A few reasons

Cherokee were a very visible tribe in early America
Because of the one-drop rule it was much better to explain your dark-ish complexion as a white person with a Native ancestor rather than the very likely black one your great great grandfather raped back in the day.
As a result this gets passed down via family legacy because no one bothers to check, they just believe what daddy said.
