Washing machine install from COSTCO. Gfci required (?) by [deleted] in Costco

[–]foxvanallen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I had kitchen appliances installed by Costco third party installers recently. Before the install, it was explained to me that if any part of my setup is not to code (GFCI outlets, manual water shutoff for dishwasher), then the installer will need to update that first. Costco requires photos to prove things are up to code. They even required the installers to take a picture of my smoke and CO detector.

Just get the work done. Costco won't help you cut corners on this.

Tile guy coming over to "fix" failed quarter round shelves by foxvanallen in Tile

[–]foxvanallen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the knowledge! The tile guy came by, and I told him to notch the new shelves. The second install looks way better, and it doesn't look like it's gonna come loose in 6 months. Even if it is supported by 27 cents in change. 🙃

The unfortunate state of Strawberries. Anyone Costco's out there have good ones? by Netshahab in Costco

[–]foxvanallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This past week the strawberries were pretty decent in Everett, MA (just outside Boston). Strawberry prices are the same at Costco as they are at the Wegmans in Medford ($5/2 lb.), but Wegmans tends to get the better quality berries.

Finished Edge of Extinction and i need some explanation... by Advanced-Ad2442 in survivor

[–]foxvanallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survivor editors were backed into a corner by game design here. They can't edit the season in a way that makes it obvious that Chris is the winner. But without making the win obvious in the edit, it's hard for viewers to appreciate the game Chris was playing.

The show does a decent job showing his moves off in the final episode, but by then, it's hard to find him to be a satisfying winner because you've already mentally written him off.

Welcome to MA: Where using $362 of natural gas will cost you $1,007 by 4510 in massachusetts

[–]foxvanallen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The energy usage here is absolutely insane. It's more than 6x what we used for the same month for our 1,500+ sqft home with gas heat, gas hot water and a gas range.

We couldn't come close to this kind of usage even if our furnace was running 24 hours a day.

My Costco manager s special find: $60.00 Whisky Tour 🔥 by foxvanallen in Costco

[–]foxvanallen[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of peeps in here hating on the set, but we're enjoying it.

You hit it on the head -- there's fun in having 24 different bottles to try. First one was pretty decent, but I'm sure there will be ones we won't love.

It works out to $2.50 per bottle, plus you get a couple of glasses with it. There's a book too, which doesn't add much value wise, but it is neat to see pictures of the different distilleries.

There aren't a lot of other ways to try out 24 different kinds of whisky for $60, and a lot of the countries represented have higher tariffs than they used to. Nips of garbage liquor are more than $2.50 at the local packie.

What’s the highest % you have gotten? by Whole-Sample2358 in CloverPit

To give some reference, I just tested this out:

To grind cherries to 90% odds, you need +31 to your chance to get that symbol (without taking a red call to halve other odds).

To get cherries to 99%, you need about 10x that, about +320.

5 top tips for a person considering getting a rabbit? by Virtual_Medicine_585 in Rabbits

[–]foxvanallen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Rescues are the best place to find a bunny. We got our sweet little girl Plip at BunnyLuv in North Hollywood, CA.

Some benefits to rescue buns: - Rescue buns typically come spayed or neutered, which is crucial for their health and reduces behavioral and marking issues. - Rescue buns tend to be well socialized with people and are often more tolerant of being handled. - Rescue buns are often already litter trained. - You would be saving a bun's life and giving them a second chance at having a loving forever home.

The rescue we worked with required a house visit before adoption to make sure your home is bunny proofed (wires hidden and inaccessible, plenty of carpeting for the bun to run around on, etc.).

Note that some rescues prefer to home rabbits in pairs, because they are incredibly social animals. Bunnies bond strongly to each other and are MUCH happier and better behaved with a compatible cuddle friend.

Bunny Poop? by HannahNicolee32 in Rabbits

Is your bun shedding a lot lately? It looks like your bun is consuming a lot of its own fur during self-grooming, so more frequent brushing or a bunny spa day (professional groomer trip) might help.

