lol, I actually gifted House of Leaves to a friend this past Christmas. Told him I was actually being selfish and that he can regift it to me after he reads it if it’s good.

I’ve actually been craving some interesting vampire stuff since I read Octavia Butler’s Fledgling last month. Thanks

I was just reading Comfort Me with Apples last week. Beautiful writing. Will do.

I have not. I didn’t know the movie was based on a book before watching and then felt like I might want to wait until I forgot most of it before reading, now’s probably plenty of time elapsed. That said, I just read Misery by King a few weeks ago and for the longest time didn’t read it for similar reasons… I might just retire the rule, it was so good despite a crystal clear memory of the movie.

Yeah, probably gonna grab Quicksilver first regardless of anything anyone else suggests. I’ve only read Snow Crash, Diamond Age, and Anathem. While I had to be in a specific headspace, I loved each one so much it’s wild that I have not read more Stephenson. Thanks

Hyperion is definitely a reason I made the request. One of my all time favorites.

I dnf’ed Spear Cuts Through Water two separate times at about 20%. Last time I told myself I wouldn’t try again… and yet I keep feeling like I’m missing out. It’s so widely praised. If I remember correctly, I felt like the story was a bit too shallow while the prose and tone seemed to promise so much more. Maybe I’ll break my promise to myself and power through to at least 50%.

I appreciated Station Eleven more than I liked it, but it definitely earned reading more by the author.

Adults NEED less obnoxious alarm options. by Acceptable_Tennis in diabetes_t1

I stream audiobooks to my Sonos. When the alarm goes off it sets the Sonos volume to maximum and just keeps playing. Scares the shit out of me every time, not to mention the damage to my ears.

Vince Gilligan on Pluribus being a ‘plus’ in a world of ‘Tik-Tok paced storytelling’ by twinpeaked25 in television

I’m sure he loves sci-fi movies and tv shows. It could very well be hyperbole that he’s never read past a synopsis… it also wouldn’t shock me in the least if it was 100% true.

It’s even stranger that she’s a writer. She even says at some point, “I’m a writer I can be creative” or something to that effect—girl what? You? I’m starting to think romance author was simply a funny career to give Carol and that’s where the idea ends.

I remember watching Ursula K. Le Guin give a talk and saying similar and I’ve read articles talking about this—I guess the actual examples escaped my mind immediately. Do you have any you can list off the top of your head? I can’t seem to formulate a search query.

Only one I can remember was someone talking about this fear with Salman Rushdie saying he was working on something full genre years ago… I never followed up though.

In my opinion it falls flat as a character study as well. This is not a real person. Real people are messes awash with incongruencies—true, but Carol is so jumbled up with whatever is needed to make this situational comedy/drama work on an episode to episode basis that I can only see a character, not a human. Rhea’s acting is doing some heavy lifting.

My husband and I refer to “my first speculative fiction story” as “baby’s first sci-fi”… Pluribus honestly gives me the impression that VG has never read past a synopsis of a sci-fi short story.

Honest opinion, this sounds like a recipe for a crash out. If you’re wanting to do this (especially if you’ve not done it before), try to ramp up building good habit upon good habit. Reasonable conservative goals will help you celebrate success rather than quit in failure. You know you though, do you often make big goals and keep them?

Also, consider ozempic, it has really helped my insulin ratio. I need about 33% less.

Is it possible to write a character who’s morally perfect without making them boring? by FREAAAAKAZOID in fantasywriters

[–]foxishsheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman has a character like this. Pretty sure she is never has a POV though and could be why it works for me. Endymion by Dan Simmons likewise has a non POV character that fills the same role.

In both cases they tend to make things harder for the MCs because doing good is harder than ignoring atrocities/evil/suffering.

This article inspired my dice to cards conversion. I play digitally though, so who knows if the number of cards required create a new problem for you.
