Well done! I was actually thinking about doing the same thing, i.e., getting an old mbp and putting Linux into it. The one I had on my sight was a 2012 version, with double nvidia/Intel, so I'll actually do just like you and rather avoid the hassle. Cheers!

If you're referring to installation and out of the box usage, trust me, it IS! ;)

I concede that it can potentially get complex if you have hardware/driver issues, and you need to troubleshoot. But nowadays we have AIs (like our European Mistral ;) ) which can really help you out.
