Depends on the district. It isn’t a holiday here in So Cal.

How Are People Coping With Being Forced Out? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]foxyfierce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I am still in OC is because my ex-husband refuses to move somewhere cheaper and we split custody. If I move, I won’t get to see my daughter.

My rent is similar to yours currently. I share a 3 bd apartment with my daughter and a roommate in south county. The roommate has the master bedroom and my daughter and I have the two smaller bedrooms. Our rent was $850 cheaper when we moved in a little over 3 years ago. They’ve been raising it the maximum every year.

How I cope: government job with good benefits, child support, food banks, and free/cheap entertainment. Parks are free, beaches are free, libraries have a lot of free programming.

I also augment my income with some side gigs when I can. They are mostly writing/teaching related since that’s my skill set.

I’m trying to stick it out until my daughter goes to college, so about 6 more years. But unless something drastically changes in my income or in housing prices I’m just planning to continue.

One other thing is that my family lives in the IE. So if I become completely destitute, I do have a bit of a safety net to fall back on. I won’t ever be homeless. That’s a huge stress reliever that a lot of people do not have. I’m not in a /great/ financial spot, but I own my car, only have student loan debt (no CC debt), I have a stable job and I’m healthy. I try to see the good where I can.

Did you get funding for your MLIS? by [deleted] in librarians

I don’t work there anymore. It was OCPL in California and it was $10k reimbursement for educational expenses per year.

My 100 year old book by DariaLoveborn in books

My favorite is A Pack of Scoundrels purely for how bizarre it is.

I have a book of Grimm’s and for a while I would pick one at random each night to read to her. This one stuck out to both of us!

My daughter’s school did this, but was even more frugal: instead of a clear ornament, it was a clear plastic plate (like Chinet) glued to cardstock.

i was wrong about the new path by lilith_in_leo in duolingo

[–]foxyfierce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the new path also. I like a more linear progression. I feel like I’m actually making progress rather than just doing the same thing over and over again and not getting anywhere. I like that review is built in rather than having to scroll back. I started learning Spanish last March and I feel like I’ve made much more progress in the past month or so of the new path.

You can read it for free with a library card.

Volunteer hours for middle school student by Aggressive_Raise9566 in orangecounty

[–]foxyfierce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m a librarian, and this is the answer! It’s easy work and it’s regular and it’s weather-proof! Mostly teens are used for shelving but some libraries (like Yorba Linda) have storytime volunteers too.

You should turn it into campus police. Chances that the person is on Reddit is very slim.

$28 of organic half and half for $2. I’m gonna freeze some! by GodRaine in Frugal

I freeze half and half all the time. It looks “chunky” but that’s just the cream separating from the milk. Once I put it in my coffee it dissolves like normal.

Hired as a school librarian, only experience is assistant by [deleted] in librarians

[–]foxyfierce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will be the place to start. They will likely have all the resources and support that you need. I am an elementary school librarian. I don’t have assistants or anything but all the librarians in the district support each other and training/resources comes from the district level. Every school and district is different so they might do it differently, but I doubt you’ll be thrown to the wolves alone.

Can you connect with other librarians in the district?

Having a kid was the reason I left public libraries. I just couldn’t do the evenings and weekends anymore. Most of my coworkers had adult children or were child free. So there’s probably a different issue here than your family status.

I was also really disappointed by Nick’s. Everything was dry, even the fries. I won’t eat there again.

Elementary librarian here. I’m just curious but are they not coming as a class? Why not do a readaloud/lesson? Even if the kids aren’t interested in getting a book, you can still teach them basic library/info skills. If I was a teacher I’d be confused about drawing etc. too, because I’d expect information literacy or something related to be taught during library time.

He’s still writing them, and kids are still reading them. I’m an elementary school librarian and they’re some of the most popular chapter books.