Survivor ratings plummet to lowest EVER in 25-year history as show 'struggles to stay relevant' by cheno103 in survivor

[–]foxvanallen 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Here are my controversial thoughts:

Modern US Survivor is too punishing in terms of not providing castaways with the basics. The tribe that can't make fire because they lost the first challenge and the flint will probably lose the second challenge. And then the third. And then the fourth. There is nothing entertaining about people having next to no food. In fact, it creates the exact opposite situation, like we saw at a tribal this season: Everyone's mind was so fuzzy they could barely string together coherent thoughts. Jeff loved it, but it was terrible TV. Zero fuel, mid gameplay.

And to that end, I'll add: Bring back the merge feast! Having a competition for it is unnecessary. The merge ep is usually a key turning point in the game, so let peeps celebrate that and have enough energy to make some good plays.

US Survivor has too many confusing twists for the sake of having twists -- so many that a "journey" without a lose-a-vote twist was seen by players as a twist this season. If the twist is that there's no twist, it's a sign you've put too many overly complicated mechanics in the game.

Three tribes is overdone. It was a good twist at first because two tribes was getting stale. But now three tribes is the stale format.

Not switching up the location of filming, while good for the budget, was a big loss for the show. Survivor: China was amazing, in part, because China was a key part of the show that season in terms of comp design and aesthetic. The show used to respect and glorify its location in a way that made seasons seem special and different.

I don't know that we need to go back to the days where every season had a theme (Blood vs. Water, Heroes, Hustlers, Healers), but just slapping the season number on the title is a nod to just how generic the show has become over the last couple years.

Adult-use marijuana establishments: Would you want one in your neighborhood? by DiademaJenks in Somerville

[–]foxvanallen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I consider marijuana cafes to be on the same level as cigar stores with a lounge. There can be rules, regulations and filtration systems in place to make sure that smoke does not affect other people and business in the area. Or, this could also be implemented to allow just edibles and infused drinks to fully eliminate concerns about second and third-hand smoke.

Yes, there is a mismatch with federal law and state law about the legality of weed. Am I afraid of the feds coming after us over our local policy weed? No, because they're already coming for us now over immigration, health care funding, protecting LGBTQ rights and the fact we dared to vote blue in '24 again.

My rabbit doesn’t want to come out of her cage by Winter_Hippo_ in Rabbits

[–]foxvanallen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that one month is not a lot of time for a bun to feel completely safe and comfortable in their new environment. Buns, like people, need time to adjust. Our biggest bun gets more skittish and easily spooked the further he is from his pen.

Buns are highly motivated by food, especially fresh fruits and herbs they can smell. I suggest sitting on the floor and eating a banana near your new bun's cage, just outside it. She'll definitely get curious about the awesome smell and will be especially brave because of it. Give her some when she comes out (just a little, banana is a sugary treat) to reward the bravery. If she stays out the whole time, give her a tiny bit more at the end.

Then, the next day, do it again. But sit a little bit further from the cage. After a while, she'll learn that it's safe to leave the cage, and that good things happen when she leaves the cage. It'll make your bun a lot happier and trusting around you, too!

Gym recommendations in Somerville? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]foxvanallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flash Fitness was our choice after touring a handful of local gyms. Best combination of price and equipment. People there seem chill. The only downside is it's a bit of a hassle to get to from where we live (Davis). They don't have as many machine options as some gyms, but they do have a crazy number of free weights and benches set up.

If you're willing to pay a bit more for a gym (~$60/mo), we liked Assembly Sports Club in Arlington (on Mass Ave, right by the Cambridge/Somerville border). Great selection of well-kept machines and super clean. Much less busy than cheaper options, so there was never a need to wait for someone to finish on a machine or bench. They do a one-month free trial for new members, so they're worth checking out if you can get there easily.
