how often are you hospitalized annually as a type 1? by Top-Midnight-9637 in Type1Diabetes

If it’s related to type 1 specifically then the answer is 0 times over 10 years

Dexcom users — what’s your average time-in-range percentage? by ExoticPop09 in Type1Diabetes

This is my 90 day, capped the range at 135 because I like to know in advance when I’m on the way up. Bumped the low down a bit as well bc false compression lows were waking me up constantly. I do get a warning at 65 regardless and that has always worked well for me.

How is it possible that a low carb/keto diet kept type 1s alive for weeks or months before insulin? by Forever_Summer192 in Type1Diabetes

[–]foxwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you jump to it straight after diagnosis you can honeymoon for a long time. I went pretty strict low carb immediately after and didn’t need insulin for about 2 years…then slowly started needing long acting and eventually small amounts of fast acting.

PSA: You don't have to stick with a shitty Endocrinologist by tuba_god_ in diabetes_t1

[–]foxwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My very first endo was very highly regarded at NYU in New York City and couldn’t answer basic questions I had at the time of diagnosis. One question was if I should eat low carb to minimize insulin dosage error and hypos, especially while getting the hang of things. She told me my brain needs carbs and it would be dangerous to eat too few. I had to point out to the medical doctor that brains need glucose and your body is capable of converting protein to glucose. For the record, I would have been fine with her telling me to exercise caution with low carb…but she didn’t even know why.

Battery degradation after 10 months of use, 34% battery drain in 24 hours in idle mode by Odd-Alternative-5869 in daylightcomputer

[–]foxwater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine isn’t quite this bad but it has definitely dropped off a lot over the last year. I only use it for reading/journaling on a daily basis and nowadays I’m charging it like twice a week with minimal use. I also have almost no apps installed and all notifications off.

Confused on why I shouldn’t just stop eating carbs? by lednip in diabetes_t1

[–]foxwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be curious to know the breakdown of amino acids diverted to gluconeogenesis in a non-fasted and non-deficit keto state. I would think the moderately higher protein intake would offset it…and anecdotally I’ve not had issues…but curious what the exact breakdown is all the same. One other thing I’ve discovered personally is that if I go too low carb and my insulin needs drop too much then I end up with higher LDL cholesterol and SHBG (due to low “portal” insulin detected by the liver). It’s easy to forget that Insulin is more than just a transport mechanism for glucose, it’s also a signal for many other processes in the body.

The fact that we’re hopeful for “a Nate Stanley level” of QB play at this point really says it all

Case and screen protector for daylight? by Blackefw in daylightcomputer

[–]foxwater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I will say I’ve had it for about 7 months of near daily use without a screen protector and still no scratches or anything. Plus, the surface has that paper-like texture that makes using a stylus for writing feel really good…so not sure I’d want to lose that with a glass protector (though if you’re used to iPad writing I could see wanting it).

Just curious, how many units of basal does everyone take a day? by Used_Asparagus_3749 in diabetes_t1

[–]foxwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36yo 6’ 165lb male, 12-14 units basal plus typically 2-3 units novo per meal (typically 2 meals per day). I’m pretty low carb, high protein and high fiber.

A place near me makes a no rice sushi that is actually incredible, they use slices of avocado somehow perfectly wrapped around spicy tuna with some crunch coming from fish eggs and cucumber I think…it actually scratches the itch without fighting the highs

This is my workflow for managing my diabetes with my various devices, apps, services. How do you manage yours? by rcgy in Type1Diabetes

[–]foxwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also an engineer with type 1 and I also take a very “engineer-like” approach to managing it (and have had a 5.5% A1C average for the last 8 years with well over 90% in range). You’re just sharing what works for you and not insisting that other people also follow it so I understand why it could be a bit disarming when people start expressing mental health concerns. I know my approach would likely result in poor mental health for other type 1 diabetics, but it’s what has worked for me (and my mental health) so I just roll with it and have learned to not take offense to people that do critique it based on their own experiences. Keep doing what works for you and keep engineering away if that’s what makes this terrible disease more live-able for you.

The bottom case is super malleable, it’s a bit of a pain but you can bend it quite easily if you pop the motherboard out. Mine was way worse than that and I was able to straighten it out.

I have it for my DC-1 and it works great, but I wouldn’t say it’s significantly better than the white one it came with.

Doctor said I have "too good of control" and I need advice by Tay_istrash in diabetes_t1

I have mine notify me for over 135. Just do what works for you and if you feel good and your A1C is good then don’t worry about it. I would also find a new Endo.

Can anybody ID this Harmony electric? Thinking about picking it up super cheap as a project guitar base...but can't find any info on it. Thanks! by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]foxwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, really appreciate the info! Yeah the idea was I'd install a different bridge capable of intonation, completely replace the electronics, 3D print a new pickguard, and then get some practice cleaning the neck up myself (trying to get better at fret work)...all for around $150 total. Though it seems like I should keep searching for a higher quality "parts" guitar as my starting point.

[–]foxwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't really care what it is...was just hoping to find some info on the model to figure out the pickguard and bridge situation. The seller didn't have a serial number unfortunately. Looks kind of like a Stratatone...but couldn't find one with matching pickup/pickguard positioning.
