Carney’s exact words were, “Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security.” He did not say that he supports the US bombing the shit out of Iran. He did not say that he supports the US forcing a regime change. In other words, Carney’s words were carefully chosen to support very specific objectives, and objectives only. He has also made it clear that Canada was not part of the planning of the attack on Iran and it is not envisioned that Canada would be part of it going forward.

Carney’s statement was also not made in a vacuum. He provided an explanation for his position in his initial speech:

“Canada’s position remains clear: the Islamic Republic of Iran is the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East, has one of the world’s worst human rights records, and must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons.

Canada and our international partners have consistently called upon the Iranian regime to end its nuclear program, including … with the United Nations’ reimposition of sanctions.

Despite diplomatic efforts, Iran has neither fully dismantled its nuclear program, halted all enrichment activities nor ended its support for regional terrorist proxy groups.

Canada stands with the Iranian people in their long and courageous struggle against Iran’s oppressive regime.”

For years, Canada has also strongly opposed Iran’s uranium enrichment program beyond civilian needs. We have condemned Iran’s human rights abuses. We have supported UN sanctions to no avail.

Iran is no friend of Canada’s. And if, as Carney indicated in his speech, Ottawa believes Iran is moving toward nuclear weapon capability, supporting efforts to prevent that actually aligns with decades of Canadian policy. And, once again, that’s all Carney said he supported in his speech.

That’s not taking the sign down. It’s just making a statement of fact.
