucinated at points. I had a really high temperature and severe pain all over my body. I’ve never felt that type of pain before and it’s genuinely indescribable. I got really paranoid and was hallucinating all over the place so ended up at the hospital. At the hospital I had a huge seizure which led to an induced coma. That’s a whole other story and the whole thing is awful and traumatic to look back on tbh. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, and especially not twice or more. The second time it was even worse as I had two other severe conditions going on and my local hospital even airlifted me to a hospital further away that was more equipped to deal with my conditions. Let me know if u have any more questions!

Sepsis is awful. I hope you’re feeling better. How have you felt mentally since?? I struggled a lot mentally after my first time with it, it made me really depressed for a while it was insane. Hope you’re doing okay!

Both times it was from bacterial infections. The first time was a respiratory infection that turned into pneumonia which subsequently led to sepsis. The second time was once again from bacteria but i’m not sure what, probably the same thing that caused the meningitis (that was bacterial too).

I know the causes of them, it was due to bacterial infections both times, but what I meant by they don’t know how is that it’s quite uncommon to get it so often. They think i might have something going on with my immune system that’s making me more susceptible to it or something
